The Grand Cross was a general officer's award, and was awarded only to those generals who made an outstanding contribution to a successful campaign. Field Marshall von Hindenburg was awarded the Grand Cross for his defense of eastern Germany during WW1, destroying two Russian armies in the process. Goering was awarded the Grand Cross because of the decisive contribution the Luftwaffe made to the German victories in 1939 and 1940, the blitzkreig wouldn't have worked without it. Well said.
Just for the wrong cause
if it was an american woman, we would have seen a hollywood film abt it.

What cause?
Not getting raped and/or exterminated?
It`s well worth to look at what happened in 1939 in poland when the war started and the by now declassified diplomatic exchange surrounding it.
Mark Felton uploads are the highlight of day I swear I've learned more from his videos than school
Every video I watch from Mark Felton comes as a revelation of facts I could not have even imagined. I'm always inspired to further research. This Felton guy holds Living Legend status in my eyes; I'd very much like to shake his hand and thank him in person. He is an educator par excellence.
As a lover of documentaries, I too love Mark’s videos.
"Flak helper", my godmother was one, manning a Flak Tower in Vienna
"Manning"..... careful, the progressive left may declare a Fatwa against you.
@@brendanhere.6400 not only is this comment hilarious but I havent heard that word since I learned it in HS. Thank you good sir and great advice....they are brutally retarded the left is.
Thats so cool, what a badass!

@@brendanhere.6400 Really? Do we have to suffer you political bullshit on these esteemed channel?
Mark is the king of World War Two historians!!! Fact!!!!
He definitely deserves the Knights Cross of the Historians Iron Cross :). With Swords & Diamonds, of course!
@@danielsimut8491 Don't forget to mention the version that's got the golden oakleaves with swords and diamonds.
@@danielsimut8491 Looks up definition of "fan" in dictionary, sees picture of Daniel Simut. Well payed sir. Hopefully Mark will dedicate a video to you.
He's the teachers teacher, hell he's the who;e damn school!!!
1000 times better than any german historian
Very interesting Mark. Many brave women died in WW2 in all sorts of circumstances. They were certainly vital to the war effort in the UK, and nobody should ever forget that, from Land Girls, to Nurses, to factories and all three services. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude. Keep up the good work Mr Felton!
far more men dead.
@@DarrenMalin You don't need to be dead to suffer. A lot of rape victims would rather have been killed .
And they where killed . They may not have been fighting but they where on the front line
More civllians died and die in war . War is an equal opportunities killer. More so than disease
Many years ago a friend of mine found a genuine Iron Cross when clearing out the attic of an old house we were renovating, it was in remarkable condition. I'm not sure what became of it. Great video and as informative as ever, thanks Mark.
Really hope it hasn't been destroyed like many are.
OK, 3 degrees of separation here. Growing up, my best friend who's last name was Hanakow, told me of his German born great aunt. In the late sixties she had shown him her Iron Cross! She told him she won it for manning a flack battery!!!
Pardon my exuberance. Having some documented historical evidence to back up this here-to-fore apocryphal tale from my youth is PRICELESS to me!
Thank you so very much Dr. Felton for profoundly validating my passion for history. Respectfully yours!:-) 🙏 🖖
@Barry Dysert
" .... she had shown him her Iron Cross! She told him she won it for manning a flack battery!"
As a german native with some military experience I can tell you. Nope, that can not be the truth.
To do this ( manning a Flak-Batterie => Eisernes Kreuz ), she must have done a lot more than just been a member of an anti-aircraft battery. The iron cross was awarded exclusively for proven acts of arms and special bravery too.
What a brave woman serving our land, hats off to her. Reminds of the first time my grandfather showed me his
You mean that she won it "womaning" a flak ;)
@@arizonabusinessleague918
You may say so, but the original: "Das Eiserne Kreuz wird ausschließlich für besondere Tapferkeit vor dem Feind und für hervorragende Verdienste in der Truppenführung verliehen."
or with other words: The Iron Cross is used for special bravery in front of the enemy and for outstanding services in troop leadership.
It means nothing else than that her battery shot down a lot of allied airplains.
@@BoydCooperLegend I can confirm that, my grandfather got his for shooting down multiple allied aircraft at the western front, as part of the Jagdgeschwader 3
I stumbled your site in an accident and I couldn’t stop learning about what had happened then. I have always fascinated and loved past gem stories and histories. Thank your for bringing such an amazing documentaries from the past.
Mark Felton keeps my mental health afloat 🙏
I used Mark Felton's videos for information I could never get in textbook for my final A'Levels. Needless to say I passed. Continue with the good work sir, our bastion.
You always know that it's going to be good when you hear the words...."but it may surprise you to learn......". Absolutely brilliant!!!
At the beginning of each of these videos, there is an image of Mark Felton looking at you smugly, like he knows something you don't ......And it's true, he does know something you don't! Luckily, he's willing to share that knowledge with you! Thanks for another great vid, Mark!
Thanks Mark for all your work in bringing us a side of history we never would have seen if not for you.
I always thought I knew a lot about WWII, Mark Felton just showed me I know hardly anything, this is top information and research 👏.
Thank you Dr Felton for making WW2 easier to understand. I've learned far more from your marvelous story telling than any text book or teachings I ever had in school.
You know it sister!
Watching while on my lunch break, Never Stop Learning!
Same.🤙
You have an excellent Narrator's voice Mark and very well presented documentaries. Well done.
This was one of the best documentaries you’ve made yet Mark.
I learn more from Dr. Felton than my own professors.
And that says a lot about the quality of Education kids are getting around the world
@Sonny
You’re missing the point, Sonny. There almost NO teachers in the system teaching the other side of History, the kind that Dr Falton does. And it is the school board who decides the curriculum, not the teacher.
That's because Dr Felton has to be good at what he does; your professors just have to have tenure.😎
Your answering questions I never even knew I should ask! Thank you sir.
Amazing how much resistance they managed to put up during the last years of the war, especially considering how grim and hopeless the situation was
I would guess it was less about Hitler, then defending your country, and then your town. No one would want their house etc destroyed
@@toddstevens13 They had a pretty shrewed idea how charitable the Russians were apt to be too.
General Officers did try and surrender in the West but the Brits & Americans effectively said 'All or nothing' as Russia (if not especailly Stalin) was seen as a genuine ally by then. Plus of course they wanted to completely control Germany rather than risk going to a third round twenty more years down the line.
@James That's the trouble with the youths ......

Still the best history ww2 channel on YT. Just killer stuff. Man, I would have loved to have had you for a history teacher. It was my fav subject in high school, and I considered being a history teacher myself, but public schools here in the US suck.
I’m 38 and just finally really learning about WW2. I don’t even remember history in high school, I remember one teacher. :( I’m slightly obsessed now and love this channel!!!
Out of all the military history channels, you are by far the most concise and prolific. Your access to video footage is unmatched. 👍✊️
Mark, your videos are incredible. I’ve seen just about every WW2 Doc and film made but your inclusion of the in depth historical research from so many different sources sheds new light on these subjects. Keep up the great work!!
I dated a young lady in Germany when stationed there during the late '80s. Her mother was formidable that I could see her attacking a tank.
Probably about 5 or 10 years too young though.
I gave this a thumbs up before even watching the video. I knew the content would be well researched and something that just would not be shown on television.
Sir Mark another great story. I learned something new today. So many Brave people on all sides. You never disappoint. 🇬🇧🏴🇺🇸
Truly Outstanding, Dr. Felton! Your research is impeccable. I have never seen a documentary on Women recipients of the famous German Military's Iron Cross or Knights Cross Of The Iron Cross, decoration. Your report was absolutely awesome! Furthermore, Your very detailed history of this famous military award was as entertaining as it was informative.
We military history enthusiasts are so fortunate to have a professional of Your capabilities working on this highly interesting, but vast and complex subject. As an old American combat Veteran, I sincerely Thank You, Dr. Felton for all You have contributed to the better understanding of modern Military History. I am compelled to also mention Your completely fair and impartial treatment of the subject at hand. Kudos to You,
Dr. Felton.

A whole new angle to Iron Maiden’s song “Women in Uniform.” 🙂
Dr. Felton excels above all other historians in his ability to uncovered and publicized the little known but socially and historically significant stories of the Second World War. And he does it with such elegance and panache. His tales are always so professionally well done and interesting to the point of fascination. I always look forward to enjoying them. Dry they are not.
I’m going to create the Mark Felton action hero. This dude kicks ass

I'm glad to see that Germany also awarded acolades to their Army Nurses, very often the unsung heroines of war. No matter what the country or side of the conflict, these women often were largely ignored. But just ask any soldier who was wounded in conflict, what got him through, it was knowing that he'd be looked after by these angels.
As always: Unique topic - unique content and great insight. Thank you! A fan from Berlin / Germany.
Dr Felton never fails to surprise me with the content of his videos.

Hi from Boston Massachusetts!! I absolutely love WWII history, I stumbled across this channel and OMG im in heaven, thank you so much for this channel. It will be 1am and I'm hooked watching this.
I give up... where on Earth do you find these gems- including photos and videos?! AWESOME job, Mark- keep them rolling!
I went to a mates house once. On the mantle piece in the living room were two photographs. On the right one of his father a Sgt in the Welsh Guards, standing up in the turret of a Cromwell tank. On the left, one of his mother handing a 88mm shell to the loader on a Flak Gun in Berlin. That was nearly 50 years ago, as I remember she was a lovely lady. They had three boys, my mate and his twin older brothers. War is a cray thing!
This channel, for me, provides so much context about ww2 woven in intresting and diverse stories. Plus, he has a great narrating voice, as immersive as David Attenborough.
