I started to add mosquito bits into my watering can and fungus gnats have almost disappeared.
Yes! They are the best and most effective way to kill the gnats :)
What happens when the bottom layer of ur alocasia is sitting in wTer? Despite being in perlite, still get root rot?
I love propagating with perlite. I wish it was heavier so it wouldn't wash away as easily but other wise its great.
yes! it is my favorite too :) pumice may be a good replacement for perlite
How often do you water the plants? Do you use a sprayer or just watering can? Thank you!
I’m trying this technique using Swedish plantguy video but instead of perlite, I’m using pumice & LECA. Less stress on the plant, I think. Looking forward to seeing how your plants do.

@@crazyplantgirldk387 I went back to straight leca. Whatever brand of pumice I used had a very high ph and I burned the roots. Perlite might be better choice.
@@marysunshine389 I am using a mix between Lezhuza Pon and Leca and I sm now so worried that my plant roots will get burned.

Omg. I needed this! I just placed my Monstera Deliciosa into perlite yesterday and the newly formed soil roots rotted! CRY.
Oh no! They will be okey, clean them out and spray with hudrogen peroxide. This time don't add water in first few days since you just clean the root :) and then add less water than last time you do, good luck!
@@Elvykiung Thank you, Elvy! I cleaned it and snipped the roots before throwing it back. Spotted 2 baby roots today! :D
Do you rinse off the peroxide before putting them in the perlite? I just found out my monstera has root rot.
i have questions about using straight perlite. usually i would just research myself but there is not a lot of info about using straight perlite out there. maybe someone here can help me lol
1- does it have to be able to drain into another container? for example, could you just put a plant and perlite in a glass container with no drainage?
2- since its semi hydroponic, is it ok to let the roots always sit in water like they do with leca? Or do you only top water and make sure there’s no water sitting. does it just depend on the type of plant?!
Yes you can do without drain but I form with drain add catch pot work better. It depends on how long the plant been converted to semi hydro. If it just convert no water reservoir, the after few month you can add reservoir in it
Great video. I always thought rule of thumb for me was to "water them alot and let them dry completely or when top 1-2 inch of soil is dry" but after doing this for 2 months now, most of my plants are getting sick, and it's probably due to overwatering or over-fertilization (i use 20-20-20). I might switch to perlite soil technique since I just keep watering my plants unconsciously... Can I ask you what size of pot are you using in this video? My plants are smaller leaves, so I might want to order that's smaller than your pots
it is 4.5" if you like to water all the time, do Terre carta pot it dry out faster

I sadly abandoned leca. My plants over 6 months just not thriving. Put back in soil. They are much happier. Really wanted to make leca work.

Very interesting. I like the idea & definitely perlite is readily available. Ill check out Alivia info too. You mentioned PON to, you havent tried it? Is that just another experiment that is similar? Ive got a couple of albo nodes coming so I might just use the perlite method this time.
I have plant my begonia maculata in pon recently and some other small plant :) I thin pon is fit for plant like constantly monist but I also see some else using it in monstera albo. They are more expensive so I'll do it slowly :)

Yah I did found the close container will got algae. For pumice mix the angel so far just at the bottom of the tray. Will see how things play out :)
try adding hydrogen peroxide to your water, it works great!

right now I have been using Golf Leaf fertilizer that work for both soil and semi-hydro every time I water, the ph is around 5.5. Do you find it better to grow in different ph level?

I saw a chart stating 6-7 band is best for aroids for absorbing most of the nutrients.

Do you have any information on fluoride in perlite? Some houseplants are sensitive to fluoride and I'd like to know if I should avoid perlite altogether due to fluoride. Having trouble finding any information on RUclips about it. Thank you!
No, sorry I dont have much info on it but I don't think there any mineral in perlite or pumice. These two substrate do not have ion exchange capacity. Perlite is man made, I don't know if it made with fluoride... I hope I can help but this is not my filed lol
