    'WOW" I got a shout out, and you made a video on something that many of us would like to see, including me. I really appreciate you making this video for me and the world,,thanks London Worms & Garden.
    I have only mixed Perlite into my container mixes and never grown straight out of it. If people have some lying around or get it cheaply it looks like a very good medium, as you said it's sterile and very clean, just needs a wash possibly to remove the dust.
    As you would already know, the tastes of these greens are just amazing and the health benefits even better.
    I like how you shown the roots, as Radish has an amazing root system, and yours look super healthy.
    If people were going to grow this way I would recommend that they use some liquid kelp seaweed extract to water them in once they throw a root.
    And even better still, maybe mix in some worm castings if you have some lying around.
    I thoroughly enjoyed this video, and extremely grateful that you made it specially for me.
    If you haven't subbed to this channel my friends, make sure you do before you go.
    Happy Gardening from Australia

      Thanks Marty - it was well worth the trip over.

      Your welcome my friend. I may be looking into starting my own seed business soon, as I am getting people ask me for seeds that are good for small space gardens. I plan to have microgreens seeds and seeds that grow easily and fast in small space gardens.
      Have a wonderful day

      I'd live in Bunnings if I had the option. There is a city a little over an hour away (Mackay) that has four of them. The area seems to be able to support each one as well.

    This might be a stupid - but I'm going to ask it anyway .....
    Once you've finished eating the micro-greens - can you wash out the perlite and use it again ?

    • @LondonWorms
      @LondonWorms  6 лет назад +3

      Veggie Back Garden Hiya 😊Yep that's exactly what I've done. If you look at 2.05 you'll see a thin hairlike root from the previous crop that that perlite was used it. I obviously didn't clean it off very well lol. Cheers 👍

      I throw mine into my worm farm, and reuse it later,,,lightens up the mix again. This goes for Vermiculite too

      @@LondonWorms I know this is very old, but just found it and very interested - HOW do you clean the perlite? Do you sterilize it to avoid disease?

  • @xLxrth99
    @xLxrth99 4 года назад +1

    nice video but i had to give a dislike because the perlite dust is really dangerous because it is so lightweight and its still on the microgreens and if you eat that that could be really bad beacuse you are eating glass. i woud say its better to use natural 5 millimeter lava rocks but grow on!!

    What is the difference between Micro Greens and Sprouts?

    • @martysgarden
      @martysgarden 6 лет назад +2

      Microgreens are grown in soil to the 1st or second tendril and allowed to grow longer. Sprouts are germinated in water and harvested much smaller,,,both are awesome.

    Hello, I'm a new subcriber. Sorry for asking a question about a previous video showing you growing vegetables in containers. May I ask exactly what compost you use to improve fertility, nutrients to grow such beautiful vegetable plants?

    • @LondonWorms
      @LondonWorms  6 лет назад

      D H Tran Hiya D H ... last year it was a combination of shop bought, manure, blood fish and bone and my own compost and vermicompost. As time goes on my aim is to be able to use more and more of my own compost and vermicompost so eventually that is all I will be using with some well rotted manure. 5 years from now the plan is not to have to spend a penny on compost or fertilizer as the soil will be so well fed ... and after that it's just a matter of keeping it that way lol. Feed the soil not the plants is an expression you might have heard and the more Ive read the more wisdom I think is in it. Cheers and welcome 😊👍

    Great tip - thank you. Really interesting, I have plenty of perlite, in fact I was wondering what to do with it. My problem isn't the cold - it's the heat. It's much too hot to plant anything outside just now - it was 42 degrees C not long ago : ( S Australia.

    • @martysgarden

      Add some liquid kelp when you water your micro's and you will get a much healthier and larger harvest. Hope that helps.

    Is Perlite safe for wild birds if they happen to eat it

    • @LondonWorms
      @LondonWorms  6 лет назад

      Hiya Robin. Good question. For birds that need and use grit to break the coat of seeds, such as pigeons, I can't see why it wouldn't be safe to use. But I'm no bird expert so I could be wrong.

  • @martysgarden

    I thought I needed to come back and watch this video again, as there is a lot good content in here.
    What I wanted to ask is,,I have been working on flow through Leachate style liquid tea and found it awesome in the bottom of the microgreens trays.
    I just started setting up my next one,,,I have mushroom compost in two layers with composted cow manure on the top as feed.
    I have done this with old chicken manure as a feed as well in the past..I guess my interest is e coli,,I know that the manure needs to be composted at a super high heat to be killed.
    What I am wondering is E coli in the castings if I decide to sell the compost, castings and microgreens in the future again,,,
    Maybe I need to change bedding material,,or work on cooking the e coli out.
    Any thoughts, or guidance would be appreciated,,as I am building a model for farming and as you know Ec coli is a no go zone.
    Many thanks in advance

      Hiya Marty www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0956053X16304111?via%3Dihub
      This is one of a number of scientific articles that show that worms have a positive influence in reducing soil borne pathogens such as ecoli, salmonella etc. I've other links but can't access them right now as I'm not home. I'll get the links to you tomorrow my friend. Time is also a factor with ecoli. The longer the casts are stored before use/sale the presence of the bacteria is vastly reduced - way down below the numbers that naturally occur in the lived environment and don't affect us day to day. Hope all is well mate. Will get those links over to you tomorrow. Should be reassuring 😊👍

    I would say that the nutrients come from the seed itself, I wonder if it would develop then in perlite without anything to eat.

    • @LondonWorms
      @LondonWorms  6 лет назад

      I'm guessing not as you say the initial burst of energy and nutrients needed must come from the seed itself and a little water as the perlite is sterile. Cheers my friend - hope all is well with you :)

    I know you want to eat these as microgreens but now you have me wondering if this would be a better way to germinate seeds for the garden instead of the paper towel method. I just noticed how good your root system looks so It's got me thinking.👍

    • @PlotToPlates
      @PlotToPlates 6 лет назад

      At least they would not stick to the paper towel if left to long.
      Sometimes I have had to cut around the seedlings and plant the seedling and a small piece of paper towel.

    • @p.c.6706
      @p.c.6706 6 лет назад +1

      Plot To Plates Allotment thank you. I found out the hard way by trying to get all the paper towel off that I was damaging the roots. I'm thinking if I try it his way I can skip the paper towel altogether and save a bit of money :-)

    • @PlotToPlates
      @PlotToPlates 6 лет назад

      Think I will give it a try too, nothing to lose.
      You can wash perlite and reuse it and save even more money, you would have to use some bleach or Milton to sterilize it at start of season.

    • @p.c.6706

    What do you think would happen if you added some biochar to the perlite? Extra growth and high nutritional value crop, or far too alkaline for anything to grow?

    • @LondonWorms
      @LondonWorms  6 лет назад

      Hiya SJ .. no I think for microgreens that might well be a great combination. It's an interesting question. If I can make some biochar at some point I'll try that little experiment.
