I don't think the judges of the Queen Elizabeth got it wrong, but then, Hadelich wasn't among his competitors, nor Zuckerman, Hahn, or Mutter. My own opinion is that Ray needs violin-playing to be more about the music and less about Ray. There are relatively few touring soloists that I would describe that way, but another is Sarah Chang. Ray needs a new handsome young star to come along and knock him off of his social-media pedestal so that he can focus on the music. I do adore his Vitali Chaconne video though.
Hadelich plays and sounds more natural. With Chen playing, I’d say: “this is hard to play”. With Hadelich playing, I’d say: anyone can play this” (what obviously is not true). In other words, shows better control.
Interesting opinion, but i would personally say hadelich’s interpretation is way too robotic/linear. Some may prefer the extra clarity over creativity, but in this case ray doesnt seem to struggle as much as everyone is saying he is. As a plus he does do the staccato as written for that one run
@@58Barroco I don't think that statement is something to laugh at, particularly with some of his recent performances, whether of Tchaikovsky or one of the most difficult pieces, the Ligeti concerto. Maybe Vengerov and Hillary Hahn would be two of the best for clean sound, but on really demanding pieces, Hadelich is there although I would say he has done better than this performance
Augustin Hadelich is my favorite violinist. You can clearly hear every note, tone is beautiful, and he plays like he is delighted at the beautiful sounds he is making; this is what every violinist should strive for.
In this comparison, both of them played the piece very well. However, I think Chen's recent recordings of him playing this piece have shown that he has become more reckless with his bow arm, which leads to him crunching and scratching the sound a lot more than he used to. Hadelich, on the other hand, has, in my opinion, gotten better and better over the last couple of years. I think Hadelich has also been a lot more consistent with his masterful playing, whereas Chen has been on a technical (some would also say musical) decline. I don't really have a preference for this particular comparison, but in general, I think Hadelich probably plays this caprice better than Chen. Both are still fantastic players nonetheless!
Hadelich -- he sounds like one of the early 20th century celebrity virtuosos. He has what I can only call an aristocratic negligence about him, where he looks like he's just whipping the piece out crisp as a pleated bunk before breakfast.
An interesting comparison. Ive always been a huge fan of Hadelich and in general i prefer his playing. However, i like ray chen’s phrasing a little more. Hadelich’s tone and clarity are beyond approach but Chen’s phrasing makes a little more musical sense to my ear. I also think i might like Chen’s up bow staccato more than Hadelich’s (which kind of seems shocking). Hard to compare these two, they are drastically different players
You can tell that Ray always has interpretation at the top of mind... He's probably forming an emotional story based on the music and trying to convert that to us lol
I love Ray's version. There is something nice about a little dirtiness in the playing, especially in virtuosic passages. Too clean can make a fiery piece sound boring. 🤷🏾♀️
Hmmmmm I didn’t see it that way at first, but I get it, what you are saying makes sense, as I was wondering why Ray has been playing “dirtier” in the past year or so, and is not like he is loosing it because he is more than capable to play it cleanly but he chooses not to. I gotta admit, I’m curious to hear Hilary Hahn tackle the same piece…
I will say this was definitely true of Oistrakh... Many times he was so dirty what is playing at loose on the verge of being downright reckless and out of control... Great way to describe it, ray also usually nails the interpretation for me so I can at least feel something from the music... Augustin sounds like he's playing in a sterile lab each note clean and clear and accurate (and the white labcoat-like suit doesn't hurt lol), I'm sure that's that they both were going for and kudos to both
Yes, there is no one best of … I feel Ray’s energy more than Hadelich’s pure sound, incisive but delicate. So different, so nice both in their way. Music is rich and the way to feel it for Us too is different. One thing: sure Hadelich control is quite better for me! Checking out a video by Ray interview with Hadelich
both are great in their own way. I feel ray have very deep emotion and character showed strongly in his sound production. Yet Hadelich is very sensitive in sound clarity and perfection, very delicate tone. personally my emotion love Ray's musical expression
First of all, two are different players, Hadelich is a monster, so musical he makes really technical phrases into music, I must say Hadelich’s strength is spiccato his timing is just unreal and so even, however to my taste he tends to play everything very percussive, and that’s his style which adds more energy, Hilary Hahn can play spiccato very well but her bow control in connecting the notes for me is the best after Heifetz. Chen is a player that is growing on me, he started out as a competition player, but he really challenges himself, there’s no better one comparing these 2 clips, just different so people with different taste start to divide opinions. Chen also has improved a lot over the years in terms of phrasing and I went through conservatory study playing the violin, trust me when Ray Chen published his wineiawski violin concerto (the less known one but crazy difficult) for me that is quite a statement, not only he pulled it off, like all the great violinists he was able to phrase it to suit musical palete so it doesn’t sound robotic. And I guess due to social media, I don’t think he wants to prove anything to anyone but social media kind of exposes all the amazing virtuosos online that it’s inevitable to compare. If I’m a virtuoso violinist I would find inspiration in other playing as well, and improve my technique or reinvent myself, as this new generation is about reinventing through micro phrasing, in a very detailed way, I find it quite different compared to the old school.
I liked the darker tone Chen made in this piece, it's like hearing beautiful bird songs from a distance deep in the dense forest in early morning. Sounds natural and sweet. Hadelich's is brighter and he articulates everything neatly, everything is so spot on, only I don't seem to like such quality for this part, sounds more like a hectic morning rush (apology, my childlike imagination😅). But they are all both great musician with wellmaintained skills. Kudos to both! 😊
Both are excellent readings… tone qualities are different, though… Hadelich’s tends to be sweeter on crescendos and diminuendos. Chen tends toward a warmer and broader tone for contrasting dynamic levels… happy to hear BOTH of them…!❤️
Hadelich is just so much better compared to Ray here. The notes are clearer and more precise and the phrasing stands out. It sounds like Ray is scratching around feeling for the notes on the difficult passages.

yes, the audio catches more ressonance from Hadelich, and it's more dry on Ray Chen. so the ressonance can make the sound clearer. but i bet chen's violin is resonating as well, the mic just didn't catch that.
Ray for to my ears and hearing thats personal preference. When a musician gets to that level they all their destinict ways of playing whatever instrament they may play, as with any really good craftman if they are outstanding like these two professionals they have their own way of grabbing your attention thats what makes them different , some love what they do like Ray.
Wow, ray is great with lots of passion in his playong styles. AUGUSTIN is truly a master...the tones are so clear on every notes...my ears are delighted!!!
Honestly, I like both for different reasons. They don't even want to achieve the same thing with this piece, which is what makes both worthwhile. I think I'm not wrong to say, I felt more things with Chen, and I chuckled more with Hadelich
They're both an inspirations to any violinist in the whole word. Their heart and soul are violin. They're both amazing but have different approach. I love the aggressiveness of Ray and a more refined play of Augustine. Ray Chen innovative approach to music, incorporating new techniques and interpretations that surely captivate audiences and keep classical music relevant in modern times.
Exceptionnels tous les deux. Magnifiques ! Extraordinaire travail ! Hadelich est le laser à qui rien n'échappe. Tout est si parfait. Alors que Ray Chen carresse, respire, et fait entendre la douceur malgré le rythme effréné. Tout est parfait 🌷 Vraiment fascinants tous les deux.
as much as I love Ray chen, there's a clear difference in tone when compared to Augustin. Augustins tone is just so much more clearer, vibrant, energetic, and so on.
Both are phenomenal, Augustin is a crisp whirlwind, while Ray is plaufully melodic, comparison of purist vs free,...my mood will determine who i prefer but both bring delight 😊
hadelichs playing it safe? Its not like ray was playing risky, he was just playing messier. Less reliance on rubato like hadelich was playing is far less safe. I get what u mean tho. Playing messier makes a piece sound more impressive and technically challenging. If u look for that then yea I see ur point
Mr hadelich makes boring and heavy classical music sounds relatable to commoner people like me. He makes it musical and more accessible to untrained ears like mine. I've listened to other virtuoso, I sometimes can't digest their performances, I tend to skip and think it's boring at times. But with Mr Hadelich, it's all lovely and beautiful ❤
@@megenberg8 our own personal experience may differ from person to person. And that is what I feel, take Brahms concerto for instance. When I listened to other violinists, I took the number as heavy and boring. But I dont know, when I listened to hadelich's version, I fell in love with it. But ofc, this is a very personal opinion.
Ray is a wonderful up and comer- give him time to mature and grow. Hadelich has been doing this for longer I believe. With all the faith and respect in the world offered to Ray, Augustin has such spotless technique that 100 percent of the performance is musically centered. I feel some tension coming from Ray, subtle, but at these super high levels of performance minute differences in touch make a lot of difference, kind of a musical equivalent to Olympic runners losing a spot on the podium due to 10ths of a second. Just goes to show that there is never ever a point where one should abandon intentional, patient practice of fundamentals. Always look for ways to be more efficient, mechanically advantageous, clean, all this led by an artistic rather than a technical vision. Young musicians tend to think "I want to be able to play anything!" Seasoned artists think "I want to be able to play this in any way I can imagine."
Hadelich, the violinist that resembles the most my favorite violinist ever Fritz Kreisler. Hadelich is musically in a different dimension (playing, arranging, composing even teaching), there’s no point of comparison, tho glad to live in an era in which it’s possible to enjoy them both.
That's tough!.... But on this one I'll personally go for Ray Chen because of his darker intensity and heaviness in his playing. Augustin's is sooo crystal clear tho.....beautiful playing of course.
Both are even here. Ray continues to improve over the years. Augustin can be argued to be the top player on Earth. Both players play magnificent Paganini.
People often confuse intensity with technical difficulty. Ray’s portrayal of the visceral sensations intended by the composer led some to believe the piece was hard for him. However, the reality is, both Hadelich and Ray are technically unburdened. Some music is simply not meant to be “sweet” or “relaxed”.
Hadelichs bow work is just so TIGHT its astonishing how much bow control he has! I prefer Hadelich but Ray really gave more direction with phrasing just by adding some heavier notes here and there. Both world class musicians and definitely a perfect example of how different one can interpret phrasing!
Absolutely no disrespect to Ray, he is an incredible violinist. But Hadelich is at another level when talking about his technique and ability. He has so much more nuance in his playing, and this can easily be seen in this video. I think this all has to do with his right bow arm and how little tension he Carrie’s but just how much control he has over every tiny muscle in his arm. He is in complete control over every part of his arm, from his shoulder to the tips of his fingers. It’s really quite incredible, which is why he is one of the greatest violinists alive. Not to mention his incredibly unique interpretations and his flawless left hand technique (how does he make fast passages and shifts look so easy!!). Chen on the other hand looks like he is using a lot more force when he plays in general, and this is his playing style and his own personality coming through, but it is also a sign of his weaknesses as a player. He does not have the level of control or nuance in his playing as Hadelich and this is apparent by this video. But then again, it’s like we’re comparing Gods to each other, they’re all great in their own way and have their own appeal. Chen and Hadelich are both incredible violinists. Thoughts?
Hadelich does indeed have next level bowing but I kinda agree with a former violin teacher of mine who said that he often seems too safe. I think he is technically objectively better than ray right now but, having seen Hadelich play twice now (at the proms this year and last year playing elgar and tchaikovsky), I do wish he would take more risks. I think ray on the other hand is almost more exciting because he seems to be pushing his own comfort zone when he plays a passage like this. It's not nearly as clean but it feels like there is more energy for me. This being said, mr Hadelich is still one of my all time favourite players and I've never heard a more beautiful tone live (I've seen vengerov, ehnes, bomsori to name a few)
Character of Performance ,Superb🌹Making each note count ,puts Augustin in class of his own,The violin can’t wait for him to touch it, His bow dances to an incredible speed, but no step is lost🔥Brilliant Definition Breathtakingly Beautiful 🔥
Yes, Hadelich is very clean. The problem is that he sacrifices tempo for it on the string crossings. No tempo = no moving force or power. I've noticed he does this a lot. Especially with his Brahms. Can't get into it.
Masterful performances but my ears couldn't handle even whilst being partially deaf. I'd like to hear an edit of both removing/softening the high frequencies.

yes, the audio catches more ressonance from Hadelich, and it's more dry on Ray Chen. so the ressonance can make the sound clearer. but i bet chen's violin is resonating as well, the mic just didn't catch that.
I like them both! They have a magnificence playing!
Beautiful!!!!!❤❤❤❤They are both amazing. but Augustin has a great violin.
Both are extremely talented violinists, but also very different.i personally prefer hadelich's playing but ray chen's humor
Tout est parfait 🌷
Vraiment fascinants tous les deux.
as much as I love Ray chen, there's a clear difference in tone when compared to Augustin. Augustins tone is just so much more clearer, vibrant, energetic, and so on.
I love how it says ‘which do you prefer’ instead of ‘who is better’
Hadelich Absolutely! He shows the noble musicality and let you feel effortless.
Hadelich is beyond the level! He is star quality and fun to watch!
He also plays everything! I mean EVERYTHING!!
Both are phenomenal, Augustin is a crisp whirlwind, while Ray is plaufully melodic, comparison of purist vs free,...my mood will determine who i prefer but both bring delight 😊
To me, Ray made this piece shine as an impressive work of art with his unique interpretation, where Augustin’s was just playing smooth and safe.
hadelichs playing it safe? Its not like ray was playing risky, he was just playing messier. Less reliance on rubato like hadelich was playing is far less safe. I get what u mean tho. Playing messier makes a piece sound more impressive and technically challenging. If u look for that then yea I see ur point
Mr hadelich makes boring and heavy classical music sounds relatable to commoner people like me. He makes it musical and more accessible to untrained ears like mine. I've listened to other virtuoso, I sometimes can't digest their performances, I tend to skip and think it's boring at times. But with Mr Hadelich, it's all lovely and beautiful ❤
because it is.
Look, I love Ray Chen, but Augustin Hadelich is some kind of violin god.
I lied. Augustin played it better.
Hadelich ❤️
Hadelich: his musicality, bow control, phrasing and articulation are off the charts.
The needless to mention name second guy plays really well.
I like them both because every violinist has their own and unique style of playing.
Both are really good!
Augustin, every day!
I would like to listen gentleman in white shirt. But simply both are extraordinary 🙏🏾
Very different sounds. We are lucky to have both
Augustin! Perfect quality ❤
He shows not himself, but the composer!
Yes, Chen has gotten lax and a bit too much the showman.
Ray Chen. You have to watch both performances (21st caprice of Paganini). Chen's is heartbreakingly beautiful.
Augustin clear tones😊❤
Hadelichs bow work is just so TIGHT its astonishing how much bow control he has! I prefer Hadelich but Ray really gave more direction with phrasing just by adding some heavier notes here and there. Both world class musicians and definitely a perfect example of how different one can interpret phrasing!
Different but both are excellent performers!
I like both! Need to add Kerson Leong to the comparison
There is no one like Hadelich. I can’t believe what I’m hearing when I listen to him play.
Love em both… but Augustin is the best violinist alive
Лучше артикуляция у Augustin.❤
Thoughts?
You sound like an expert 😂
@@adambe1126 You also sound like an expert.
@@Classical-Inspiration Nah, just an enthusiast.
Agreed. Ray has other focus now.
Augustin . So smooth and clear.
Aug didn't even break a swear 🤌
Two very different characters, I couldn't pick a favourite they both won this one ❤❤❤ both are super humans 😂 both are just amazing ❤️
Both are excellent violinists
Amazing both.
Team Augustine
👇
Character of Performance ,Superb🌹Making each note count ,puts Augustin in class of his own,The violin can’t wait for him to touch it, His bow dances to an incredible speed, but no step is lost🔥Brilliant Definition
Breathtakingly Beautiful 🔥
Handelich all the way. He has such a clean sound each note is on point
Both are great no doubt
Yes, Hadelich is very clean. The problem is that he sacrifices tempo for it on the string crossings. No tempo = no moving force or power. I've noticed he does this a lot. Especially with his Brahms. Can't get into it.
Hadelich was definitely more cleaner but I thought chen gave some structure or body to the piece.
I can’t decide.
Hadelich.. no doubt
Both good but love Ray Chen's version
I'll so go with Ray. Love his technique. ❤
Masterful performances but my ears couldn't handle even whilst being partially deaf. I'd like to hear an edit of both removing/softening the high frequencies.
I like Hadelich's shaping of his phrases more. Ray's crisp bite to the notes is nice though.
One sounds of struggle with something to prove...the other, clear, crisp with joyful flow.
Molto bravi entrambi, ma Hadelich ha qualcosa di magico!❤❤❤
Ray Chen uallll soltou o sentimento nas corsas sem vularizar para ficar mais facil😮 show !!! 👏👏👏👏✨💐🇧🇷
Majestuosos bravo
Hadelich overall, though Ray knows right where to put the best accents for pronounced effect :)
