When the film hit the cinemas I was in the german navy, as torpedo specialist on S190/U11, located in Kiel/Germany. This submarine is now located in Burgstaaken/Fehmarn as a museum. Go visit!

YOU saw the mechanic and realized that someone has to step in, and that person would be YOU. The fact that you caught the incident means that you thought about it. THAT is a luxury circumstances won't often allow. Generally... you simply react. I am confident that YOU, seeing the circumstance, would do what is required. I knew guys like that...no medals, no glory..smiply a job to be done. I think you would be like them. Just to review the circumstance you referred to. The mechanic did, finally, get it together. Klaus Doldinger sei herzlich gedankt für seine großartigen Filmmusiken wie diese. Erst durch die Musik wird eine kinematografische Darstellung emotional verstehbar, was Klaus Doldinger immer brillant gelang.

Ich höre diesen Track immer und immer wieder,die Geiger leisten ganze Arbeit unf sind der Höhe Punkt. Ich habe Tränen in den den Augen und eine fette Gänsehaut. So muss Filmmusik sein,emotionen wecken,und der Film muss im Innern Auge abgespielt werden.
Ist dir jemals aufgefallen, dass die Geiger mit ihrem rhytmischen auf und ab den Klang eines Dieselmotors imitieren? Dies wird zusätzlich unterstützt von den Snare Drums, die den Klang von Ventilen nachahmen. Außerdem finde ich die Wahl von Jagdhörnern gerade bei Konvoi so passend.
Great movie and great music. The three most memorable scenes are the skirmishing of the boat against the storm, the encounter with the other German submarine and the passage through the Strait of Gibraltar. Also the moment of the torpedo attack on the convoy. A very tragic finale, showing the futility of war, despite the unceasing heroic efforts and will of those involved in it.I think this is the best and most impactful movie about military submarines made to date. All similar ones after it are far below the level of the German film.Its authors: screenwriter, director, composer of the musical motive and acting team have done a great job.
Ich habe diesen Film 25 Mal gesehen, die Bücher gelesen, diverse Fassungen verglichen und höre heute immer noch die Musik, wenn ich die Augen schließe.
I have watched this film in one summer night on TV without knowing that I was watching the one of the greatest legend submarine movie. This movie is showing the pressures of crews in limited space and emotions of battle in realistic way. If you didn't watched this one yet, do not miss this masterpiece of human film history. OST also very great and always reminds me the smells of battle.
if you can find the 6 hour 'TV' version, it's even more emotive, ..much of the 'extra' content is much longer, much more harrowing depth charging scenes, each of which go on and on and on and on etc for upto 20 - 40 mins at a time!!. Boom, creak, boom, boom, a sudden leak springs open, then another, and another, then a maddened rush of furtive action to stem them all before an indomitable quiet can resume, only to be shattereed yet again by anouther salvo of charges going off, the ensuing panicked chaos of repairs begins agains, again again,.. ...et al ad infinitum. ..they really express the reason why the Johan the Mechanic/Engine-Master snaps after a longer than usual depth -charge attack, as the boat protests under the percussive & concussive forces rattling around the boat, than the shortenws film length version depicts.

Der Mann war sicher alles andere als ein pazifistischer Träumer, aber eben auch nicht mehr gerade von der Marine begeistert nach seinen Weltkriegserfahrungen 💁♀️ 💁♂️ Habe das nur geschrieben wegen Buchheims Video "Vom Untergang der U-Boote" (auf youtube zu sehen) wo er mehr oder weniger zu vestehen gibt er habe "das Boot" zur Abschreckung geschrieben, aber gleichzeitig auch zugibt sich nicht von der Faszination lösen zu können :D ich denke er wäre irritiert gewesen von deiner Entscheidung, hätte es aber dennoch im Herzen nachvollziehen können.
Das Boot ist einer meiner Lieblingsfilmen. Der Sound und Soundtrack ist einfach nur genial. Auch die Filmerische Darstellung ist genial und super. Ich sehe mir den Film / oder die Filme immer wieder gern an. Auch die Melodie / Melodien sind sehr gut und ich höre mir die sehr gerne die an. Manchmal könnte sich, ein moderner Film, eine Scheibe von diesem Film abschneiden. Es ist nicht alles Perfeckt, aber auch nicht schlecht. Es ist eine gesunde Mischung. Das ist etwas, was den heutigen (meistens) Filmen fehlt. Das Individuum (wir) sollte wieder im Vordergrund stehen. Wir haben die Möglichkeiten, das zu tun.
Großartige Musik zum wohl besten deutschen Film aller Zeiten. Die Stelle zwischen 4:14 bis 4:35 kann ich mir stundenlang anhören, im Film die Szene, als sich der Frachter als "scheiß Zerstörer" herausstellt. Gänsehaut pur!

also the rules of warfare do say that all things necessary to win will be allowed. By your logic the bombing of cities would also be a warcrime withe the difference of the merchants being armed an loaded with ammo, guns and fuel. Starving a country by sieging is a well known and recognized tactic but never before done in that measure.
Shooting merchants is in no way cowardly as its, like i said, a tactic of starvation to weaken the enemy which the allies did eith bombing cities!

The Kaleuns of the u boats actually never wanted to kill innocent people so much so that a few actually saved allied crewmen or directed them to the nearest shore. there is almost no record of a captain ever shooting on men in the water!
If you dig deeper into the topic you‘ll find that also the US NAVY subs shot japanese merchants and called out the unrestricted submarine war much earlier than the Kriegsmarine did.
Your view is very restricted and acrually mindless considering your nonexistent will to understand something but always believing what seems to be true but actually isn‘t that much.

"Eine Reise ans Ende des Verstandes". Ich liebe diese Szene wenn das U-Boot versunken wurde. Die gesamte Mannschaft musste ihr Bestes geben, um die Oberfläche wieder zu sehen. Eine schöne Metapher, um sich von Fehlern im Leben zu erholen.

1981.... a whole life and this soundtrack is still so fresh and good as the movie. Wonderful, watched it yesterday and it has aged so fucking well. Like good wine.

The first time I saw the movie was in 1984 when I was 8 years old. When I watched it again when I was 24, I thought it was a masterpiece and I always listened to the music before doing any important work. I remember the movie more for its music than its story. I am now 47 years old, but it takes me back to my childhood. I want to go
