    I feel like you kinda missed the second pointer. If you watch Gannon, getting into his power pocket isn’t done actively, as it shouldn’t be. Whereas your first takeaway from that was to brace and actively pull into the power pocket. Gannons arm in the second demonstration (the right way he was showing) isn’t fully extended before he brings his left shoulder forward. His turn into his brace straightens his arm before it passively comes into the power pocket on its own. AKA, there’s a good chance your arm is not nearly loose enough, to the point where it feels like it does virtually nothing at all outside of the elbow being raised high like he shows for the first tip.

    I love these analyses from pros and coaches. This was very informative, and makes total sense. I've never understood how to get the disc closer to my body when holding it flat, but tilting it as it goes through makes so much sense. I've gotten into the bad habit of holding my angle of release throughout the whole motion, which I didn't even realize was a bad habit. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can do some field work!

    • @overfiend75
      @overfiend75 Год назад

      It's interesting, no? I do this naturally, and had actually been working to correct it before realizing that some top throwers (e.g. paju, lizotte) do it as well. Even on a hyzer shot, in slow motion you will see they get to the power pocket on anyhzer. I think doing this also serves the secondary function of engaging the wrist at the hit (as the wrist rapidly brings the disc to the appropriate release angle), which provides a bit of additional power and reinforces a nose down release.
      That said, I am not entirely sure keeping the disc on a single angle is necessarily a 'bad habit.' Probably for a lot of folks, working this detail into their backswing could mess up accuracy in a way that makes it not worth it.

    Tried this new form today with the disc turned down, and it helped a lot. I still need some more reps in to really be able to control the release angle better, but in general I am able to generate a lot more snap and spin on the discs I'm throwing. I have distance drivers that I've always thrown flat and straight turn completely over and burn into the ground today from doing this. I am pretty short and being able to now pull in closer and get my elbow up in the power pocket made a huge difference, thanks for sharing this!

I can now easily hit 380 on command, and I don't have to try one bit. I think this could work for anybody, you guys should try it! Great video dude. Love these project 100s

    Really appreciated your comment about flippy vs overstable discs and throwing style. I tend to get really down on myself when my farthest throws are always with understable discs and would even say to myself that my distance doesn't count because I threw something flippy. But I've always had the tendency to release on hyzer angles which lead to me performing better with understable discs because I can get that hyzer flip distance. Anyways it's just nice to see things from a different perspective as opposed to telling myself I suck because I only throw far with flippy stuff. I know a lot of people would probably still think that but at the end of the day your scorecard isn't showing the disc you threw. Why should I sacrifice my score just to say I threw a destroyer when I can perform better throwing an enigma? Like always love your content keep it up man ✌🏻

    Tried a few practice throws before my round today with that downward tilt style pull thru. My distance and accuracy took a hit, but then again, it was only a like 4 throws. Really not enough time to get comfortable with it.
    One thing I can definitely say for certain is that it is MUCH easier to keep my wrist loose doing it this way. I've struggled keeping my wrist loose while firmly pinching my pointer and thumb together in the grip and pulling the disc thru horizontally.
    Played the rest of my round my normal way, but am really looking forward to taking this method to the field for a few days and see if I can get it to click. There's definitely a method to this madness.
    Also want to put more work into the pinched fan grip drives. Early on I adopted a 2 finger grip and was making distance gains. Everyone was saying that the 4 finger Power Grip was where it was at, and ended up resorting back to that instead of sticking with what was working for me.
    Recently saw a couple vids where they mentioned this pinched fan grip and how it allowed the disc to more freely rotate out of the hand and snap better. Someone said Simon used this grip also.
    So maybe, since I want to put work in on both, will see if I can put the 2 together into my next few field work sessions. See how it goes.
    I haven't been playing long, just a few months on and off, and seem to be stuck at 300'-340'. On my local course, Ocean County Park, NJ, if I can possibly push 400' I'm sure I can finally get a hair under par. My best so far is only E with most days between +2 and +8ish.
    I know for a fact I'm lacking some spin to keep my discs up longer. When I first started I was messing with different grips. The 2 finger grip I mentioned surely gave me more spin. First week I hit just shy of 400'. A couple weeks trying to work on better form, and resorting back to the Power Grip, and my distance was down. Accuracy up, but distance down.
    Long road ahead, but stoked on learning. Just wish I found this game earlier in life when I was younger and had a massive cannon for an arm from playing baseball.
    Stoked to give some new stuff a try.
    As always, good vid.
    Keep pushing bro.

    I wouldnt say an Enigma and Pharaoh is really flippy. People get so caught up in the molds they're throwing. Everyone wants to throw a Destroyer, DD3, or a Rive, when they really shouldn't. These same people will throw very lightweight versions of those discs just to be able say to throw them. Or maybe a super beat in version that really is a griffin disc they won't be able to replace. I started keeping my off hand a bit tighter to my body, I model it after Drew Gibson. This has helped me keep my rotation (not rounding) smaller/compact and therefore quicker from full extension to release. Have you considered that at all? I tried this tip from Gannon a few months ago because of a different video about pronation and how it can help keep your nose angle down. I’ve since noticed many pros setting up like this: Gibson, Wysoki, Macbeth (sometimes), Oakley…the list goes on and on but I think Ricky and Drew are the two that make it most obvious. I just noticed that it’s really hard to throw any sort of Hyzer with a flipper disc like this because it almost always forces an Anhyzer angle or flat release out of my hand which is death to any under stable disc that you want to not be a roller.

  • @Thebrianweissman
    @Thebrianweissman Год назад +1

    Your biggest issue, by far, is happening between 8:08 in your video and 8:09. You are getting turned around completely backwards as you move into your plant step, with your left knee and foot pointing almost 180 degrees away from your throwing line.
    That position is causing your weight to remain trapped between your feet, making it impossible to shift forward until you’re very deep into the swing itself. You can tell when a person has shifted their weight forward by what happens with the back knee.
    In your case, your back leg is completely straight until the disc is well inside your center of mass, meaning you’re throwing almost two-footed! Imagined trying to throw a baseball with both feet glued to the ground, it’s so awkward and slow.
    To really improve, you need to focus on one-legged drills, and learn the feel of what it means to have your brace accept all your body weight and momentum before you even think about engaging the upper body. You should see your back foot leaving the ground, and your knee inverting ideally before your shoulders have turned forward to engage the swing.
    Watch a few slo-mo clips of really powerful throwers like Paige, Paul, Drew and Eagle, and notice how early their back knee inverts in their swing. This is happening because they’re getting into perfect dynamic balance over their brace leg before they even think about doing anything with the upper body. Many of the problems you’re having with your elbow aren’t fixable when you’re throwing two-footed, but will autocorrect as soon as you’re pivoting organically in a tight axis with all your weight centered over your brace leg.
    I recommend the excellent videos by the content creator “Seabas22”. He has an entire video devoted to the one-legged drill that should help you address your biggest failure point.
    Also, not to disparage Gannon, but the kid is an absolute giant, who has been playing disc golf since he was tiny. Gannon learned to throw organically, using a kid’s instincts, and may not even understand the biomechanics of what his body is doing. You’re far better off getting advice from someone who learned to throw well as an adult, which is usually an incremental process of steady improvement from a starting point of relative ignorance.

  • @NickCarroll
    @NickCarroll Год назад

    I feel like more and more people are talking about this elbow drop issue than ever before. I have it, and I'm working to correct it, but I'll share with you what's been told to me.
    Lower the disc at reachback, pulling below the pecs.
    The forearm, disc and elbow should be on the same plane, and flat.
    Point the wrist down (pour the coffee) but not too much.
    Side note: I personally have a problem with angling the disc that sharp downward in the first half of the swing. I know some players like Simon and Gannon do it, but I think it's not a best practice, but something they've done they've been able to avoid issues using. I'm more of the Scott Stokely and Jaani Länsiö mindsets of keeping throws as mechanically simple as possible, but clearly many pros do a lot of sophisticated things in their throw, and ultimately they decide what's best for them.
    Regardless, love your growth, and the growth of your channel, Anthony!

    How do you think about controlling nose angle with that briefcase carry wrist position? Before I’d just focus on pouring the coffee the whole way through but now it seems harder to do that the whole way.

    Definitely try a 170 star Corvette. I throw around 330. And it seemed like the harder tried the shorter I threw. Well I have been sick the last few weeks and been watching lots of form vids including yours. Especially paying attention to keeping the feet in their own lane on the x step. And Tempo, moving slow to fast like a whip.
    Went out today and consistently threw 380+ and broke 400 for the first time twice in the first 8 throws. Corvette. Maybe my story is also a testament to resting to gain distance.
    Have not thrown in 3 weeks.

    Nothing negative, just a couple of comments. 1. There are a number of ways to throw 400'. Could be S curve, could be all hyzer, could be roller, etc. Throwing overstable discs anhyser and throwing "flippy" discs all hyzer 400' are 2 different shots. If you are throwing 'flippy' stuff, then for your distance shots, make sure they are getting a full flight vs just flip up to flat and hyzer out. 2. When you are showing the disc into and out of the 'power pocket', it would be helpful for players learning and watching you if you didn't extend outside the frame of your body when you are talking about it :) You don't do it when you throw and multiple times you will show it properly, but when you're just talking and moving your arm without consciously thinking about it, it's not natural to turn your body away from the camera and keep your arm inside your body frame. It's weird, but I think the consistency would help those watching. You see it all the time, I think it's just natural for us because if you extend in front of you it looks like you are throwing in the wrong direction :) Happy to see you back over 400' again! Nice to see Gannon helping you out.

    Hey man, I’ve been following you for a while, and I really dig what you’re doing. After watching your left side, I think you could be much tighter and stronger if you turn you left foot and knee tighter into your brace leg. Uli talked about this in one of his videos, but consider the line that your left knee points as being the line the disc follows. Actively turning on the back foot, and keeping the down and in will allow you to push harder into the brace leg. Just my thoughts. Definitely not a pro here, but on my own mechanics journey.

    The hardest step in disc golf is to go from pulling to whipping. Wish I knew that from day 1 cause you kinda have to start over from scratch and relearn everything

    But... Why haven't someone told me this as a tip (Ok I could've tried it myself... They tend do say that showing the top to the camera is bad, flat is preferred) This gave me some more room to work with, gonna try it next session!

    Who TF are these people saying if you aren’t throwing max weight Star Destroyers or Nuke OS’s 400+ so it doesn’t count. Cause I would like to slap them. It counts bro. It all counts. Hyzer flipping is objectively the easiest way to throw farther cause you’re guaranteed to get a full flight and it pushes straight for the high speed part of the flight. Most people should be bagging a healthy count of understable discs beginner and expert for that exact reason. Good luck to your efforts sir, hope to see you on tour.

    There is no reaching and pulling. Only shoulder turning. Once you think about that traps get themselves out of the way and your arm passively goes where your joints want it to go through the path. Thinking anything about reaching and pulling just gets muscles activated and in the way trying to control the path and prevents rotation.
    I stay forward as long as possible. Then at the last second I think about getting punched in the back shoulder and then trying to turn it back as fast as possible.

    The two points you take up in this video is point on. A problem you have is that your brain workd to fast sometimes. Work on this for a couple of months, and dont get distracted with other things during that time. This is offcourse if you priority is to throw far.
