A "bad" cabin on a cruise is still better than being at work!

  • @Tom-hv2eu
    @Tom-hv2eu 3 месяца назад +70

Being in the U.S. Coast Guard and being stationed on a cutter, if the seas are rocking and rolling or your prone to motion sickness it is best to get a cabin in the lower deck, the higher you are the more swaying you will feel. The next is to get a midship or more in the "middle" of the ship; the more closer you are to the bow or the stern the more you will feel the waves as well going up and down. So remember lower and center is best. So I wish you fellow cruisers fair winds and following seas.

On our last cruise we had a guaranteed cabin and we ended up in the first cabin forward on the fourth floor of the Nieuw Statendam. It was the worst cabin we have ever been in after 30+ cruises. The heavy steel door which led to the Officer’s Bar was right outside our door and as staff came and went to the bar, the door slammed behind them. The staff also were talking very loudly as they passed by, obviously having had a good time. We heard that door slam on average once every five minutes until 2:00 am. At which point I went down to guest services. I was told nothing could be done about it that night but to come back in the morning. Thankfully the next morning at 7:30 am we were changed to a beautiful, mid ship, quiet cabin. I will never purchase a guarantee cabin again…not worth it.

I had just a regular crew door that slammed. I asked guest relations if they could adjust the door as even the crew that tried to keep it from slamming couldn’t stop that last umph to close -- they managed to do it.

Obstructed view cabins can be an incredible bargain on a cruise ship. I have found some that actually cheaper than an inside cabin (depending on the cruise).

In colder climates I like the Infinity balcony where you can get fresh air but wouldn’t use a regular balcony all that much. In warmer climates I prefer a regular balcony where we sit outside a lot and don’t have to heat the cabin.

We had an inside cabin with an adjoining cabin. It didn't have a small couch or loveseat, only a chair. The neighbors had noisy small children. Periodically one of the children would play with the adjoining door latch. It was a relief when the noisy family left after about three days.

My last cruise for my husband and I was a guaranteed inside cabin just like the photo on the left side of your video except the beds were pushed together. The Pullman beds made for a very tight squeeze to get in on the side of the bed. We basically shimmied up from the end of the bed so we wouldn’t bump into them. I don’t know why I thought they would be more flush to the wall. The room felt so much smaller because of that lost space. Never again!

I would refuse or try to change any connecting cabin or hotel room unless family is in the connecting room. We had a horror show in a hotel when the party started next door after 10 pm!!! We tried to sleep but the bed was on that wall as well. In the middle of the night, 2 am-ish, someone tried to come through the door, it even sounded like they were trying to break the lock!!! We called the desk and started talking really loudly next to that door that we were calling the police. Gradually the noise next door quieted down. When we checked out in the morning the desk clerk/ manager said when a staffer went to the room that night the tenants said WE were to blame!!!! Never again.

We booked room 12329 on oasis, which is the last interior balcony room, at the rear of the ship, overlooking boardwalk. We liked it because we had a good view of the ocean and were able to watch the aqua theater shows from our room. The only drawback for us was the long hike getting to the elevators.

The worst cabins we ever had- there were 2. One was an adjoining cabin with 2 hearing impaired women beside us. They talked very loudly day and night. We were so annoyed the entire cruise. The other one was on HAL Oosterdam. We booked a guaranteed cabin, and at the time I was having severe mobility problems. The cabin was very far forward away from any elevators. The ship hallways on some of the levels would be obstructed and we had to re- navigate a route to the room. It made for a very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience. I always choose my cabin, and I’m very picky! 😊

Thanks for the info on cabin arrangement. I always like to have the couch next to the balcony. It just fits much better for us. We cruise mostly on Celebrity or Royal. Your tip about the "wide" area of the cabin on the deck plan works for Celebrity. Royal has only rectangles for the cabins on their deck plans, so no help there.

There's almost always a room next door unless you have an end room, then what are you going to hear, people walking by or on stairs? The fact there are connecting rooms is less desirable than a window that is blocked & a bunk above your bed is crazy! There are connecting doors making them connecting rooms all the time in hotels, it's not a problem. Even if there is no connecting doors, one on each side, you can still hear people in the next room. 🚢

We did a guaranteed room on RC Independence and it was at the very back of the ship, with obstructed view. The bad: we were not going to look out and see the water down below, we were in the "cage", and I also think people could drop stuff onto our balcony (if you can call it a balcony). The good: the balcony (outdoor space? Patio??) was HUGE, and we did get to see the wake of the ship from it. Our son was 9 at the time and thought it was the coolest, weirdest room. It was a short, fun trip, and out of our usual DCL comfort zone. I also know that I don't get seasick because it was a wild ride back there but it rocked me to sleep.

  • @jeffreyclinard2002

I've booked a lot of inside rooms, some outside rooms (and obtained a few free upgrades from inside to outside / obstructed outside), and recently shifted to balcony. I always ask my travel agent for one sandwiched between two decks of staterooms, and away from lounges or other noise sources. Oh, I also ask for a non-connecting.
I've been in some weird rooms (back when I did guarantee insides), including a very far forward inside room with a support beam running through it. It was also the ship I had the worst seas on. I woke up to being tossed upwards out of bed (not by much, and not out, just up). The ship closed the buffet when the pancake syrup was tossed out of the dish. About 80% of the passengers were seasick, but, more telling, about half the crew was. My anti-seasick pills worked; I had no issues, but spent most of the day in the atrium reading a book.

  • @Gybing
    @Gybing 3 месяца назад

We aren't prone to seasickness or noise but found out that staying in the cabin all the way aft in a fairly lower level, you can hear the engine noise and feel the vibration all night long which is something you need to consider. I thought I am going to avoid aft from now on (or at least it needs to be in the higher decks).

  • @heatherqualy9143

I loved my inside cabin. We did spend some time in our cabin, but not a whole lot. And when we were in there it was to relax and sleep. It was very easy to do in an inside cabin because it’s quiet and, for sleeping, pitch black. I wish my room at home was that dark! When we wanted to relax looking at the ocean, there were plenty of seaside deck chairs well away from the pool area with very few other passengers walking by us.

We've done a balcony and a suite on deck 15 forward below the gym on Caribbean Princess. We heard chairs being put out, UT don't sleep that late anyhow. We've also done 2 full aft suites and an aft side mini. I found the vibration and up/down more annoying than the up/down forward. Mostly, we are always in minis center/center near the elevator and love it. I was in an obstruction ov re entry and thought I'd hate it. It was okay.

Celebrity Ascent infinite veranda - didn’t like it. I’d rather have a regular balcony. But I’ve gotten a regular balcony another time and there was a lifeboat right below us. The view of the ocean was blocked below. I also don’t like the oceanview cabins because I felt like I was on the water (deck 2) and the window was so filthy you couldn’t take pictures out of it.

We had the infinite veranda on Celebrity Flora and loved it. The room itself was very special so maybe that helped too. But the weather was such that we would open the window and it was really nice weather for it. The cabin wasn't too hot. Plus we spent most of our time on excursions or in the public spaces. I would wholeheartedly recommend it on that particular cruise. That being said, I would probably never book that room on most cruises. Rather have a real verandah.

I really want to know when the sun is up, but I have no use for an actual balcony. So the infinite balcony is not a problem for me. I did a last minute balcony, unassigned until arrival. As a solo and a balcony hey $650 for a 5 day balcony it was worth the risk. Attendant told me bording it was a partially obstructed view. Trying to take pictures and videos looking forward sure was. Looking aft was peachy! I met and hung out with two women a few doors down from me. Their cabin was $2700 booked a year in advance and two passengers. I booked 3 days before departure and all they could do was assure the cabin type. Free at Sea, 4 specialty dining, $100 to shore excursions at every port, it rocked. So what was the horrible obstructed view? Bulkhead support between my cabin and the one forward of me. I was expecting a lifeboat blocking my view. Lol

I always bring a turtleneck for glacier day, in addition to a fleece zip-up, a rain jacket with hood, and a pair of stretchy 'texting' gloves (so I can take pictures with my gloves on).

When I first started cruising, I wanted the cheapest rooms & I never had a problem with any cabin, because any day on a cruise is great. That is until until someone took me on a cruise with a balcony & I’ll never have an inside cabin again. There’s nothing like walking out on the balcony first thing in the morning & the last thing at night. Eating a danish & drinking a cup of coffee on the balcony while you’re waking up enough to get dressed to go eat breakfast is the absolute best & it’s worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!!😀

Oh, I’m dying to try those Infinite Verandah cabins. As someone who cruises on the inside of the ship, I reckon I’d probably love the room for the simple fact there’s a view, but the window opening would make my cruise feel SO much more premium than I’m used to!

We had a double whammy on NCL once. A window cabin that looked directly onto a lifeboat where the lights were on all night long, and just outside the door was the kitchen for the 24 hr restaurant and we constantly heard carts rolling by. We used to laugh saying we just had to open the door and reach out and get a late night sandwich.

It was totally private, unlike traditional balconies where you can hear the people next door……OR THEIR LOUD MUSIC.
Some complain they are noisy but we didn’t think it was noisy.

You're right, always makes sense with ocean view cabin to always have the bed on the other side of the room, not where you want to enjoy the sea scenery. Kind of defeats the purpose of enjoying the view if the bed is right there.

Loved our 15 day Panama Canal cruise on Norwegian Bliss in January BUT hated our deck 5 ocean view cabin. It was the first time I worked with a travel advisor and he wasn’t very informative or cautionary. The cabin was really tiny with the bed below the window and no sofa. It was located below the edge of the Q bbq restaurant . I swear the staff was dragging metal tables across the floor until well after midnight or 1 am. Customer service’s solution was to offer ear plugs. We also found we were right above one of the gang plank entries - fortunately that entry was only used a couple of times. Being nearer to the water, we got a lot of wave noise throughout the night. I was much more careful and chose our cabin myself after research for our next cruise. I went back with a balcony in a better location.

We just sailed in an Infinite veranda cabin on Edge to Alaska and we loved it. It makes us feel it's more spacious than other verandas that we've been on, and when it's opened, it's pretty cozy even on sunny days.
I've seen a lot of complaints about Infinite veranda on Icon recently that the air condition is just gone once windows are opened. I think the main factors are climate difference, and the design that separates balcony and cabin by curtains on Icon instead of folding doors on Edge class ships. In my view, infinite veranda is probably the best non-suite balcony cabin that cruise ships offer if sailing right itinerary in right time.

My worst cabin experience was with an adjoining room, and a noisy neighbor. I did catch them in the hall and mentioned the issue, and they did take care of it. I had a forward room on my Antartcia cruise. The motion was a little noticeable as was the noise as the ship hit larger waves but nothing bad.

It was the worst, we were right next to the anchor! Talk about loud!! It was insane. The noise started around 6:30am and continued till almost 8. Luckily after many hours of my husband complaining we were moved a couple of cabins further down the hall. It was better but still by the infirmary. We've been on 2 Holland American cruises and I have to say they are my least favorite line. Even MSC was better, and it was super crowded!

Our last 3 cruises have been balcony state rooms and I'd like to think that we won't book anything else. Our first one on RCL was a repositioning trans Atlantic cruise so it was basically the price of a porthole cabin. But I MIGHT under the right circumstances book an unobstructed port hole cabin (the first one had a lifeboat in front of the window) or even an inner cabin (had the best nights sleep in one).
Probably won't sail Celebrity nor RCL so I probably won't have to worry about the IV.

Just booked a guaranteed obstructed ocean view cabin because it was just $100 more than an inside cabin. Saw some photos of this kind of cabin on this ship, and the obstructions are mostly lifeboats. Looks like it will have a walking deck right outside. I was mostly wanting a little natural light - inside cabins can be VERY dark. For a view, I'll go outside. But I'm a bit worried about noise.

Found your information very useful. However, Celebrity seems to not currently show sufficient information to determine where the bed placement is. I find this very annoying, for the amount of money we spend on these cruises you should be able to determine your preference for bed placement. I would generally give Celebrity High Marks, but on this, on a scale of 1-10, I would give them a 1. I prefer the bed closer to the bathroom. My best guess is this not where we are going to be on the Eclipse out of Amsterdam next May 09 for 13 nights, spending over $10k.

My cabin is a balcony cabin in Baja deck 201 (deck 11) is one of the furthest cabins forward…from there to the buffet is a 950 ft to the rear…maybe 900 ft to the last elevator to the Horizon buffet. Not only that, all the other places a far like the atrium, we are using room service for our breakfast to save a long walk.

i disagree about the forward-facing cabin. I was on Radiance of the Seas to Alaska a couple of weeks ago. The room (7502) was listed as a "spacious ocean view", and it really was a lot longer than a balcony room midships (my sister had one of those). Even the couch was longer than what she had. I don't suffer from motion sickness, so I had no concerns there, even on the two days when we really were out in open ocean. While the window was above the bed, and separated from it by a long shelf because the window was at a slant, I still had nice views over the helipad and bow. I would definitely rebook that room.
