    Garmin AERA 660 REVIEW Part One in my Aviat Husky tailwheel- -This is a comprehensive review of the Garmin Aera 660. this may be a bit long, but if you really are interested in this handheld, then you should watch on and enjoy. I am working on part two which will be from the air and with live streams!
    YOU CAN SEE AMAZON's Latest price here. I believe I paid about $849, but the unit is now about $749! A really great deal and I just became an amazon associate so i get a little kiss from Amazon if you buy it here - In either case, I am so happy this video has helped people!
    amzn.to/2MoTfJL
    This is a link to the Garmin GDL 50 Which provides the weather input to the unit and ADSB. I use a Garmin GDL 39, which also has AHRS for instrument back up -

    I post all kinds of fun videos flying around the Northeast!
    I am located in Manhattan and fly all over the Northeast and video the flights. Many of these video were simply created to keep a record of my flying as I transitioned from a Cirrus SR22 to a Husky A-1 - essentially going from a powerful nose wheel gear plane, to a powerful tail wheel plane! The two planes compliment each other extremely well and each have their own mission. I am no videographer, but have enjoyed learning imovie, and now Final Cut Pro as I make the videos better and better.
    Please feel free to comment and provide feed back and I do appreciate you visiting my channel! -- and of course subscribing!
    Also check out my current aviation project called www.sharemyairc...! Sharemyaircraft.com is working to solve the unbelievable inefficiency in general aviation aircraft utilization whereby the average pilot flies 3.3 hours/month with their plane sitting on the ground 96% of the time. There are very few pilots/planes that would not benefit by being SHARED in the meantime. !

    Since my last comment I’ve had my old Garmin GPSMap 496 replaced with an Aera 660 along with Garmin GDL82 and GDL50R for ADS-B. I absolutely love it! One of my favorite features is touching a frequency and having automatically populate in the standby frequency window of my Garmin SL40 com radio. I’ve owned Garmin for many years in auto, exercise and aviation. Garmin makes everything so intuitive.

    Thanks so much. You confirmed everything I was thinking about the device. I have a 421 with huge amounts of panel space (after putting in GTN 750 and EDM 960 and Aspen and opening up a ton of space). In fact, all that space seemed like a waste and I didn't want it to go unused (even though I also have an iPad mount as an "additional" screen with Foreflight and Garmin Pilot on it). I told the Avionics tech, "Put the 660 on the panel with the Airgizmos dash mount ($129 at Sportys). Will give me another screen for redundancy but also to do quick flight planning and interfacing with my other Garmin devices." He installed it (started testing it and other devices this week) and said "Geez this thing is faster and more responsive than all the other more expensive Garmin devices -- particularly with the GPS satellites. You're really going to like it." Then I found your video to confirm some of what I was already thinking. Anxious to see your Part 2 video. Thanks again!

    I thank you for your video, very useful! and there's no better video related to Aera 660 than yours.
    Some Questions about this device :
    - You say that you need GDL39 to get METAR. Can't you just fetch them thru shared connection with your Iphone? Because I don't want to invest in ADS-B (I don't need to).
    - I tried a lot of ways to do it, but I would like to add custom waypoints and some private fields to easier find them when I fly : is there a way to add custom waypoints/private fields-airports?
    Many thanks :-)

    Hey - Great video - really helpful. Would have like to see the Flightplan in action so to speak - how the FP is displayed and how to use it in air. I am thinking of getting the 660 to drive my AFS-5600 EFIS through the NMEA serial interface (export) on My RV-6. I am currently checking with Advanced Flight systems if they have any experience with the 660 - and if they know if the NMEA data is the same for the 660 as for the 430/650 which is supported by my EFIS. Thanks though for a great video - waiting in anticipation for part 2.

    I have my aera 660 hard wired in my Grumman and now my JPI Fuel Scan 450 will provide fuel burn to next GPS destination which was a pleasant surprise. I am looking at mount options for my Bellanca Champ after its restoration. I plan to place the 660 on a frame post using a RAM ball mount but looking at all options. What mounts are you using for your aera 660 and your iPhone?

    Is there a feature that allows you to enter aircraft performance or fuel consumption? I saw the tail number was added into the device. Thought maybe it was on the second page of the “Tool” page. Does it also show winds aloft?
    This looks like I could replace ForeFlight on my iPad with this device with everything it can do.

    Hello, great video thank you. I have a newbie question if you don't mind (I haven't even started my flight training yet-going for sport pilot): can I get all of the features you describe here just with this unit alone, or do I also need a transponder or ADSB? Some other type of hardware? If all I had was this unit and none of the other stuff, can you tell me what functions would then not be included? Appreciate any help, thanks.

    • @TailWheelsRock
      @TailWheelsRock  4 года назад

      You would need either a GDL39 (which i have) or some kind of other ADSB IN device - Now, you also need a ADSB out, but the plane you use has to have one as a mandate -- -- thanks for watching!

    • @eastbend99
      @eastbend99 4 года назад +1

      @@TailWheelsRock Ok great thank you I appreciate it, I am still just leaning about how this and that works on aircraft; I may have to add an ADSB in. As I understand however, the ADSB out wouldn't be needed in my plane for the certification I'm getting (sport pilot) or the area I fly in, which is pretty rural and away from any Class C airspace.

      Because the 760 was not around when I bought this. I would definitely get the 760 as a friend of mine has it. It’s beautiful large and has additional features. Don’t ask me what they are right now. I think it has to do with ifr charting.

    I just bought the GDL 50. Are you using the GDL 39 here? I can’t get weather on the ground like you are. I’ll be flying with it today for the first time. I was told I need to be about 500’ above the ground before it works with weather but you have it. Any info you can share about this? Thx do much

      I use the GDL39 -- works well - on the ground it is using the internet - make sure your unit is connected and make sure you go to menu and tell it to choose AUTO when it comes to weather - meaning internet or FISB
