VIDEO INTRODUCTION: If you want to learn how to beat a billion-dollar company then this episode is for you. because the story that I am about to tell you is the story of one of the smartest start-ups in the country!! The story that I am about to tell you is the story of a small company called Rapido that managed to break into the powerful duopoly market of Ola and Uber. and while a dozen bike taxi companies emerged and perished, while even OLA and Uber backed down after failing in this space, Rapido today stands as a dominating force in the exact same segment. This segment that I am talking about is the Bike taxi segment and Today Rapido is doing so well, that they do 4 Lakhs rides a day, have over 60,000 active riders, and have an app download from 25 Million customers!!!
    The question is,
How did Rapido manage to break into the big league of OLA and UBER?
While all other bike taxi companies failed, What was the business strategy that enabled them to crack this nonexistent market of India?
and most importantly, what are the business lessons that we need to learn from the Rapid rise of Rapido?

INTERESTING FACT :Nowadays ola n Uber drivers first find the customers through the app and then come for pickup and then cancel the ride on their own so that they don't have to pay the commission to the company n drivers tells us to pay amount quoted on the app while booking it ... I have experienced this for almost 8 times now 😂

I am a student and I worked as a part tym rapido captain for 2 months in Mysuru city. I'm sharing my opinions.
1.(For customers)When I was riding , two customers said that they met with an accident and insurance were never able to claim even after 2 to 3 months and the rapido were not supporting. Then the captain will be responsible for the accident and he has to face the customer. Life is more important than the money. If u want to ride ,then ride on your own risk as the company don't provide any insurance as of my experience as a captain.
    2. (For the captains and future captains) The company is illigal as they don't have permission in Karnataka . The company will say that we have permission from RTO. But when I asked Officers in RTO they said that they haven't given any permission to Rapido and the bikes will be siezed if any one(Mainly auto drivers) give complaint on them and will be fined 5 to 15k and driving licence will be cancelled. Get the information before u start as a captain personally.
    3. If u get caught by the auto drivers customer care is useless . Me and my colleagues got into this problems several times. My colleagues bikes were siezed as they got no support from the rapido . Some paid 5k fine and some of the bikes are still in the police station. So I don't say don't ride rapido. Ride on ur own risk.
    4. The salary package is different for different cities . The salary at Mysuru was good at the beginning. But after 2 weeks the weekly incentives were of no use because u get only 1 rupee for every ride. Means as a part time captain I used to work for 5 to 6 hours a day at peak hours. I got 8 to 12 rides without cancelling any rides. That means incentive is 8 to 12 Rs for one day. My rating was 4.65 out of 5. I used Honda shine. My daily earing was 400 to 500 including incentive . U need at least 150 to 200 Rs of petrol. That means my total earnings is between 250 to 350 for a day. U can only earn 7k to max 10k ( oil change and service charge not deducted)
    5. Some times there were no orders even u r at the demand area . U have to wait at least for 1 hour(one day I waited for almost 2 and half hour). This is because of compitition among rapido captains. More rapido captains are signing in as the rides are getting distributed. Some times pickup distance was more than the ride distance. This means waste of time and less profit.
    6. There r too many problems. I have listed some of the main ones. Helpline is the worst. There r some technical issues in the app. Some times u won't get pickup fare and distance fare. I questioned them behalf of my colleagues about some of the problems in the meeting and they couldn't even answer some questions.
As I questioned they neglected me and manipulated other captains also. They told we have the court order and there is no problem. So I asked them to send it in the group. It will be helpful for captains to get out of situations when we r in argument with auto drivers and police. They were so irritating as they even removed me from the what's app for asking them the court order. What's the problem showing court order if they have. Many of the captains are still dng rapido as they can't find alternative jobs.
This app mostly benifits the company and the costomers. Don't take it as a main source for ur income. Do it as a secondary income job.
So customers ur life is more important than ur money. And captains, before riding just think is it worth ur hard work. It's your decision. U r working for your commitments. Ride on ur own risk. Plzz do consider guys.
    Thank you

      Hmm pretty much everything true.
I would like to share an instance of my first and last rapido ride lol...
If you wanna cut short you can straight go to second para
1️⃣That day I was with my friends on a picnic type trip. We went to lot's of places and when the day came to an end it was 7:30pm already. I was on the bus stop but the next bus was in like 30 mins. My home was like 7 kms away and I had to get there asap. I checked Ola and Uber, the prices were Rs.350-400. I already spent a lot that day so I was in a cheap mood. I looked for ola and uber auto as it was significantly cheaper but it was not available. My friend suggested me to try rapido. I hesitated quite a bit at first but I finally installed the app and booked a Rapido for the first time in my life. And was I amazed, just Rs.56 for 7 kilometeres!! There was some first ride discount coupon applied unless the cost was 76rs approx. As from the app the captain was supposed to come in a Honda or something (it was a good model). Then he called me and arrived in a worn & torn CD110 ... I was like that's fine let's just trust the process. One other thing that stuck with me was that the number plate was different from the app too so that was probably not his bike for sure. The captain was a nice guy, we had a good conversation. The way to my home had a 2km highway flyover from where I started. He started speeding to 60-65kmph to which I felt a little uncomfortable for trusting a stranger on that speed. The conversation carried throughout the whole ride and after that flyover which was 40% of the journey he started to tell me about his problems etc.. how these apps paid them so less, how his friend with a private rental car earned a lot more than him etc..
2️⃣Then he went on like "Sir, You know they pay us so less that I cannot even afford to change the brakes. The tread/grip of the tires have been worn so much that it slips when it rains and he cannot afford a tire change."
I was like Ayoo Broo u literally giving me a heartattack 🥲
In the way he even showed me how his breaks don't stop the bike even after pressing the handles.
Then we reached my home I gave him hundred rupees. Later I just thought that nothing bad happened that night for gods sake or unless 60kmph accident on that flyover would have been the end of me. I took a bet on my life for Rs.56 rupees and pledged never to do it again.
I appreciate if you gave your time to read a small page from my life 😊
      ~Mohit

I would also like to add that apart from the legal issues that were cracked by Rapido, when ola and uber did dive into bike taxi format, they didn't have much of riders (because of their entry as "cab" services) which made the waiting periods longer and thus frustrating the customers. Well, with the same model, "Pathao" launched in Bangladesh in 2015. Though it was a massive success, they are now suffering from losses. It happened bcz of the riders. Bcz after several years, the riders stopped using the app and started hauling passengers like rickshaws or taxis. They used to stand beside crowded places and ask people whether they wanted to go or not. I think with this model, Rapido might end up like Pathao if they don't do anything to prevent the Captains from stopping using the app and asking people to go.

As per my experience in Hyderabad for past few months with different apps
For a ride when searched in 3 apps the rates for bike taxi were
    Ola 160
    Uber 180
    Rapido 210 .
Rapido charging 20-25% more than other apps.
Ola - less no of drivers
Ubers - 90% of rides cancelled by driver.
    Rapido - high rates (

@@phantom008varun4 I'm from Hyderabad. Ola and Uber started bike taxis long back here (at least 4 years ago). Now Ola stopped due to some legal issues but Uber still runs it. Although initially, I didn't use Rapido for long, it's been my go to app if I'm alone. The main reason being the availability - maybe because of the ease of part time stuff, there are plenty of captains always around and ride gets accepted much faster compared to Uber's cab, auto, bike whatever it maybe. And second thing is the payment mode change - I barely carry cash and try to do online payments which isn't something the drivers like. The stupid Uber app has the option to change after the ride starts but it never works. It's not the same for Rapido, I can always change until the captain presses end ride and they have a QR code that comes up which I can scan and pay and those people are happy about it.

back in 2013 when uber got very popular here in US, one of my friend who worked as developer for uber asked me to start something similar in India..at that time I told him the same thing that Uber is working here because here people's primary medium of travel is car and everybody has car. so they can utilize existing vehicle as taxi. In India same thing wont work because even thought lot of people have car, the primary medium to travel is two wheeler. People will have to buy car that they dont need if they want to be uber driver. plus average middle class or even most upper middle class indian would not waste 400-500 rs on taxi if we can go on their own two wheeler for 2 main reasons 1 saving money 2 avoiding delay due to traffic.

This is also a great example of "right place" when it comes to new venture. Bike taxies are not the first choice when you live in hotter part of India with relatively "sufficient" public transportation available - for e.g. Mumbai OR New Delhi. Enter Bengaluru - great weather, bikes can tackle traffic much more efficiently, convenience (and apetite for it among Bengaloreans) and finally cost of public and other existing transport medium.
Note that Uber and Ola share were doing great but there was sharp drop in supply (from driver's side)

In Rapido was launched its price for the ride were very affordable & I used it for my daily travels at the base price of 40₹ but since it has captured the market the price for the same ride is now 76₹ which is even high or equal to uber now
Few months back rapido introduced its ride price i.e a pass through which you can book ride with discount the price at that time was 20₹ for 10 rides and 40 for 20 now the price of same pass is 125 & 150 something. Now I don't think there is much difference in uber/ola bikes and Rapido)
These are some demerits of Rapido I think which can lead to it's downfall or customer preference to alternative.
Also problem is bike taxi is that helmet is shared among several people which may lead to transfer of hair problem like lice, dandruff etc. Someone should also come up by solving this problem))
