  • Garmin's aera 760 is the latest in a long line of portable navigators and picks up where the previous aera 660 left off. In this video Aviation Consumer editor Larry Anglisano put the unit on the test bench and took it flying for a look.

      I have one as well as an Aera 660. Pros over an iPad: much brighter screen, doesn’t overheat, same touchscreen interface as Garmin GTN navigators. Fails: Only one BT connection. Doesn’t get ADS-B data from Foreflight Sentry. Resolution not as good as iPad. Database updates brutally slow.

      Just because she couldn’t give one doesn’t mean there aren’t any. iPads are fickle, large, and clunky to hold. They’re also not dedicated devices, putting you at the whim of apple’s software updates and other crap. I quite like the idea of a dedicated device, both hardware- and software-wise.

    Had every single iPad model produced , in my RV4 even, the 12.9, IPad Pro. No good in having great resolution if they are hopeless in sunlight. Bring out an iPad that can be seen in sunlight and doesn’t dim, when I’m 100 miles out to sea, will be a sure winner.

    The great thing about Garmin in my opinion is that they tend to just work and stay working, but they're somewhat behind the times compared to a modern ipad.

    I recently purchased Garmin aera 760 and mounted on my windshield.
    The AHRS is not stable. Slowly it is either showing a climb or decend.
    How to fix this.
    Thank you

    @4:50, they could have given it a good anti-glare screen with paper feel under a stylus. The iPad sucks in flight on both accounts. By the looks of the footage here, the Aera is no better.

      The iPad Pro and Mini are world class when it comes to low reflectivity at 1.8%.

    • @mattj65816
      @mattj65816 4 года назад +1

      @@andrewmorris3479 Great, but the glare off of an iPad mini sucks in a sunny cockpit, I fly with one at least a few times a week. I bet Garmin could do better in an aviation focused product.
      They could also come up with a product that is less prone to overheating. I don't expect Apple to do these things with the iPad because they are not important to the general public. But in an aviation focused product, there are improvements that somebody like Garmin could make to create a more compelling product versus the general purpose iPad.

    • @andrewmorris3479
      @andrewmorris3479 4 года назад

      Matt Jensen I agree, but the current iPads pack as much power as a desktop PC in a thin and light aluminum enclosure with no cooling fans to speak of. The iPad’s CPU is probably 5x faster than any Garmin portable in the market so what you can you expect in a 100 degree cockpit with direct sunlight? They are really two completely different products.

    • @andrewmorris3479
      @andrewmorris3479 4 года назад

      Matt Jensen Which iPad Mini are you using? Mini 4 and the new Mini have 1.8% reflectivity and 400 nits of brightness which is great for a portable device.

    • @mattj65816
      @mattj65816 4 года назад

      @@andrewmorris3479 for a portable general purpose device, yes. The iPads are great. For an aviation oriented device, as the Aera is, I bet improvements could be made to make it a more compelling device *in the aviation environment.*
      My primary iPad mini is the current model ("5.") My backup is a mini 4, which was my primary before the new one came out six months ago or whatever it was. They're great devices, I'm not saying they aren't, they just aren't aviation focused devices and they never will be. That leaves the door open for somebody like Garmin to produce something even better.
      They talk about how rugged the Aera is. I don't care about that. I've never dropped my iPad in (or out of?) a plane.

  • @jgpyne
    @jgpyne 4 года назад +2

    I agree with everyone else here. If the largest selling point is durability/ruggedness etc, I think I'll buy 4 iPad mini's and let my kids play with 3 of them while I use the one that "could" fail and confiscate one of the kids iPad's if that happens, lol.

    This was a glowing plug to keep Garmin happy. I liked the discrete references and comparisons to an Ipad. As much as a dislike Apple, I will be dumping my android tablet for an Ipad or perhaps two of them. Nice product but its a reminder of just how good an Ipad can be.

    A dedicated unit could be better than a tablet that might have other ideas but size, resolution, price works against it here and really, the instrument should be in the dash, not joining the rebels that are rebelling against their ridiculous certified prices. Can the bs distinction between certified and experimental and sell it at the experimental prices. Or lower. And get their heads in the game with screen resolution and size. Only in bizarre GA land is 10 inches a big screen that costs a lot of money. And if it helps certification, make a small backup unit part of the package such that it's predicated on a fall back, not deadly critical. A set of 2 or 3 units. And I get the impression that Garmin doesn't go through all that much for certification of these units because they are so complex and constantly changing with software that if they held them to any similar bureaucracy as the plane itself it would never get certified and cost a million. they might actually sell a lot more if the prices weren't so ridiculous.

    • @bp968

      I'm not a pilot at the moment, but I agree with you. I couldn't help but notice that this was 1600$ and the Garmin G3X touch 7" is like 2995$. Then I saw that the experimental was 3k but the certified was *8K$*! 10k for the 10.6". So in the experimental you could almost setup a dual display and the autopilot for less then the price of a single certified display?! No wonder we have planes and engines designed in the 60s still being made and sold for 300k!

      Because people in this thread are pitting the 760 against an iPad Mini. But this device doesn't compete against the iPad Mini. The target market for a 760 is the pilot looking to buy an iPad Mini + AHRS + ADSB. Like many products, it only competes favorably in its intended market, and doesn't make sense in another.
