- Plastic model kits often need finishing work to make the models look as good as their source material. This week, Kayte and Norm take on the task of painting a Space Battleship Yamato 2199 snap fit kit, using washes and rust effects to make the spaceship look old and battle-worn. The result is a striking transformation!

I mean, everyone has said it, but sprue nubs and mold lines! little extra time on that would elevate it so much.
Also I'm surprised we didn't talk about weathering pigments and pigment fixer.
Those of us who were children in the 1970's (Adam and I are about the same age) will remember this as "The Argo" from "Starblazers". If you were a fan of science-fiction, there was very little good sci-fi on TV to satisfy that hunger. The Japanese anime "Space Battleship Yamato" was dumbed down a bit for the US market and targeted for kids. The name of the ship was changed just in case it might offend some grandparents, although the real Yamato's role in WWII was largely insignificant. Even in the US version, the characters refer to the remains of the original ship as the Yamato in the early episodes when it's sitting intact on the bottom of the dried up Pacific ocean. In reality, the ship ripped itself apart as it sank, much like the Titanic, and is barely recognizable.
For many of us, Starblazers was our first introduction to anime and holds a special place in our hearts. The show (and the subsequent movies) are often described as the Japanese equivalent of Star Trek in the US. However, as the original name implies, the ship was always the star of the show.
Did you ever see the Japanese film from a few years ago called "Yamato"? I call it "Titanic with Machine Guns"- basically the same setup- a woman (granddaughter) hires a fishing boat to go to the site of the Yamato so she can throw in a flower or something. Spending more time cleaning off the connection points from the piece to it's sprew(tree, frame) goes a long way.

Sorry, but I’ve been building models for over 55 years now. I would never claim to be an expert but my main modelling interest is sci-fi and WWll/present day naval vessels. Saying all that, the video was informative but I need to offer some friendly critiques.
On the fictional side, I have built something from all genres. From, some kit-bashed subjects to regular kits of Worlds Collide, Star Trek-Wars, BSG, Macross, Gundam, Thunderbirds, etc.... and of course, Starblazers/BS-Yamato (in its different iterations) so I’ve done my share of weathered and battle damaged subjects.
I know newer Bandai kits are designed so that you don’t have to paint, especially if you really don’t want to - but a scale like this can certainly use lots of highlights with silver and gun metal. Also, it’s designed to be put together without glue for most parts but there were seams there that should have been sanded and glued for a better hull - overall parts fit.
On the paint side, washes are best but the rust was still a bit thick for that scale. I know this because some of my early 1:700 scale ships don’t have that much rusting and they have too much on them. If you are showing that much advanced rusting, do some damage to the hull and guns to go along with it. Depending on the subject and scale, a lot of rusting is done with a dry brush technique in any event.
Finally, after doing all that weathering, spray a coat of mat finish on it. It will keep all your dusting (and any decals) in place and prevent any smudges of any of that work that you did - basic finishing process.
You have more patience than me. It just upsets me too much. These kits are designed for young people! They manage to make them properly! I wish I could make something with you. I might actually learn something.
Love the addition of Kayte on the channel, and some more showcasing of model work. Would like to have seen a little more attention to detail with cleaning the sprues and a better finish by priming and basecoating the plastic before weathering. This would be really cool as a "one day build" type video starting with the assembly with voiceover timelapse video or something. Anyway, love to see more of this stuff on the channel, keep it up guys!
Dudes- the Yamato sat at the bottom of the pacific for decades before it was "raised" and refitted to be a space ship. The rust wasn't form a hypothetical intergalactic junkyard.

I do mostly figure kits of old movie monsters along with custom bases, but I learn things from all kinds of videos, from train set enthusiasts to DND model structures.

@@TR_TenSeven God Hands don't magically eliminate the need for sanding down nubs. to get that flat surface you still need to sand things down and make them look uniform. The point of the nippers is to get closer to the model and get a cleaner cut so you don't have to cut away excess gate material, thereby eliminating a small intermediary step. Btw that step would be cleaning away part of the gate with a precision blade or with nippers again, but now without the worry about stressing the plastic.

Yeah, no matter how well the paint work turns out they won't be able to hide the fact that the kit was popped off the sprues and stuck together. Lazy!

Yeah, she is def pulling her punches. You can tell she wants to correct and explain her knowledge but she is too polite.
People in the comments griping about the parts not being trimmed and cleaned properly - why? Tested isn't a modeling-specific channel, and Norm isn't an expert builder. Plus, he's free to build it however he wants. There's no *wrong* way to build a kit. Frankly, I'm just happy to see model building promoted on such a prominent channel. I remember a time where practically every town had its own hobby shop, and you could get cheap kits in the pharmacy or local department store, and the big toy stores all had a good modeling section. That's not likely to ever be the case again, but the more younger folks pick up the hobby, that only going to benefit all of us.
I think it's because cleaning up the sprue points is a basic model making skill. Also, Norm just did a review of the Dragon sprue cutters with the specific purpose of properly cutting and cleaning up the sprue points. I agree with you that having more people picking up the hobby is certainly a good thing. But the purpose of these videos is to show how to be better at building models and cleaning up your sprue points is a basic model building skill.
Dude, there's not an expert and there is this. It is just sloppy and lazy and incompetent. No young person sees this and think it looks cool they think, oh look it looks like a shitty mcdonalds toy that got dropped in a urinal and shat on and clicks off.
I believe the idea for the episode was to show how the basically finished model could be improved with weathering. Many people appear to have missed this rather obvious point.
I've been building kits since 1971 at age 6 and learned a lot over the years. I built my first studio model used for a lower budgeted production in 1984 with lights and fiber optics. I'm still learning new things all the time. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that the creators on RUclips never read this stuff so there ya go.
You should see how I painted my 1/500 Yamato from my channel. I painted mine as well as putting on LED lights for the wave motion gun in the front of the ship. I am glad to see you guys make this kit even better the before!

I watched the original anime in 1979 called Our Star Blazers. My favorite anime and I was super sad it only ran for 1 season.

@@JSLeeds No, the issue is that even to amature model builders, most of what she did was just wrong. For God's sake, she didn't suggest clear coating the rust weathering, which is what you're supposed to do, and instead said to not touch it. I guess the first time you dust it you'll have to re weather it.

Awesome! I watched this cartoon when I was a kid. The space ship was built from an old WWII sunken battleship. Kate is super talented. I'd love to see more videos featuring her. :)

I have the regular model of this (not the snaptite one), has LEDs etc etc, fantastic model. This ship was super iconic for me since I used to watch Star Blazers as a kid, my introduction into anime when I was 7 back in the 70s
I so much want to get back into model building now that we can have communities like this. In my day, my first computer at 20 years old was a VIC 20, we didn't have the interwebs. I had to read books and magazines. :)

I recommend using coffee filters to wipe up when you do a wash - it doesn't leave behind lint.

I've been using ground up chalk for grit. I've also seen some make their own "chalk" from dried up paint to mix their own colors
I ,Japanese kind moved because Yamato is kind symbol of WW2 (at least to me) and now we use? Yamato (this is from Animation but concept is from Yamato actual battle ship) as peaceful way. I lost my grandpa last week.
Really hope this peace last forever.

I have the 1/1000 Bandai Yamato kit, plus a lot of the other SBY ships in the same scale. Someday, I'll get around to building them for a display.
I personally would've put more rust around the anchors (always one of the rustiest parts of a ship), and some blackening around the ends of the barrels... but great job overall, and nice to know about the cinnamon trick.

As I recall the Space Battleship Yamato was actually the refitted Japanese Battleship Yamato so yes it would have seen water.

I personally wouldve primed the gray and hit the red bits with a flat so all the sheen was gone before weathering, this to me wouldve done the most to give the sense of scale. Perhaps only leaving some of the original gloss showing through on the rounded surfaces and light-facing or upward surfaces.
The cinnamon rust was so awesome to see! I use it all the time in my cosplay props, especially in my Fallout stuff.

That's definitely a 1/500 scale. I have a 1/1000 scale Yamato and that looks twice as big as mine...

It’s a very good kit.
As a Gunpla modeler, those nub marks are like scraping bottlecaps on a blackboard.
And this has been pointed out by so many. Yet, as fellow modelers ourselves, we're to learn from them for the techniques and inspirations that we may have yet to come by.
And that, I think is our greatest take from this video.
for those of us in the know, it was a trans-atmospheric combat spacecraft which saw a lot of action. so, washes such as grime, and rust make sense. also, i heartily agree the viewers suggestions concerning the nubs and the use of pastels or pigments to vary the grays and grime tones along the ship. muzzle blast around the guns--the exhaust stack isn't an exhaust stack at all--it was a missile bay and there were missile banks along the sides of the hull plus fore and aft torpedo bays. metalizer paints and tones for the huge exhaust nozzle and the bottom ones. clear paints (such as tamiya clear green or blue) for the clear parts and finally to really get rid of the toy-like appearance of the bare plastic--just prime and paint over everything like one viewer suggested. i saw on the web that there are brass barrels for all of the guns--i think they might be worth buying to take this ship to the next level. it's a nice kit by bandai that's for sure. :-)
i forgot to say that some editions of this kit come with lighting.
All I have to do is see the Yamato, and the theme enters my mind.

The anime story is that the WWII Yamato was refitted into a spaceship, so the rust makes sense.
Both in the original and remake, she can actually still function as a naval battleship. Bonus for the remake for enabling her to fire conventional artillery.

In the remake the space battleship was disguised as the wreck but wasn't actually the ww2 ship.
This is because the actual ship blew in half so it was more accurate.

In a psychological sense Space Battleship Yamato is a highly nationalistic fantasy of the re-emergence of Japanese dominance that was quelled by the outcome of WWII. The Yamato was the last, best hope for the Japanese to turn the tide of the war, it was the "game-changer" that didn't change anything. The idea that the Yamato would be literally raised form the dead to defend not only Japan- but the Earth- I'll leave to your interpretation.

You can totally get away with rust and all other weathering you might find on a seagoing battleship, and you could incorporate the kind of weathering you would put on desert military vehicles. The starship was made by converting the real-life WWII era Japanese Navy battleship Yamato into a spaceship (fun fact, the real Yamato class battleships still hold the record as the largest battleships ever). When they did this in the show, they were rushing to get it done because they had to get to the distant planet Iscandar and back to Earth in under one year or the Earth would become inhabitable. So they took a sunken battleship that had spent decades at the bottom of the Pacific ocean which later became a desert due to Gamilon bombing, and turned it into a spaceship as rapidly as possible. It is VERY believable that there would be surface rust, salt deposits, maybe even barnacles still left on the hull, as well as possible sand blasting and sun fading - maybe even right next to shiny new plating where structural damage had to be repaired...? The possibilities are endless here.

I haven’t seen “Space Battleship Yamato 2199” but I know that model reminded me of “Star Blazers” from 1979 then I looked them up on IMDB. Puzzle solved.
Yeah, Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is just a modern retelling of the original series from 1974. It's worth a watch imo.
The original space battleship Yamato is better than Starblazers, and IMO better than 2199. 2199 isn't bad but they make the characters generic anime tropes and add a lot of unnecessary things.
Space battleship Yamato was the original title when released in Japan in the 70's. When the show was brought to the US market it was renamed to Star Blazers. On the US version the show was dubbed in English, the Name of the Yamato was changed to Argo, and a few other scenes were altered / deleted for the US market.

A few drops of dish soap in your water will let the wash flow into low points easier without the need for alcohol
How much water to paint to soap should one use?
@@cleverusername9369 depends how dark you want your wash, make wash to desired pigmentation and add a few drops of soap, it's not an exact science

Also, Norm, please know the material behind the model. That is a new take on an old cartoon in the us called star blazers in the 70's. The ships was originally buried beneath an dried up ocean on earth which is why it looks so weathered.

If you want finer grit instead of cinnamon use diatomaceous earth it's a light tan or white powder. Can be found in most hardware stores or ordered. Nice tips and work.

You can buy pre-made rust paint that is insanely realistic. I saw an example of it in practise at a model show and I could have sworn that it was a rusty piece of steel.
Oh that cinnamon trick is going in my playbook.
This is obviously made for the absolute beginner. If it inspires a person to go out to the hobby shop and get a model kit i'll ignore that they slapped the kit together without any prep work. I never thought to put tamiya paint in a spray bottle with water and alcohol or to use cinnamon. Basically using the cinnamon as a dry pigment. There are a ton of tutorials on youtube on how to weather your models. If your looking for someone who is an absolute MASTER at weathering I highly suggest going over to Plasmo Plastics youtube channel. The dude is an absolute artist!

Now, I've been thinking... would it be wise to sand blast the model a little bit to make it less smooth? I'm guessing that would make it look less like a miniature.
Sand blasting is used on steel or similar material. It's too destructive even for aluminum surfaces. So it would destroy your model. Maybe a very fine grit sandpaper works.

You should have added some blacks to the ends/inside of the main exhaust port and turret barrels as well. Blackened the tips of all those small turrets on the sides as well.

The battleship Yamato sank in 1945 and wasn't refitted as a spaceship until 250 years later, so there might be some rust. It's also a model based on an animated fictional story, put some potted plants and a swingset on there too if you think it looks cool.
Not quite. At least in the reboot, the shell of the original Yamato was used to camouflage the construction of the space battleship, but none of the original steel was used.

@@JeffPDX1 Sure sure. Nevermind that the reboot makes more sense (the original Yamato broke in half when it sank) and steel wouldn't be worth a damn after 250 years in salt water... Instead of fixing a glaring hole in the story, they're just "wrong".
Nice. I'd have left a couple of panels pristine, like new replacements, and maybe a few with red oxide undercoat where it's taken a hit and had a temporary repair.
It was the Battleship Yamato formerly on the ocean bottom but the Earth ravaged by attacks from the planet Gamelon have destroyed the Earth and the ship was burried in the dirt (formerly the Pacific Ocean). The ship was refitted to be a space battleship hidden from the Gamelon forces until it escapes Earths orbit to go on a one year journey to save Earth. I used to love this show as it was on in the afternoon when I was in HS in the late 70s. So much better than the crap on American animated shows.
