These old books on dusty shelves
have warmed my heart and soul,
And take me back to better times
when men were brave and bold.
Old faces hanging on my wall

and push me on to cuddle up

Keeps his books nice and neat, arranged in order, knows which books are where. Not cool to take over daughter's room with his collection, but everything is in its place and he seems to know just what he has in his collection. It's not like piles of books messily all over the place scattered on the floor like uncontrolled hoarders do. My husband and I are big readers and prefer to own our own books over the limited public library offerings, but every few months or at least a couple of times a year we "weed out" any seldom-read or never re-read books on our shelves, or anything we've just lost interest in, and get them into a box (es) to donate to the thrift store or library used book sale if friends do not want them. We regularly purchase new and used books in our interest range but don't want to be overwhelmed with clutter or items we would "never be able to get around to eventually reading," so can honestly say we've read all the many books in our home, and there are books in every room but kitchen, bathroom and basement, but all on shelves & arranged by subject or our own personal specification of category. I am of the opinion that when books fill the attic, basement, and garage, there are too many books to keep track of and to prvent from mildew, grime and mold.

I've just purchased 2 medieval rooms in Italy, near my overflowing villa & art-gallery, to further decant masses of my books & to prepare even more space for further purchases. The builders are rapidly working on room 2, with the 1st finished except for internal doors. My living room is fit for a minor Renaissance prince, as I collect art, carpets ETC but I'm seriously looking forward to decorating the new rooms, with fitted bookcases, carpets, desks, paintings and objects. I've written a vast illustrated volume which is still ongoing & 50+ years in the making: hopefully some of it can be placed in display cabinets, because books especially are IT.

Not to sound judgmental, and there could certainly be worse obsessions that one could have, but this inspires me NOT to be like him. I am often tempted to collect books that I don't even feel personally motivated to read, and I end up not only wasting time hunting down books and making giant lists of books I might consider buying in the future, but eventually I might end up buying some of them (and not end up reading them). I realize this is a purely materialistic desire that will never be satisfied. It is a treadmill. The way to cut it off is to cut off access to online stores. This is why I want to stay away from the internet as much as possible. I think I should just live in the woods at this point.

They are better than nothing. But there is no such thing as a "digital book". It's an oxymoron.

I hope the basement, garage, and attic have climate control. I volunteer for the Red Cross Book Fair in Bloomington, IN, and people sometimes give us books that have clearly been in a garage or basement: dirt, bugs, mouse droppings. Thankfully most donations are OK. Recently in the area for recyclables I found a 1930 Shakespeare & Co. copy of "Ulysses". Whew! close call!

A couple of years ago I started reading "the classics" and I was really disappointed. I learned that it's best to stop wasting time reading a book that you're not really into. I'm okay with not completing a book. Time is a precious commodity and I will not waste it on books that I don't like. There are some classics that I really do like but I will stop taking people's recommendations from now on.

I don't understand the B & N connection here but nonetheless I like this video, after watching a lot of horrible book collecting videos here.

I wondered myself. David Irving once said that the only true work of Hitler's biography, untouched and "unmassaged" can be found at Barnes and Nobles.
