It is always a great day when someone reacts to The Millionaire Waltz! Yes, the song is a real waltz, 1..2..3 or 3/4 timing. A lot of bass players often think of the bass line in this song as John Deacon's best work, it is quite technical, intricate and melodic. But it might have been Freddie who wrote the bass line, still John played it well. A very underrated aspect of this song is Freddie's piano playing, there is some great piano playing on this song. Freddie's expression in his voice is magnificent on this song, this is a masterclass in expression. Almost every line and a lot of the words are sang differently. The song has lots of different tones and colours, Freddie even uses his lower register in the lead vocals, which is very rare on Queen songs. You will find most of the lower notes in the back up vocals. They did some decent live performances of this song, despite the fact that this song is quite complex. But they only performed part of the song in a medley. The Millionaire Waltz live in Houston 1977 ruclips.net/video/gBJd-ZoT30Y/видео.html.
You are not completely wrong by thinking about Bohemian Rhapsody when listening to this song. The album, A Day At The Races 1976, was released just about a year after A Night At The Opera 1975. The whole band was very much still high on the success of A Night At The Opera, Brian May has said that with A Day At The Races it felt as if they were still busy making A Night At The Opera. He called the albums companion pieces, and he has said that they could have been released as a double album. Queen was still hungrily writing songs, and musically they were still in the same mode. Upon it's release A Day At The Races was criticized by the critics, for the similarities with A Night At The Opera. But the album, has gained critical support over the years. Queen only really changed their direction with the release of the News Of The World album in 1977. The song also includes a classical style, and the song also has different parts just like Bohemian Rhapsody. It it has been called the younger sister of Bohemian Rhapsody.

  • @deeremet9702
    @deeremet9702 4 года назад +9

Hi Hap. Coming out of the shadows for the second time. IMHO this is one of Freddie and Queen’s masterpieces. It’s not a song but a work of art. I think of it as a song of celebration. The closest I can come to explaining my line of thought is comparing it to a classical piece that starts with an allegro, changes key and timing to change to an adagio, changes again to what I consider a scherzo and then joyously completes the circle back to the allegro. One can really hear his love for the arts in this one song. I don’t know if that makes any sense at all, but it reminds me that most things in life are circular (the circle of life, relationships, friendships, etc) and if we’re very lucky, then they are as triumphant as this song as well. Please don’t hold me to the exact terms, as I am not a music major. I just played in a school orchestra for 7 years many, many years ago. Love your channel and thanks for reacting to this wonderful piece of art!

I think the Bohemian Rhapsody feeling comes, because the song is full of changes, from sweet crooning to rock parts and back. I always thought of the Millionaire Waltz as a nice album song, but not that much as a stand alone song.
There is a lot going on there, but, as you say it, the bass is really crazy. If you listen to the song again, with drawing the attention to the bass, it's really exceptional.
Personally, I think there are a few too many changes, but I dearly love the crooning parts.
The picture fom 5:54 is from Knebworth, their very last live show ever (with Freddie), the last show of the Magic tour in 1986. The crowd was about 150.000 people. The put the date on the schedule as there was so much request for tickets, and Wembley was booked for something else, so they couldn't add a third night.
The biggest crowds they ever had were in South America, there were up to 400K audiences.

Then, you went with the flow and started listening to all of the intricacies in this song which takes the listener up, down and all around as Queen does so masterfully. Thanks for another great, thoughtful reaction! Would love to see you react to: "I'm Going Slightly Mad". A brilliant song and video, sadly towards the end of Freddie's life - but it is a testament to his perseverance, humor, singing and acting abilities - and shows why he was simply the greatest. This song is so gorgeous. It goes around in a beautiful circle from beginning to end. I love the different switch ups in this from the bass at the start then from the waltz part to the up tempo part then back to the waltz tempo and finally the crescendo towards the end with the vocals and drums coming in - just magic . Roger Taylor said this song was more complex to put together than Bohemian Rhapsody. A Day At The Races is a wonderful but often overlooked album. There’s not a bad song on it in my opinion. Sorry for raving but I love this song so much. Thank you very much for reacting to this gem. PS - yes that pic is Hyde Park from a free concert Queen were involved in. I don’t know the date though.

This beautiful song is actually dedicated to John Reid their manager at the time. A little "Thank you" for his help getting out of the shitty contrat they had with Trident together with Jim "Miami" Beach the lawyer he suggested. The turn of events and signing with the right label made Queen finally to millionaires after enduring poverty for a long time despite having albums out and touring. Just a little tidbit. In that bit where Freddie sings "My fine friend, Take me wiz you unt love me forever..." he is imitating the voice of one of his favorite actresses, the scandalous Marlene Dietrich. I also read that the album titles for "A Day At The Races" and "A Night At The Opera" were taken from the names of Marx Brothers movies.

I think the abrasive beginning portion you're talking about is supposed to function as a type of foreshadowing or mirror for the rest of the song. Because you've got the piano on one side and it's kind of sonic opposite on the other with John's bass. Then throughout the song we flip between the kind of flouncy retro love song and the aggressive rock, the beginnings of love and the presumed ending, and towards the end the hushed breathy lyrics and the playful tune again. It's all very contrasting stuff but it all smooshes into one cohesive story and song by the end, just like the beginning bit does. That's how I "read" it anyways. 😁

This song is one of the Queen's underrated songs. You can react to Teo Torriatte, this was written by Brian May. They sing in japanese in the chorus.

One of my favourite songs. Can you imagine that one live! Part of a medley but all the elements of the song are there & great to see they can reinterpret a song to make it fit live.
Check out The Millionaire Waltz/You're My Best Freind live from Houston 1977

@@HAP3SPEAKZ A lot of them will be bootleg audio only. Think Houston 1977 is the only version filmed. Again it can be only be classed as reasonable quality. Plus without being back to back with You're My Best Friend it comes to an abrupt end.

This from my favorite album all time, A Day at the races. Every song on this album is great and unique. Tie your Mother down is my favorite from the album but I think a song like Long Away also couldve been a hit

Do you remember that the song Death on two legs was "dedicated" to their previous producer who was stealing from them? The Millionaire Waltz is about John Reid (Queen and Elton John's manager at the time) who, unfortunately, went back to produce Elton John's songs. The "song parade with love everywhere" is Queen being Queen again (and making money). Freddie was very happy! he was feeling "like a million dollars"

I love this song because it is so special and versatile and with special harmonies. It is Queen's power to create multi-part sound works with different styles. This is a great musical creation. Completely new, interesting and professional. Thanks for the great comment!

Jealousy and See What a Fool I've Been are nice little gems, often overlooked, also Teo Torriate 1979 Japan, and Roger wrote Ride the Wild Wind but I prefer Freddie's version of that song, not done live as it is one of Freddie's later recordings. Thankz for reviewing every genre of their music. You are greatly appreciated

Of Course Freddie always had a particular genre of music he was toying with , in this case the classic or operatic waltz.. and I am sure as a few commenters have eluded, that he may have had some of his Idols in mind to whom he was poetically referring .But I think at the end of the day Queen in all their magnificent , virtuoso musicianship were here to send a musical message to other bands and artists. "HEY, Bet you cant do this !!"
