  • Video tutorial on how to replace the light bulb located in the heater, ventilation, and air conditioning control switches/panel in a VW MK4 Golf, Jetta, Bora, or Beetle. There is only one bulb that lights up the whole panel and there is no need to remove the panel for replacement. This particular tutorial was done on a 2004 Volkswagen Golf TDI.

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -replacement bulb is #2721
    -pliers
    -electrical tape or a cloth
    -needle nose pliers
    Procedure:
    -ensure the vehicle is off and the lights are not on
    -taking your pliers, wrap the tip in electrical tape
    -if you do not have electrical tape, then wrap the plastic fan speed knot in a cloth
    -carefully remove the climate control panel's fan switch knob by pulling straight out using the pliers
    -sometimes you maybe able to use your hands, but a majority of the time it fits very tight into place
    -once removed, you then have direct access to the bulb
    -using needle noise pliers with electrical tape on the jaws or a small hose, carefully remove the bulb in the center located where the knob was
    -remember the bulb is fragile so don't break it
    -the replacement bulb is #2721
    -once removed, you can now install the new bulb
    -when reinstalling the new knob, ensure the contacts are in the correct position and touching
    -test the light to ensure it's working correctly
    -now reinstall the knob

    Same here.
    Two years in the dark... until I saw this video a few days ago. Ordered the bulb online and it arrived today and in a couple of minutes I had lights again!!!
    My bulb was pretty tight, but the needle nosed pliers with a bit of tape was a great idea.
    Thanks!!! :)

    I found this video by accident while trying to find some other DIY Jetta tips. Followed the directions and now I can see the dials for the first time in almost 5 years. In fact, the whole process only took under 2 minutes was faster than the time it took the parts counter at the dealership to find the bulb! Thanks so much for this video.

    This made it VERY clear that some one was trying to take advantage of me not knowing what it took to fix. Thank you.
    Said that the whole dash must be removed to do it.

    Excellent DIY! after months of driving at night without any HVAC control lights, I followed this DIY and replaced the bulb on my 2005 Jetta in only 3 minutes. The bulb on my MKIV Jetta was a 12v 1.2 watt. Autozone has the bulb (part # 2721LL)

    Great video. Needed to know for sure that the fan knob was removed just by pulling.
    Not to be critical, but as a suggestion, avoid touching small clear light bulbs (flashlight, headlight, halogen work light, this bulb) with your hands/fingers. The oil from your hands will absorb heat from the filament and can cause the glass to warp and crack.
    Thank you for providing the video. Have fun with your Golf!

  • @yake3459
    @yake3459 4 года назад

    This worked for me. I was a bit worried because my Golf is now almost 20 years old and everything (esp. plastic etc) is close to breaking. I wasn't able to pull für bulb out first so i used doublesided tape on my pliers to give it some more grip. After that it came out rather easy. A hint from my exerience is to wiggle the "knob" at the start a bit, that way you don't need that much force to get it out.
    This way it is much easier than the methode where you need to remove the whole control panel.
    Good luck you guys.
    Thank you for the Video (7 years Later xD). Very very helpful.

    Thx for the tip, for those who might want to switch to LED, the bulb is 12v @ 1.2w with a T5 wedge type connector. I found a pack of blue LED bulbs on Amzn to match the instrument cluster for the same price as a #2721 replacement bulb.

    It's just the one bulb that lights up the whole hvac control panel. As for the red ring around the 12 volt input, I've never had it apparent personally, but I would imagine there is a bulb also used in that unit too.

    It's just a standard incandescent bulb... It's not like the halogen style bulbs found in your headlights which will burn out from the oil on your skin if it gets in contact with the glass.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  12 лет назад

    @Corkoth55 The only way I can think of removing the left over bulb is taking a very small screw driver and slowly pry along side the bulb base and work it out. Or if the wire filament is still there, then you might be able to grab onto it with pliers and pull it out.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  12 лет назад

    I actually had spares kicking around, but you should be able to buy this from a local auto parts store such as APC, Car Quest, Parts Source, etc. An electronics supply should also carry this bulb.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  11 лет назад

    I've never had any issues myself, but I have heard of others having that problem. So that could be the possible cause unless there is an internal electronic problem with the hvac controls themselves rather than the switch or there is a short in the wiring.

  • @4DIYers
    @4DIYers  12 лет назад

    This was actually the very first vehicle I've ever experienced with it having the bulb located under the knob. I would imagine that Toyota has it located directly behind the hvac panel, so you will most likely have to remove the panel itself to gain access to the bulb.

    A piece of small rubber tubing that fits tightly over the bulb does the trick. Cut a small piece, stick it on the bulb, then use needle nose pliers to grab the hose enclosed bulb. Use a longer piece with the bulb stuck in the end to insert the bulb. After the bulb is in, twist the hose to remove the hose.

    It is a light bulb, which is accessed by removing the ashtray, then removing the screw or two under where the ashtray was. Then the front of the assembly will push down and forward toward the engine about an inch and then you can remove it. At this point you can access the plug for the power point and unplug it. The light bulb is in a little plastic holder on the side of the power point. Insallation is reverse of removal. Good Luck!

    Done this with my VW Beetle, bulb working but fan not.... Just to mention if you extract the dial when it is on 2 rather than 0 it wont spring the fan contact out of place and the fan won't work. A lesson learnt the hard way by myself which led to the whole unit being taken apart and the contact being put back in the right place.

    The bulb for the 12V (I assume you mean the one by the ashtray) is not too bad, but not as simple as the HVAC bulb. Not enough characters here to write instructions; I suggest searching in a forum such as VW Vortex, where somebody has surely asked the question before. :)

    There's no need for needle nose pliers. If you take out all the knobs and face you can use a pick or small flat head screwdriver.. at the corners. There's like small clips. You "unclip those" and the whole thing comes apart. Them you can just use your fingers to pull the bulb. Use a clean rag or paper towel if you don't wanna touch the bulb. I just did it myself.
