Been doing it for many years. My husband died 25 years ago and we cruised often before that, but I started cruising solo after my boys went college. Now that I am retired, I have ample time to see the world on my own terms. Although I enjoy cruising with family or friends on occasions, solo cruises serve my style perfectly.

I went on my very first cruise in March, and I went solo. I absolutely loved it. I always travel solo as I love the freedom it gives me. I wasn't bored on the cruise, and I never felt as if people were judging me for being on my own. People are so friendly on cruises I found I was always speaking with someone. I'm going on another cruise next year, and I will be going solo again.

This video is spot on! I started cruising solo "by accident" after my girlfriend and I had a parting of ways...fair winds and following seas. Her loss. Anyway, I refused to be disabled by this predicament so I booked my first solo cruise, back to back at that, on the Enchantment and what a surprise! A whole new world of other guests and wonderful crew! All the points you made about not having to worry or be accountable to anyone but yourself are spot on!
Dining? The MDR has the options which I equate to riding on a bus or hiring a private car. The table with several people is the bus where you can be very interactive with your table mates. A table for two, where I can sit alone is like a private car. No need for unwanted conversation. Close enough to the other tables so you can be neighborly if you choose, but you don't have to. And, if I make a friend during the day we can have dinner at my table. All sorts of options.
Downside to dining solo in the Windjammer, is if you need to get up from your table to get something, you have to let someone know you will be returning so they don't clear your dishes and allow the next diners to take your spot.
Also, I did not know until after about my 3rd or 4th cruise that I was getting double loyalty points. I took my first cruise on the Enchantment in December 2022 and I will reach Diamond PLUS this November 2024. No complaints and I tend to be Loyal to Royal! 😎😎😎

I went on an Alaskan inside passage cruise on Radiance of the Seas. My experience was awesome and I was placed in a solo cabin which was ideal for me. I liked the fact I could join others if I wanted in activities or booked excursions in advance that I wanted to go on. I did a lot of activities on the ship or observed from where ever I needed to be. The shows were fantastic and I sat wherever I wanted. For dinner, I chose to be seated with others to be social and it gave me a lot of flexibility to join in or not. I was happy and refreshed. Going solo for me was ideal since I had the experience of other cruises when I went with others.

I'm going on my third solo RCL cruise in December. I love it. I can plan my own activities, and while I am by myself, I am never alone. I can eat when/where I want and participate in the activities that I want. Solo shore excursions are fun because there are other people. I love eating in specialty restaurants by myself. I love cruising solo. It gives me some much needed "me time". I'm not crazy social but I have met some amazing people while cruising solo. Now I'm a smoker and the smoking areas onboard a ship do tend to give you some common ground with people and have that familiarity because you'll likely be back in that same spot at certain times (first thing in the morning, after meals, etc) I met up with some awesome people the last time I cruised solo and we went off the ship together to shop in port. It was a great experience and it really helped to make friends. My last cruise was in February and I'm still in contact with those folks.

I can cruise solo or with others. I do agree cruising solo has lots of advantages. One is that I don't have to wait to cruise. Another one is you can do what you want when you want.
My work around for the price is to book 2 people in the cabin & then one person will be a no show in which you will get back the port fees & taxes. Plus, if someone does decide to go with you, then they can pay their portion.
As far as dining alone, it can be a fun experience. I usually buy the UDP & dine alone but enjoy myself.

I'm trying out a solo balcony cabin and I'm really excited. Crusing solo is the only way to go. I been cruising for many years but in the last 30 years I have gone solo and what a good time I have doing hat. I meet many lovely people and families, and am not obligated to spend my time with any of them if I do not want. I last cruised on Royal Caribbean and I dined alone and loved it. The young waiters treated me like I was their mother or grandmother and it awas so sweet. When I was on a cruise to the New England States, it was a bit rainy and cool and I got sick and when my young waiters realized why I was not at dinner, they sent Cammomil Tea to my cabin each evening after dinner. They were so sweet. I make friends easily because I like to have a fun time and play the games etc. To be able to cruise alone, is so special and I am on Celebrity in July, heading to Bermuda. When I am not cruising, I am in Bermuda, for weeks at a time, when I can do it. Love the people there and it is my second home. This may be my last cruise and my last trip to Bermuda because I am 79 and you are taking chances at this age when you travel alone

My first solo cruise was in 2012, and I've been on 18 solo cruises so far. I've had a few other cruises with family and friends, but I think I prefer my solo cruises. I love not having to compromise - I can do what I want when I want. On my recent Icon cruise, I only ate in the MDR once, and that was breakfast. I wanted to try out some other venues (included and extra). I love to read, so if I can find a nice quiet comfortable shady spot on deck, I'm a happy camper. I book excursions just like anyone else. I do tend to strike up conversations with table mates, people I meet in the cafe, etc. but I run out of steam after a while and I'm ready for some quiet "me" time again.

My girlfriend can't make it because of her schedule and I will admit I have a minor trepidation about going it solo but I'm also looking at it as an opportunity to do something different and out of my comfort zone. The way I look at it even if it's the worse experience of my life (which I don't think it will be) it's still an experience that I can check off my list. I'm also going to places that I've never been before and always wanted to see so even if someone who would traditionally go with you can't make it I wouldn't let that stop anyone from trying it.

I ended up cruising solo once when my wife took ill a couple weeks before the cruise. The cruise was in the Med and had so many stops that I was never tired or alone. I have done many car and train trips alone so I knew how to enjoy myself alone. Yes you ended up paying more because of that single supplement but like you said you get the cabin by yourself and all of the activities you want for as long as you want. I had a table for 2 reserved and the benefit of that was I got served quickly and was out of the main dining room in time to catch the early seating shows. And one thing I learned from my land trips alone is when you get to attractions you will usually meet people who want to talk about it, so you don't feel alone.

Yes I cruise solo all the time. My first time was with Royal, 14 days across the Atlantic, I was lonely, all couples at dinner table, etc. Then I tried NCL, because I heard they had a solo meetup each day so I could meet other solos for dinner and other activities. I’ve met so many great solo people and had so much fun, that I continued to cruise with them for that reason.
Also the price is so much better on NCL. My daughter, husband & 2 kids are going on a Royal cruise. I looked at getting my own cabin and going too! But the price was ridiculous, 6 days on a mega ship was as much as I would pay on a 14 day with NCL. It’s seems you don’t even get a break with Royal on less port fees and taxes when it’s only one in a room. No I’m not paying twice as much for a ship full of kids along with climbing walls and water slides that I won’t use. Besides it’s way more difficult to cross paths again with the people you meet on the big ships compared to the midsize ships. I spend time with my family off the cruise ship.
I agree traveling solo is freeing, if you aren’t doing it all the time. But when you are single, I travel to connect with others. Budget is always a consideration because being single is more expensive at home and traveling. Your best advise was get on Cruise critic roll calls to connect with others before the cruise. And now there is often someone who creates a Facebook group for a particular cruise and those seem to be getting even more members.

I'm taking my first solo in Oct on Grandeur!! I definitely have a fear of having the, I wish someone was with me to experience this, feeling. I gotta make sure I get out of my head and enjoy it like everyone is saying! Looking forward to it though, especially the, I can do whatever aspect of it!

MDR can be noisy, loud and challenging to have conversations, though they do a good job of seating us solo cruisers with both couples and other soloers. Sitting at a table and eating with 6 or 7 people is something i only get to do on cruises.

My first cruise was by myself last year and it was a blast! There were plenty of single meet ups which people were looking to meet new people. I didn't really know what to expect, but I felt comfortable starting a conversation with. I am not the most outgoing person, but having a little bit of an excuse to start a conversation was great. One may think that the single meet ups are for possible romantic partners or something like that, but I didn't feel like that was the case at all. It simply felt like a bunch of people who were trying to meet others on the ship. Maybe they came with family or friends and they felt like they were third wheeling, or they were there with a group of friends as a large group. But everyone was there to simply meet other people on the ship.
Best thing about cruising solo is doing what you want when you want. I was able to do everything at my pace and on my time with very little exceptions. If I was to travel in any way by myself, solo cruising is the way to go.
Biggest downfall to cruising solo was that I could not justify specialty dining when the dining room was already included and available. Even though I opted to do my time dining for the whole week and sat by myself, the waiting staff was super friendly and the people who I sat around did opt to say hi by the middle of the week. We didn't have any deep conversations or anything, but people were friendly and didn't really care that I was dining by myself. It was definitely a time to recharge for some me time.
Other ways to save some money is try to use a travel agent, my agent was able to get me a military discount that I am not sure I would have gotten on my own. Other ways to save money is to avoid specialty dining and do not pay for wifi. You're cruising alone. You're away from everyone. Disconnect and don't over pay for things that can distract you from your cruise vacation. If I had wifi I would have been very tempted to check my work email. Just avoid it. If you want to connect with family back home talk to your cell phone provider and see if they have some kind of international deal. I don't quite remember what AT&T had, but I was able to make phone calls and post to social media at port with minimal cost.
Crusing solo does not mean that youre alone. There are many people to talk and connect with. Even to this day I am talking to a handful of people I met on the cruise ship. I consider them friends today!
Overall, solo cruising was a great experience. 10/10. Highly recommend! I am definitely ready for another cruise!

I got a terrific deal on a solo cruise in Dec 2021. Booked under the double points program and there was no single supplement added. So inside cabin for 7 days on Anthem cost my less than $600 and I got 28 points!

I would never knock solo cruising, of course. I have done other things like go to movies or out to dinner alone in the past and enjoyed it. I don't think I'd enjoy a cruise as much by myself. A huge part of the enjoyment of travel for me is sharing the experience and making shared memories.

I also go cruising solo. The only thing that bothers me is people, both crew and passengers, always ask why? It’s none of your business. But my favorite answer is that I’m retired and none of my friends could get off work. It’s great to stay on board on port days. You will have the ship to yourself.

I was on a cruise where I had to take care of my roommate. She fell a lot. She slept in, I was waking her at 1:30 to get going. She brought the wrong kind of wheelchair. It was an expensive nightmare for me. Now I have cruised solo a few times. Princess had some really good solo prices a few years ago. Only 9 percent, then it started going up. Same cruise was 40 percent. Still better than 100 percent. It was spring break. Not my favorite time to go. Flights and hotels were more expensive. There were a lot of bikinis everywhere on the Lido. I’m almost 70. I want relaxation and pampering on a cruise.

I am a Diamond+ member and I cruise solo 98% of the time. I am never cruising by myself; I am cruising with 4,000 of my new friends. The one think I recommend is do not eat in the buffet every night. The loneliest I fee is eating in the buffet. Go to the main dining room and take your phone or book. Have a great meal, the waiters spend extra attention to you because you are alone, and you can have your entire dinner in 20 minutes and be off to the early show. During meals, I catch up on my news on the internet and enjoy my dinner.

Went solo on my first ever cruise. My only con is that it is difficult trying to eat in the buffet when your alone because people will swoop in to take your table with the quickness. Even leaving a book to go for seconds didn’t help.

Solo cruising is great. WIFI - Not for me. I am old school and love the solitude time when I get it. Plus I journal, draw, knit and chill out. My work is always on the internet. Checking out on a cruise is an awesome feeling. Prices, you need to look at the deals when they come out. Grab them and you will be okay. When I cruise I meet lots of people, and many are curious of why I am alone, and the conversation takes off.

Hi Matt, I’m a solo cruiser sailing on RCCL for the first time in November of this year on Adventure of the Seas transatlantic from Barcelona. As a solo cruiser I wanted to give RCCL a shot. I enjoyed this vlog but I think it needs to be given a bit more context for anyone thinking about sailing solo that I have experienced. 1. Age/lifestyle of the solo cruiser. I’m under the age of 50, single, working professional. I prefer cruises over 7 nights and I sail off season. I think you see the red flags 🚩 right? Well I didn’t see the red flags until my solo sailing on Princess transatlantic and to a lesser extent my Virgin Voyages transatlantic. The problem is longer cruises attract a much older crowd of solo passengers that I have very little in common with. Sailing out of season also adds to this problem as typically younger, solo, working professionals can’t get extended time off out of season. 2. WiFi is essential BUT just because you purchase the WiFi Package doesn’t mean it will work. On the Princess transatlantic there was no WiFi for 8 days during the crossing. I had purchased the WiFi and on a ship full of people where I’m the youngest solo sailor with no one to talk to, let’s just say I went to a very dark mental place and was in tears. 3. Entertainment and activities are your life preserver 🛟 This is why it is absolutely essential to research a line’s entertainment line up and events before you sail as a solo. Carnival for a solo is great because of the Havana experience (I dance salsa), Princess has entertainment strictly for an older crowd so it sucked for me, Virgin Voyages blows all other lines out of the water with fresh, edgy, modern, unique entertainment and activities (but what else would you expect from the Virgin brand right?). I am hoping AOTS will keep me entertained with Boleros and ice skating but we will see. The TA on Adventure of the Seas I booked because 1. I got an inside cabin for $1200, 2. It’s over thanksgiving break so I only had to take 10 PTO days, 3. I wanted to give RCCL’s vibe a shot. I know the crowd is still going to lean older due to being 13 nights and a transatlantic but I’m hoping for the Carnival vibe. Let me know if you have any suggestions that might make this first RCCL sailing easier for me as a solo and might help me come back.

As the West becomes more isolated and individualistic, the share of the market ripe for solo travelers will grow and eventually outnumber the group travelers. Cruise lines should keep up-to-date and adjust their offerings to stay competitive in the market.

Problem is, RCL DOESN'T have enough solo cabins or even any on some ships. Plus, the cost is more than if it's two people sharing a cabin.

There are some transatlantic cruises that start in Europe and end in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Usually out of Barcelona. I think that's all.
