Hey, Runehammer! I am a recently converted program! I love your TTRPG theory videos. They made me stand back and reassess how to DM my games. I too like fast-paced, action-pack game running. I've been running through your catalog like crazy. Your experience in the TTRPG lifestyle comes out through and through, plus your energy is electrifying. The DM & RPG philosophy you epouse seems well reasoned and battle-tested. Been hungry for more of your content.

I think my actionable takeaway from this maknframe for my Sunday Night game is to streamline the math for ease of play
The dungeon has many concepts because it leans on previous locales in a finale blitz. Every Monster group in different combinations.
Seeing as how that’s alot of variation, I can boil down a lot of the special math that made more sense when you were in the solo miniboss but when 3 come at once we needn’t juggle reference so much math. I can boil them all to 1 attack, 1 AOE/special thing and naybe 1 cool movement/trait that makes nods back instead of their original Binder’s worth of specific mechanics which, while it was fun to brainstorm up, will be taxing to run/track when intermixed with other badasses.

Hey Hank, I agree with your points that there's way too much advice on how to be a good DM and it hasn't seemed to help.
This podcast in 4 years old and just as true today as it was when you first made it.
Having said that, I also feel like you're right, we all should be going out and practicing what we preach, one table at a time. By being the guy who helps that new player to shine, or the guy who says "are we really going to open our books and look up a rule? We're here to have fun, not practice Law."
    Change starts at the table.

It’s a tough balance. Sometimes looking up the rules can establish the ease or severity of a challenge if you just don’t know how reasonable the attempt is. I have fond memories of big Hail Mary’s and I don’t think I’d remember them if they weren’t embedded in the rules. Rolling a 20 is good. Rolling a 20 when 19 isn’t enough is great. Rolling a 20 when the rules called for it, the rules said 19 wasn’t enough, and you stuck to the letter of the law and entrusted your fate to the dice is LEGENDARY.
But I hate rules lawyers. Seeking guidance from the rulebooks isn’t the same as being forced to follow them.

YES! Making sure everyone get a turn no matter what's going on is a big thing at my table too - I run turns in Initiative Order for Combat, Marching Order (front of the group to back) for Exploration and Table Order for anything else, including conversations.

20:00 It's one of my my biggest problem with DnD/ttrpgs. I have that problem. I notice others have that problem. And almost no one talks about it.
I used to watch DnD twitch streams just to see how many others had this problem, and turned out it was common.
Good on you for mentioning it.

When you talked about the 80s, one thing that struck me is that I haven’t ever really seen anyone use the “caller” role which was supposed to be essential. I think this role grew out of experience and I wonder how well it fixes these issues

Ive been playing D&D since 1974. And I contend those loud mouth attention mongers are NEEDED. When I shine the spot lite on those quiet players, frequently get DECISION PARALAYSIS. That will consume so much time it will kill your game just the same.

Amen to that. Demanding participation is often wasteful. How many times are you in business meetings and found yourself going crazy with people being called on that have nothing to add?
