I was 15 years old when this ship sank, and I cried my eyes out when I heard it on the news that night. I still cry when I hear it, and I listen to it a lot. I can not figure out why it effected me so much like it does. I was living in farm country in Washington State! I had never even heard of The Edmund Fitzgerald! But it made me cry like a baby in 1975, and right now too. RIP to all who lost their lives that night, and my heart goes out to the ones who had to live without them.
I was 16 in northern Vermont and when I heard this song I could not get it out of my mind. I combed the school library looking for information about it but found nothing as it was too recent. Because of the song I wanted to see all of the Great Lakes and I still love them and the song. I had never realized the shipping activity that happens on the lakes. I wish I could have seen this video back in 1976!
Elizabeth, I was 16...turned 17 in December and joined the Army. I grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan, this song has stirred more emotion in me over the last 4 decades than any other. Gordon Lightfoot captured the essence of every one of 29 in this ballad. Pass it on, lest we forget. Peace be with you.
A first-class memorial to this captain and crew. Gordon Lightfoot's song haunts and will sadden me forever... Prayers for strength to all living family members...
My father, who has passed, and I fished for Walleyes up there back then. The lore of the Edmund Fitzgerald will stick with us Michiganders forever... RIP mates.
"The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times, for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald" May all 29 R.I.P. on this the 38th anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald!!!
The first mate when it down was my great grandpa's best friend. This song is important to us. I love this song. RIP Jack McCartney and the rest of crew.
WOW! Those 29 men who lost their lives that cold evening, deserve all the sadness we all feel for all of them. And all the respect we feel for them in our thoughts. *Rest in peace 29* you and your great ship will NEVER be forgotten. My hat off to the creator of this fine video.. Bravo!
I have been at Sea in heavy storms in the North Atlantic, and, to say the least it is a humbling experience.. God be with the families of those men! Doc Mike USN
this seens like it just happened yesturday...I listened to the live news coverage on my old transistor radio...the days before cable tv news and the internet
The pilot house crew all died quickly from water rushing as the bow nose dived to bottom cashing hard. The crew in the stern must of had the more horrific death (if they weren't knocked out) living longer when the stern went out of the water before breaking off. It would be terrifying filling up with water as it started to sink.
@@allencollins6031 Perhaps I missed the context of your statement. Every person on that ship was someone's child. Tragedy always weighs heavy on the heart of the compassionate.
ShadoeFax Not alone.GOD WSS WITH THEM THAT NIGHT.MAY ALL 29 HAVE GONE HOME WITH HIM AFTER SAYING A FINAL GOODBYE TO THAT GREAT SHIP THE EDMUND FITZGERALD.
@@tomwolak3362 maybe, but their physical bodies had to endure not only the sinking but the drowning as well, which I think would of been scary & painful. The scariest thought is that it's just sitting there at the bottom alone in the dark & in all the cold. That's horrifying to me.
Only god and the 29 souls knows just exactly what happened that fateful evening. In all honesty I'd like to think the 29 had no clue. that it hit them merciful and quick without suffering. Or it happened in such a way that they thought it was just one of many other times a wave had crashed them down that nite and nothing different. May they R.I.P. on calm seas and clear skies eternal
A more cautious captain would have but Mc sorely had a reputation for taking big chances with his ship and crew.On november 10th he tried bluffing one to many times and superior called his bluff and said YOU LOSE.
But The Arthur M. Anderson and another boat were out as well... The way I understand it The Anderson came about and returned to report the wreckage! That took guts to go back and try to help!! WOW
Mike Manners Your exactly right. Many other freighters have been lost with just as tragic circumstances but He immortalized the EDMUND FITZGERALD with that song. Not saying they are more worthy cuz many many mariners lie with their ships below the waves FORGOTTEN. TRULY SAD.
Well look at all the others that lay on the bottom of the great lakes no less important of famous that the fitz yet most are forgotten. Without thst song the fitz would be one of them.
This song is sad 😔😢! It reminds me of how Carpathia was a hero for rescuing the sinking Titanic’s passengers in 1912 and then in 1918 Carpathia sank from being Torpedoed.. :(
that water is so cold, numbs you to the bone in the summer even. what seriously pisses me off is recreational divers grave-robbing from the Fitz, other deepwater wrecks!! i was a founding member of SHIPS, and early supporter of the Wreck Museum...but some divers don't give a rats ass that they're desecrating a tomb...
@@kennethcrane9848 im pretty sure its in like 500ft of water if not deeper.. its so cold i dont think people would go down there.. im sure pressure and cold is a gaint factor.
Travis Walsh From the testimony from the captain of the Arthur Anderson following her he didnt think so either. The Anderson was hit by 2 giant 50 ft waves and damn near went down but she was not taking on water like the EDMUND FITZGERALD was so she remained boyant whereas the fitzgerald was very low in the water due to already being overloaded with ore and the water coming in.After the waves passed he wstched then heading for the EF and figured she had 10 minutes till they hit her.just about 10 minutes later the EF vanished from his radar screen without a distress call.He figured she went down so fast the crew had no chance to even send one or ready life boats.
I guess they didn’t have weather satellites in 1975. Oh, wait, they DID. I reckon Carl from Caddyshack was the navigator, “I don’t think the heavy stuff will come down for while”.......

I'm going camping on Lake Superior. I'll be listening to this song. Rest in peace all 29 men
I’m in Duluth right now- she crashed right by whitefish point across the lake. So sad

I guess ya wrote it because it seemed appropriate at the time. 😉
I still think of them every November 10th. This song is beautiful and haunting, just like Superior herself. May they all rest in peace.
Went to the Great Lakes last September.... So Beautiful... Loved this song at the Shipwreck museum near Paradise, MI.

Excellent video...thank you so much for sharing it with us...i surely appreciate it...means alot to me...
Hauntingly beautiful and Very sad throughout the entire Video and song. Godspeed to all 29 crew members as your Souls can finally rest 🙏.

The boats stern was completely flipped over and practically crushed so they probably died while being knocked out and drowned
went to high school with the third mate Michael Armagost in Ely, Mn. He was such a nice guy, so handsome. all the girls had a crush on him.
may her crew, crew another bulk carrier up there in the Great Lakes of Heaven. And on eternally smooth and clear waters.
Great Tribute and this song never gets old! May their souls rest forever in Peace!

If the reality of the loss and the haunting melody melded perfectly with this video doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you should search your soul...
Bury a child then get back to me on what makes you shed a tear and what doesn't.

"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn minutes to hours". Good Lord.

No one can write this type of song anymore. Thank you Gordon Lightfoot. The crew will never be forgotten thanks to you.
Lake Superior sleeps most of the time, but when she wakes up, watch out. She will take you and your soul, forever.
The first song verse should have been:The Captain saw the weather report and didn't go out,and the boat and crew waited for better weather!
