If you have 150 yards to the green and you need a 7 iron blade to reach it but with a strong lofted Iron you only need a 9 Iron the debate about launch angle is kind of moot.
Currently uses the Callaway Rogue ST MAX OS Irons and because I typically hit my Irons Higher than Normal I actually get pretty good stopping Power. Don't get bunch back spin but typically with 7 Iron Par 3 150 Yards my ball hits and maybe rolls 3 to 5 feet after it lands..
Good test. I have a pretty slow swing speed so like the stronger lofts. I switched a few months ago to Tour Edge E722 irons (7I is 27.5) and so far like how they help my game.
It's all about how your golf ball performs into greens. If you are rolling over more than 3 or 4 greens a round, it's time to get a golf ball with more spin or golf shafts with more spin or higher launching irons. I swapped out my golf ball and switched to higher launching irons and have played the best golf of my life.
OEMs sell you a set with jacked lofts which mean the 3 and 4 irons are virtually unplayable for the average player. Then they sell you a 3 and 4 hybrid. A modern game improvement 3 iron has the loft of a 1 iron from the 60s
I think this video eludes to when an intermediate player can upgrade to players clubs. That is, when the stronger lofts leads to lower trajectory and low spin with pronounced runout unable to hold green because the strike is improving due to proper compression and decreased dynamic loft.
Timely video. Absolutely loved the Paradym X, but could not get pin up. Distance, however, was absolutely amazing and where I wanted to be. Ended up adjusting the loft to be 1 degree weaker on the Paradym X, but was tempted to match them to the Paradym's.
I love these comparisons at different swing speeds. Assuming no one cares what number is stamped on the club, the question is how YOUR 150 yd club behaves. Find the club in each set that goes 150 yards, and compare their performance on all the other variables. Which set gives you more stopping power, control, forgiveness, accuracy to a 150 yard pin? If they are the same, then you can decide if you want more shorter clubs or longer clubs and pick it based on that. That is a comparison I'd rather see.
I just typed in a very similar question before seeing your post. I agree completely. If he’s carrying the Aerojet 205, or whatever it was, on average, then how does that compare to the player distance iron that also carries 205?
The manufacturers talk a lot about how they're doing other stuff to the technology of the game improvement irons so that they can be lower lofted but still launch in the same window as the traditional irons. This video seems to disprove that. Is the Aerojet 7i just a 5i stamped with a 7 on the bottom? Would the MB 5i give you similar launch/spin numbers? That's a test that would be interesting: GI iron + blade iron at the same loft, what are the differences. Nice video!
Very good point. It will be interesting to see how the MB 6i would compare to the Aerojet 8i. In theory the Aeroject should launch higher as the CG should be located lower.
I went from wilson fg tour blades to taylormade p790 irons which are 3 degrees on average stronger, basically I play the same, but where I hit a 7 before, I use an 8 now. No big deal, just know my distances is what it comes down to.
How does the MB 7 iron compare to the Aerojet 8 or 9 iron, something with more comparable carry numbers? Typically a longer hitting club is going to roll out more, so it’s no surprise the Aerojet rolled out much farther, but what’s the difference between similar carry clubs from the two types of clubs. Is it simply a matter of Cobra (and others) calling their game improvement 7-iron a 7-iron when it’s really a 5-iron?
Hj Thomas. Good to see you on utbe again. I am facing the same problem but with being a fair bit than u I have lost some swing speed and flexabilty. Would having the bent 2% flatter help or would i better getting some of more modern irons that have more lit. Cheers Brian. From one kiwi to another. Great presentation.😊
What you're saying is that distance is not always king, especially "total" distance. You need to consider other factors for the right clubs for you and your swing. If your buddy is hitting it farther than you, it may be because he has jacked up lofts, not because he's a better or faster swing. Cheers.
So really the GI irons are just ego nonsense (look how far I hit my 7 iron! Which is really a 4 or 5). If you can't stop it on the green it's pointless. The best clubs for most amateurs (and some pros) are probably the 'players distance' irons, which incorporate the distance technology with enough spin to stay on the green.
Question... So based on that data, if I'm playing with Game improvement irons, similar swing speed, without flipping, and good compression. Should I anticipate a similar launch angle?
Just ordered a set of PING I230... I had the P790 (Gen. 1)... really not sure between the strong option or the regular one as I came from a quite strong loft set??? I will see!!!
You are looking about a 2.5* difference (in 7iron) from 30.5* with the P790 and 33* with the i230. You will hit the i230 higher with more spin. - Thomas
Game improvement iron distance is like measuring your pecker with the first inch or two of the the tape measure cut off. It gives you a feeling of reassurance but really your 7 iron is a 5 iron. They also have hot faces, so the results will vary wildly, especially on finesse shots.

Great video with much needed information, thanks.

Awesome video guys
Instead of comparing iron #, which model is best to carry 150 yards for mid to high handicappers?
May I suggest a hybrid for a minimum of 150 yard carry with a slower swing speed while keeping that steep decent angle?

Except you need less club to reach green which should mitigate the launch angle issues.

Ewcellent video, would like to see with slower speed 60-70mph.

If the loft of clubs vary from set to set, then what makes a 7 iron a 7 iron?
I would have liked to have seen the flip type swing with your usual 90 swing speed + aurojet irons. Great insight though

Don't ask your buddy what he hit. Know your game and play it. Problem solved.

Worst thing about strong lofts means you need to load your bag with wedges

If your hitting 20 yards further then you could hit a 9 iron and get same distance as the blad 7 iron.😮
