    Great vid! We have about 25 palms on our property in New Mexico with very sandy, low nutrient soil. I'm currently studying better fertilization methods such as root soaking, foliar, and granular, along with micronutrient supplements. Oh, you have an amazing yard too!!

      what works well for you for palms in NM? Meaning what brand(s) do you use for palm fertilzer

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  Год назад

      KS Not sure what brands are available in New Mexico, but you should look for an 8-2-12 formula with 100% polymer coated nutrients. Hope that helps, and thank you for watching the channel. Happy Gardening 😊 🌴

      @Rocketman0407 Год назад

      Try to build the soil from the top down. Incoporate manure, compost or wormcastings around the palm. Mulch on top of that with whatever mulch you got at hand. Watering with worm tea will be benificial to build bacteria as well or compost tea. Fish emulision and liquid kelp is great as micronutrient sources.
      Personally I use Palmgain, Its organic and contains everything you need. If palm fertilizers are too expensive try to find something along the NPK ratio of 2-1-3. It does not need to exact, but make sure the Phosphorus is not high.

    • @Rocketman0407
      @Rocketman0407 Год назад

      @@KS-op5hbmost things will work great. Just make sure the phospurus content is not too high. So a Ratio of 2-1-3 roughly is what you are aiming for. Make sure it contains micronutrients as well.
      If you want something organic and Cheap I would try alfalfa meal combined with a small dose of bonemeal combined.

    Darla, hello😊 Thank you so much for this. I have been using the Palmgain and then Sunnyland, but still not happy. Today I noticed those spots you spoke of on the fronds. I was thinking of purchasing the palmgain again but now I think I’ll try your recommendation. Where did you purchase it? Again, thank you!😊

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  Год назад +1

      Hello donnabeasley251
      Fertilizer can be confusing, but if you can remember, just 2 things 1. Use an 8-2-12 formula and 2. Find a blend that has as much polymer coating with the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium as possible. I purchased my fertilizer from a professional place called Site One here in Bradenton. If you can find a local landscape company, you might have better luck. Making sure the fertilizer stays in the soil as long as possible (slow release) in my experience is your key to success. Thank you for watching the channel and Happy Gardening 😊

    I found your channel by searching for "Florikan Palm Tree Fertilizer". We are in northern Palm Beach county and 2 blocks from the beach. Our landscaping is entirely in sand. We are using river rock for mulch, so we are not able to effectively build up our soil. I came to the conclusion that I needed to use Florikan for fertilizing all of my landscaping which includes palms, Clusia, and other native plants.
    My question is what local nursery/distributor do you recommend for purchasing Florikan? I would like to support local business vs shopping online TY!

      @GrowingTropical  Год назад

      Hey, Dr. Dirt! Thank you! 😊The best advice I can give you is to use a good quality fertilizer, preferably an 8-2-12 and time release formula. You are correct about distributing at the drip line since this is where the surface or feeder roots are. As far as how much to apply, I figure length x width of my flower beds and follow the fertilizer bag instructions. It sounds like you have a lot of beautiful palm 🌴 trees in your landscape 😍 Happy Gardening

      Hey @GCar35! Me too ❤️ palm trees. Unfortunately, the big box stores like Lowe's and Home Depot don't carry the Florikan. I want to thank you for the information. I have been in Florida since 91 I’m in South Daytona area and I have lost 14 trees because they said something in the air and then they tell me it was somebody’s dirty cutters and they tell me that I cannot plant in my yard in those areas because they will continually die, do you know anything about that? I am gonna go out and I’m going to find a fertilizer that you just showed and thank you so much. I hope I can get it here. If not, can you tell me the name of the one that you’ve been using just in case I can’t find, the one that you’re getting now I live from my yard and my queens and this new house that I’ve moved into. It’s just been terrible for Queen Palms. My neighbor hates him. I don’t know if he killed him or not but I need a way to get back in my yard so I can be happy.

    Wasn’t the 8-2-12 ratio meant for the soils mainly in Florida ? Many other universities for example suggest 3-1-2 is good for palms in containers ( meaning soilless or soil that’s different than what’s typically found in Florida soils. )

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Corey! The 8-2-12 formula is designed for the nutrition and health of the palm tree. The polymer coating is what's important for our sandy soil here in South Florida. There are probably several schools of thought when it comes to palm tree nutrition. This is what I find to work really well in keeping my trees looking their best. Happy Gardening 😄

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  5 месяцев назад

      Hi Elaine! You might not be able to find this exact product, so just look for a fertilizer blend of 8-2-12 in a time release formula. This is the most important. I know there are a lot of fertilizers on the market today, and it can be confusing. I would recommend going to a landscaper warehouse in your area for the best choices. Happy Gardening ☺️ 🌺

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  6 месяцев назад

      Hey John! While you don't necessarily need to use this brand of fertilizer, the formula 8-2-12 is what you would want to provide your palm trees, no matter where you live. This is the ratio that I researched from our State University in providing the best nutritional value.

  • @andresgarza3424
    @andresgarza3424 28 дней назад

    the only problem is that florikan is very expensive and the shipping if I am not in the US might also be very expensive😢

    • @GrowingTropical
      @GrowingTropical  28 дней назад

      I completely understand that! Unfortunately, fertilizer products have increased in cost, and the better the product, the more it costs. But the good news is you can definitely find a closely related product to get good results. Just look for an 8-2-12 formula that has polymer coated nitrogen, phosphate, and magnesium. This will be a good start and hopefully a little less expensive. Happy Gardening ☺️
