The 96 has less power than the older ones, because its OBDII and they dropped the tune to be more economical. Also, the intake manifold is slightly different curvature.
These videos are great. I just bought a 96 Toyota Corolla and little by little want to rebuild it.
Everybody knows that a yellow engine block will make more power than other colors. Well, almost everyone. Good choice, and nice work, looks and sounds good!

Thanks for this video. I've searched a lot on the internet to find a video with a complete view of the 4AFE engine. I was specifically looking for a video explaining where all the parts are like alternator, starter, fuel/oil pumps, oil filter and how they are connected to the main 4AFE engine.
Rebuilding my engine soon wish me luck! Parts are cheap but to pay for install way more money. I would do it myself but I don't have a garage. Oh well better then financing.

How was your 5a rebuild?
I don't think it was ever rebuilt, we bought the car in 2007, just before that the guy we bought it from put in that 5a motor, he bought the motor from a used parts dealer, those parts came from Japan, it has since served its time.

@clint I had a 1997 7afe and it we swapped it to a 1994 7afe from a wagon into my celica, the only explanation I can get is you may have a Canada built 7afe they made 15more hps then the American 1s and only offered for 3 years 1992-95, also the wagons had forged internals that's why they had slightly more power cuz from 20mph-50mph its as fast as a corvette it flies...

TargaWheels That oil leak around the front of the engine is often the o-ring on the distributor. i did a video on that too ;) good luck.
I guess I meant on the rear of the engine? I thought it was the crank seal behind the crank timing sprocket. But when I looked behind all the plastic covers, it was coming down from what looked like the valve cover gasket. Cleaned and sealed it back up, still leaking. Funny it doesn't leak when idling, but if I take it for a short drive, then oil comes out.
TargaWheels The new valve cover gasket will not seal by itself, you must put gasket sealer in all of the areas where the gasket has to go over the exaust cam shaft. those sharp chages in direction will leak if gasket sealer is not added. also make sure your washers on the top 4 corners of your valve cover are still rubbery enough to apply constant pressure to the vslve cover over the full operation heat range.
Just to improvise.
* never tap bearings with anything. Fingers only.
*at least plastigauge to confirm bearing clearances
*always set your ring gaps before installing piston. Always.
*when tapping piston into block be aware of the rod not scuffing the crank journal
* 7afe rod bolts are as thin as toothpicks. Rather put new for peace of mind.
If you wanted it blue and your wife wanted it yellow you better start searching for her favorite shade of yellow😂

my 7afe isn't in the best shape, but it feels so good in terms of power and for a four banger. my other 4 cylinders feel weak in comparison. the Miata, and VW golf. the 94 Nissan Altima was the only exception.

They redesigned the intake manifold on the 1996+ 7afe's for economy so they have anywhere from 5 to 10 horsepower less than the older ones
I've always used the same intake manifold. The other configuration does not have the same vacuum connections and will not work for smog in California...

How hard was this job? I want to do something similar to my rolla, I have a 91.. Did you do any type of mods?
I did not do mods. I guess the difficulty level is going to depend on your skill level and what tools you have. It is a fairly advanced project and if you've never done it before it could be more that you should start out with.
If you have a friend that has experience that could help you, I think that would be best.

If you buy new pistons and rods does it matter what cylinder that they go into? Or are these pistons numbered because the machine shop machines the block to each specific piston?
It does not matter which piston goes into which cylinder. The pistons should be the same weight before they are installed. Material should be removed from the heaviest pistons until they all weight the same as the lightest one.

Yes, I still have that radiator and it is working well. It is a Mushimoto.
You should rotate each plug wire 90 degrees to the left so that they are near the intake, and not the exhaust..

Do you have any tips or tricks on installing a 7AFE into a 97 Corolla? It is kicking my butt right now getting it back in and trying to mate it up to the trans.
What's the difference between the 1.6 and 1.8 and how interchangeable are they? I'm looking at replacing a 1.6 (spun bearings) with a 1.8
The main differences are the size of the pistons and the height of the cylinder head and the and, consequently the size of the top, plastic front engine cover.
Where did you get the rebuild kit? Only place I've seen is eBay so you'll understand why I'm hesitant to get one of those kits
Yes, I got just about everything off ebay except the block and the cylinder head.

any idea if a 4afe turbo manifold would fit a 7afe, can never seem to get a straight answer, you would think they would be the same.
Sorry, I have no idea. If you get a schematic of the heads, you can compare the dimensions.
At the beginning of the video you say your engine block cracked. I wrongly assumed a piston rod came off the crankshaft and had cracked the block. Can you explain what caused the block to crack?
It turned out the block wasn't cracked after all ...

@@Engineerboy100 Mine was totaled by a gravel travel at 350,000 miles. I didn't know anyone had to rebuild these, I thought they lasted forever
Great job! What plug wires are they? I have a 93 corolla. Bought two sets so far but still don't fit right. (Spongie at the distributor and causing misfire/stalling) pretty sure thats my problem. replaced distributor and bought a set of fat wires. (very spongie fit) hardly ran. Bought new set.(less loose/ spongie) runs better but stalls occasionally.

No sure which wires they are but I would recommend OEM. The yellow wires I have in the video are spongy too, not the best, they work ok but I don't really like them either. I got them at a recycle yard because I thought they looked cool ... but OEM is better.

I don't know about E100 but 7afe and 4afe are the same. I've had both in this car.
Nice yellow color. I picked up a 95 Corolla with a 4afe 1.6. not happy with power. Maybe I should up grade to a 7afe 1.8. does anyone know if the heads are the same and block design the same. Reason I ask is because I will be piecing out my parts little but little
7afe and 4afe have the same head pattern smaller block. different plastic front engine covers due to shorter 4afe but both will work on 1.8 or 1.6 blocks.

CAMshafts off of a 4AFE should work on a 7AFE head.

Clint can the 7afe be carbied? I am doing a 4ac rebuild and was thinking about using this big torque 1.8 instead of a 4age.. yet would like to carby it as I have no idea how to wire in this engine in to an ae82.. thanks so much awesome work!
I can be done but it would require un-ported heads and a lot of other little adjustments. I would not recommend it as it's the kind of job that if you have to ask, generally it's probably biting off more than you can chew. That said, the short direct answer to your question is yes it can be done but I would not want to do it.

Hey Clint do you know the difference between the jdm 7afe equipped with the distributor and the US 7afe, I think I'm coming to the conclusion that it would be easier to get a low mile jdm instead rebuilding mine or going to a local junkyard, but I'm trying to see if it's a direct fit.

If you use a used engine block and do the work yourself your can get a rebuild cylinder head for about $300.00 and replacement pistons and rings for about $80 to $100 the rest is just grease gaskets and paint or whatever you want to do to make it look nice. good luck, be safe and have fun!

Hey clint, i've watched plenty of your vids and have built a fully forged bottom end with a rebuilf factory head for a turbo application amd was just wondering if the crank bolts could be re-used for performance applications (270fwhp)

how do we differentiate between the older and newer model engine. e.g in this case like you mentioned 1994 and 1996.
Well it's not as simple as just the years, but here are 3 ways. 1. call the dealer and give them the VIN of your car to get exact specs. 2. look at the diagrams on the underside of the hood for engine specifics. 3. Be versed on regulations such as OBDI and OBDII requirements. 1994 is OBDI and 1996 is OBDII which means 96' has an OBDII port and 94' does not. There are also at least 3 different intake manifold and EGR configurations. Also note whether your engine is a 1.6 4afe or a 1.8 7afe....
Sound like a diesel "clicking"need valve clearance or adjusting shim.
Yes, it needs one of the shims changed.

Hey clint. i know Its kind of weird that i still own a 7A-FE engine in 2017. Am not a techie and need to detail clean the engine. What should i cover to avoid contact with water. Thanks in advance.
Cover your alternator, distributor and all of your wiring harness electrical connectors like to your fuel injectors, your egr switch on the firewall and a/c switch. Try to avoid directly spraying water on the starter too and ideally use steam. That's my 2 cents, clean at your own risk. another option would be to get a squirt bottle and roll of paper towels and take your time spraying and wiping, ... safer. ;)

On the 7afe, I need to change the front crankshaft seal because it's leaking. Is the timing belt sprocket on the crankshaft pressed on, and is it hard to come off? Thanks!!
The sprocket on the camshaft is not pressed on and is easy to remove. TIP I usually take a bungee cord and hold the timing belt in place on the sprocket once removed from the camshaft. This way you only need to put the sprocket back on and you will not need to re-time the engine.

Well both, you need to keep tension on the timing belt as you remove the camshaft sprocket and timing belt together but you want to make keep the tension on the timing belt so that it does not move on the crankshaft as well. you will need to loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley and then re-tension it once the camshaft sprocket is re-installed. I is a little tricky and I would not recommend it for a first time project.
Thanks for your help. I finally was able to change the seal. Easy job. The seal was brittle/hard. There's other leaks I have to deal with, but this is the main engine oil leak that I had.
what type of spark plug wires? And pistons?

The plug you have could got to your knock sensor. The knock sensor is on the engine block behind the starter.
Go to 9:33 in this video to see the knock sensor.

It's not the valves it's the valve lifters. On these cars the lifters are solid shims. The way to "adjust" them is to measure the clearance distance between the lifter and the cam shaft lobe when the cam is pointed up, then compare that to the spec clearance range and if it is off, you replace the lifter shim with a shim of a different thickness that brings the clearance distance into spec. Is there a difference between the 4afe engine and the 7afe engine because I'm looking to put a 4afe in where a 7afe was
I have done that swap many times. the difference is the 4afe is 1.6L and the 7afe is 1.8L the plastic front engine covers look identical at a glance but are not so be mindful of that. the 1.8L will have a little more power but both will work and they are plug and play other than the front engine cover size due to the engine block of the 1.6L 4afe being a little shorter from the lesser displacement. Good eye, yes there are two oil pan configurations, a one piece and a two piece. This one is the two piece.

I do not build engines for others, but as long as I didn't have to remove and install the engine, I would do a build for about $650.

No, I've only used the OEM gear box, not sure if there is another that will be direct fit, but there may be other applications such as the Celica that you may be able to find the same gear box as is on the corolla.

Lifters needed adjusting, the adjustment is changing the size of shims, not a knock. but good ear ;)

Why did the engine you rebuild pop a rod? Any ideas? I have seen this happen on rebuilds of the 7AFE
I have no idea what you are talking about, I've never had any car I've owned in 50 years thro a rod. I rebuilt the engine because I wanted to. It was fine before I took it apart.

What were the torque specs on the rod bearing caps?
Shop manual. Never use torque values from someone on the web.
@@Engineerboy100 Ah thank you! I was giving up because the Celica forms for the 7AFE, and no one posted any torque specs for the bearing caps. I'll see if I can find a shop manual in my area!
