Hey this might be kind of random but if you're wanting to better understand your anxiety I'd recommend Thomas Sanders' Sanders Sides series. It's basically him talking issues out with four aspects of his personality, one of which is Anxiety. The series did a lot to help me recognize what my anxiety as a protective function as opposed to an antagonistic one and does a lot to promote mental health as a whole. It's also not super heavy on visuals so it's great to put on in the background while working on your projects!

I just started watching the video (at 7:15 now) but I paused it to leave this comment in case I forget later. I'm so glad you're talking about mental health and maybe seeing a professional this year! I think people often feel like there's gotta be something "seriously wrong" with them before they look for mental help, even though they go to see a doctor for something physical much more easily. Looking for mental help should definitely be seen as something more normal and natural in my opinion, so I'm glad you're mentioning it! It may encourage people who want to look for help but feel like their case is not "severe enough" (which is bullshit). Good luck with everything! Continuing the video now, sorry for the rant
EDIT: I just finished the video, everything turned out so lovely! Awesome job Angela

You're so right. I was exactly the same. I waited until i had a physical problem, something to point at and say 'this is why I feel so sad/crap/upset', even though I'd definitely been depressed for YEARS by then.
To be honest, part of that was due to the fact that when I first reached out to a psychologist after several things had happened in my life one after the other, and I was struggling, and really felt that something was wrong, I was told that basically, life sucks sometimes and that I should just 'get over it'. So, the 20 year old me decided that I must be over reacting, a silly little girl, and ended up having a breakdown. It still angers me, that initial reaction from a supposedly trained professional, but I now have an absolutely amazing psych, and she and my GP really listen to me. And sure, I have medication to help with my depression/ anxiety/PTSD, but I also have medication for my asthma, and for my auto immune condition, and for my blood pressure. There really should be no difference in how we treat mental health to physical health.
I do truly believe that this separation is changing, however S L O W L Y that change is happening, but we're getting there.

Vicki Noeske One of the reasons why my mother is so good at treating anxiety is because she suffered from anxiety as a child late 70’s onwards. She found relief in the form of swimming because the endorphins made her feel better. Though my aunt always is telling my mom how good of a mother she is by the fact that I get over things quicker than she did at that age. I am lucky because up until the 90’s psych drugs were really only forms of sedatives given to patients in hospital. I grew up with dozens of anxiety, depression, and adhd drugs are on the market to help me. My mother is a pediatrician who is known to receive teens who struggle with mental health. She likes to brag about what I have over come to give other parents hope. Some times I will wear my sports sweatshirts which have my last name on the back and people will come up and ask me if my name is Lauren and I’m Dr. Arigo’s daughter and it’s creepy they start asking about my dog and my classes.

Please please please don't feel ashamed about your anxiety. I struggle with it myself and just recently stumbled on a thought that might be of use to you too. The hidden advantage of being someone who leans on the anxious is you're likely (and you clearly are) a person who is more easily able to empathize with people, you are able to work in a quick pace and juggle several thoughts at the same time. As someone whose brain is always "on", I tend to notice people with anxiety are more creative and open to new ideas in general. So by no means is our anxiety a one-sided equation though my goodness how often it feels this way. God bless you!

I think there's a real gap in the RUclips 'scene' for simple, vintage sewing tutorials that one can follow at home without a pattern. Things like making a circle skirt from scratch or a teacosy, things that we can really follow along to! Those might be the sorts of videos you could make on low energy/poor mental health weeks. I know I'd love and use them!

I loved every moment of this video. I love that you are honest about the struggles with making the garments (and with life). The finished garments are so attractive with your figure. Those shirt sleeves, with their volume, really enhanced your hourglass. It definitely made the added volume in the skirt look intentional. If you don't want to invest the time to make other shirts, then consider making separate collars. Independent collars we're still a fashion item in the mid-century woman's wardrobe. I have one from that time period that is beaded with faux pearls, but that would be a bit more for evening wear. Collars don't require long hours of work, especially when you won't have to fit them to the body of a garment. They can be made using scraps. They can be plain or decorated with lace, piping, embroidery, or beads. They can be straight forward or whimsical. (You have a wonderful sense for whimsy!) So, consider it food for thought.

Hello Angela ! I'm turning 21 years old this year, so we're probably around the same age, therefore I'm not the best person to give you advices on how to live your life, but I can tell you this : I've always been a stressfull person, but it went complety unmanageable six years ago. I suffered from depression, and stayed in my bedroom for months. It took me years to be able to spend an entire day without ever feeling stressed at one point. Now, I'm feeling much better, but there is still a lot of things that makes me anxious (sometimes silly things for others, but for me, it's a big deal). Actually I'm currently in one of those bad days... It also took me years to be able to talk about it, and it helped a lot. I'm impressed by your courage, and you should never apologize for talking about your mental health. It makes feel better to know that I'm not the only one in this situation :)
I find out that creating things with my hands (sewing, embroideries, knitting...) helped me out, and are among the things that kept me going even though I coudn't see me out of this dark place I was in. The advice I can give you, it's to take your time. Do things your rythm if you can. It's okay if people our age are doing things that we wished we could do : don't force yourself, wait until your ready or you wont feel well. I know it's not always possible, but I try to do it as mush as I can, and it helps.
(I'm sorry if my english is terrible, I'm french !).

Our mental health is some serious business. I’m a crafter of all sorts. I have depression and ADHD. I have struggled for the last several years remaining motivated. Some of my projects take 200+ hours of work. I deal with a lot of chronic pain also. I think folks who are artistically inclined tend toward bouts of low motivation. I keep notebooks and write down ideas and then research techniques or source photos and that tends to be the part I don’t like. I also get discouraged if something doesn’t work out how I wanted and then will have to put it down and walk away for awhile. You do such beautiful work. Do whatever you can and don’t stress over what everyone else wants from you. Do what makes you happy. Also, sometimes just saying out loud that you are struggling helps. Trying to keep a lid on those emotions can make the struggle even harder. ❤️

No one can perfectly match plaid/tartan stripes on waistbands. Kiltmakers don't even attempt it. That you got one stripe to line up on the vest is impressive.

I am someone with horrible anxiety too. I was diagnosed when I was nine and a lot of it has to do with my ocd. My mother is a doctor so she got me on medication but it has been a long road and up until recently swim meets weren’t fun because I would sit there and panic the whole time. Though it also helped that I found my event. I am a distance swimmer which is supprising because I had a panic attack the first time I swam it and inhaled water on a turn, but I went to sectionals for it and came to love it. The fight against anxiety is something that takes years and a lot of people to help you. If talking about it helps you like it helped me. I say talk about it as much as you need.

Thank you for talking about your mental wellness challenges. It takes courage to risk being vulnerable. I’m a mental health case manager and I strongly believe in using a large variety of professional support including therapy (in any form.) I would also say that 2018 was a year of intense astrological upheaval. You May not be into that but the amount of eclipses we had last year impacted a lot of people. Which is to say you are very much not alone. And if it helps to know, your channel is part of my self-care, copying mechanism plan. Be kind to yourself and congrats on reaching out for support. 😊

Your comment about Instagram and how it causes you anxiety comparing yourself to others so you avoided it, but the anxiety didn't go away struck a chord with me. I enjoyed the casual chit-chat of this video. Thanks for sharing.

This video is what I needed, your calm - even if unsteady at times - voice, something to look at as in something getting done/made and someone putting into words what I had in mind for the last month. I struggled with making the cut between realizing something and actually committing to a change, it's overwhelming and scary to the point that I postponed it for months or in one case a year. Hearing you voice your struggles, being open about them and the way you find loopholes/solutions for them is calming my nerves. And it means I can find solutions too if I keep looking. Thank you Angela.

I’m glad you’re focusing on your mental health! People don’t realize that even when you’re chasing your dreams, you have hard days/weeks/months where you doubt yourself and feel unmotivated and directionless. I find that taking care of my physical health and living/working environment helps keep my mental health in check too. There are some days where making the bed and getting my hair and teeth brushed are accomplishments lol.

Also, I loved when you had weekly vlogs about all the projects you were working on, and then a finished product video dedicated to one specific project when it was done. I feel like that’s kind of best of both worlds: regular content, but you don’t have to worry about cranking out a big project in less than a week. I’ll admit I get way more excited about the unique, elaborate historical costumes, even though the mid century stuff is still cool.

When I was pregnant with my eldest daughter I made a waistcoat in fabric like this. I loved it!! I altered a pattern to make it longer to fit over my bump, I covered buttons, I lined it, worked so so hard on it so I could wear it on Christmas Day. I had sewn clothes before but this was the most complicated, and also the best finished thing I’d ever done. ☺️
By Christmas Day my bump had grown too big to button the waistcoat up 😭 Lol. I loved it tho 😍

I loved this! The pink blouse with the red made this fun and flirty instead of the typical white. The hat really was the cherry on top of the sundae! ...and don't worry about stress or depression, it's just a part of the over all process of people who are movers and shakers. We all just grow through it and make little adjustments here and there. Thank you for helping to add cheer to all of our lives Angela!

Girl, same. I have anxiety too. I take buspirone. It makes me really sleepy though, so I try to only take it when I'm feeling particularly anxious. It's ok to be anxious and the fact that you realize it's not your fault is a step in the right direction. I'm very fortunate in that my husband has a really good job. That makes it so I can be pretty stress free. I don't have a job, so I take care of our dogs, sew, and do things that are calming, like watching your videos. :)

Depression/anxiety is no laughing matter and definitely not something to be ashamed of. I had to get a nervous breakdown to finally admit I needed help, and I so wish I’d gone before. I hope you feel better soon! You’re such an inspiration and it’s because of you that I finally found the courage to start sewing my own garments 🖤

Angela, the outfit is LOVELY. Don’t be afraid or anxious about not meeting your New Year’s goals consistently. Nobody does that, LOL. Just keep going...take it one day at a time. Getting the help you need is the most important step, and you’ve already done that! (I’ve been there, and done that). As far as exercising, (which I loathe), try a keto diet and intermittent fasting. I’ve lost 25 lbs in 4 months, with NO exercise. Not a gimmick, not a joke, and no fancy supplements! Blessings!

Hi Angela, I think you are amazing. I was probably very much like you as a child. I was obsessed with historical fashion and constantly sketching clothing designs, dreaming of being a costume or fashion designer. But I grew up and got ordinary office jobs and at the age of 52 I am still an advanced beginner sewist at best. It makes me very happy to see you pursuing your passion. Work on what you enjoy, not what you think your followers might want, because you can never please everybody. Also, this outfit is gorgeous!

I've struggled with chronic anxiety and depression for most of my life and even though it's definitely still something that I deal with every day, it's gotten much easier to manage over the last few years. I'm really proud of you for thinking about seeking some help in dealing with this because it's so worth it - you are so worth it. I'm sending so much love your way. The fabric is so cheerful and fun. I will be on quest to hunt down a similar vest pattern. It is exactly the type I need to sew a riding vest with boning for bosom and back support. The vest needs a high neck an full upper body coverage (minus the arms) and capable of a zippper closure.

I haven't watched all of the video yet, as I'm just getting into your discussion about mental health (which is very important), but as you were talking about your uploading schedule, I thought maybe I'd have a suggestion. You've probably already thought about it, and it may have been suggested a million times, but maybe not! I believe that if you were to do weekly vlogs and post them say, Sundays, or whatever day works best for you, it would allow you to put out content while also working more extensively on your projects. Not for us, perse, but so that you enjoy them more and can dabble with more elaborate projects while also giving us content. Personally, I hope that you are able to feel better this year and come to a place you are happy with, and for that, I can wait longer for your wonderful content :). Also, sorry if this is really wordy and comma-y!
Another also, I went to check out your Patreon to see if I can afford to contribute (because I'm in college, and so I feel extra poor) and it's down for maintenance, of course. I'll try to remember to check back later on it!

Lovely video as always. I've stopped taking new years resolutions because I realized it caused a lot of resentment when 3 weeks in I'd already "failed". The introspection that comes with coming up with new years resolutions is valid and oftentimes very positive but I feel it's more gentle to leave it at that. A list of things you could do to improve your life/health... Not necessarily resolutions. Maybe having on your wall a list of things that would help you and doing them when it's convenient or possible is easier and healthier. E.g. "I enjoy my creative space more when it is tidy" "exercing gives me a rush of adrenaline" "using my accounting software consistently will cause less anxiety on tax day"

Thank you so much for speaking about your struggle with mental health. So many people struggle with it (myself included) and there is nothing to be embarrassed about. So glad to hear you are seeking help to deal with those issues. Please know that you are loved and appreciated and that you bring a lot of joy to those of us who watch your videos.
Also on the resolution front, it sounds like you may have tried to change too much at once. You may have more success if you pick one goal at a time and work on it for a month or so and then add in another one. You don’t need to change everything all at once. You’ve got time. :)

Angela, thank you so much for sharing. I've gone through a similar experience in 2016/17 in terms of disappointing experiences and continuing to struggle. It can be hugely life altering. I've found your whole outlook can change but focusing on the positive you've learned about yourself and allowing yourself to heal is important. I have to say, I'm not sure I've mastered it but I will say, knowing someone as talented as you also struggles, makes me feel a bit less alone in it all.
Thank you for sharing your talent!

I totally feel you about the rash during exercise! I had to stop running a few years ago, as it was getting so bad that I was crying from the burn of my skin mid-run... Now I have a pretty regular yoga practice which causes no pain/rash. I think you just have to find your activity!
