Thanks for the info. Was thinking about going with the more expensive unit thinking it would be better but after watching this I can see that they are practically the same. Thank you for saving me the extra money.
We are shopping Electric Fireplaces this month, here in Canada; and this video has cut right into the heart & soul of the two units that we were considering. Thank you so much for saving me the time & effort to "look under the hood"; in a quest to explain the extreme price difference.
I was able to fix the motor on my old technology fireplace by myself with a $10 motor bought on Amazon. I have no experience doing thus stuff, but I was happy the simplicity of the old technology made it possible for me to repair it on my kitchen table in 30 minutes. 😂
just like older cars, need a degree to change spark plugs nowadays.... Used to be if a motor went out, you could pull and reinstall a new motor in a matter of hours. For the heating element sure but sometimes simple is just better. Thx for the video
Love it! Enjoy seeing tear downs and how everything works. Would love to see this done with the vapor/ultrasonic transducer fireplaces. Those are really interesting with air flow, lighting (especially with double lighting strips for a broader range), and plumbing. Look forward to that!
Thank you for showing the inside of the device (the magic). Looks like the technology is identical, just better parts like the fans and flame visual effect. At the end it's heating coil with a fan (the $20 heater without the visual effect of the fireplace). I was expecting an LCD or LED in the new model, because I was thinking about using a TV and integrating a heating element from a $20 heater. That way the TV can be used at a TV and/or fireplace. The design is so simplistic that just about any copycat can replicate it.
Really helpful thank you. I purchased what I now know to be older technology.....still cost me £500. Broke after 13mths. I was told by retailers they are not designed to be repaired.... so had to throw it away. Total waste of money. I'm now going to buy a Dimplex ..new teck thanks to you.
Great review...Now I do understand the differences between basic and upscale models. While I think the built quality is higher for the more expensive models than the basic one, I am wondering if those differences warrant twice or thrice the price differences. Plate glass vs plastic sheet? stamped steel sheet vs nothing? blower fans vs computer type fans? reflector differences? The materials costs are not much between the two though. I guess it is a personal choice which one he likes and willing to pay for it...After all, these are all fake fireplaces....
but the profit margin on one is much MUCH better. it's not rocket science, it's called salesmanship. Making minior differences sound so much better when in fact all electric fire places are expensive to heat with and are for looks only.
I'm with you. While this guy points out differences I fail to see how they warrant such a huge jump in price. Lots of empty salesman talk, but objectively not much to go on.
@@denjhill I agree. It's all about marketing. The look between the "old technology " and new technology , I have to be honest, is not that much different.. actually it looks just as good. The price difference doesn't justify the cost.To justify the cost I have to take apart the whole thing to see what I paid for.
@@highsiderider We recently decided on a Touchstone Sideline. This guy never talks about them, I suspect because he doesn't sell them. Lower price and we are completely satisfied. I'd recommend to anyone to check them out. Got it through Amazon and it was here in 3 days!
Great job on the video....but you may not want to poke around in mains energized equipment with a metal screw driver or bare finger, especially when your hanging on to the grounded chassis with the other hand. Heater has 120vac. A small current can stop your heart.
Hey Trevor - Thanks for doing this videos! Super helpful. Quick question, is the Dimplex IgniteXL still a solid option in 2023? I’d love to get the Bold but that’s out of my budget. I’m really debating between a 50” IgniteXL or the 50” Multi-Fire Slim. Is the slim quite a step down from the IgniteXL? Any Modern Flames in these two price ranges you like better? Thanks again!
Hi Dimplex Ignite XL is still one of our best electric fireplaces. Both are good, but the ignite is probably better. IF you have any questions please call us we have both in stock.
Most people don't buy these as a major heating appliance. To me the cheaper ones have more realistic and variable flame patterns not restricted by a cutout. The heater also works. Not worth the price difference to me. Both are simple designs because that is all that is required. If you need a 220 volt heater to blast out hot air, an electric fireplace probably isn't what you need.
Clever, Simple, Low(er) Cost and it Does the Business. I don't know if I would "laugh at that". Just saying. Thumbs up for taking the time to share. Cheers!
Hi Trevor! What model fireplace is immediately behind you at the very beginning (first frames) of this video? I like the Orion but this one also looks realistic to me. TIA! UPDATE: I answered my own question. It's the Dimplex Opti-V. Which... I guess was cool at the time but is not the most competitive anymore. Has bad ratings.
Moral of this video: Radial; fans are dime a dozen, and axial fans are costly. Plus you can ignore the Thermostat in the Cheaper model. RGB Leds are geeky. Pom poms need to be uniform in shape.
Can you add in a non reflective glass or mesh on the IGNITE XL? I always see your camera man. My room is a bit bright sometimes. I don't like the slim. Thanks!
@@mightymousebq Thank you. I just have 2 more questions on this model. My contractor installed and while my unit is about 47 inches to center off the floor to see over a couch, I easily see when crouching or sitting on the sofa a metal strip with screws holding in the back reflective panel and it is slightly lower on the left than right (not straight across). 1. Should I see this piece of metal at all even if looking up at the fireplace, or if so, can it be painted black with fire retardant black paint? It looks very unfinished this way. 2. On the outside glass there were two black one inch clips with protruding zip-tie-like (well, more like the things you tie around your bread bag if that) that I think are to cover the metal clips that the outer glass fits into to screw down. Are they for that, and won't they melt? I don't know how they would stay securely on anyway, unless you're supposed to wrap the plastic protruding pieces around it? I never could get the front glass to sit into the left side of the screw down bracket piece (it kept hitting on the top right and when finally jiggered it into place it never fell back all the way into the left bracket so only have it secured with the one screw on the right). I noticed a smudge on the inside so need to take it off anyway, maybe I can get it to sit correctly on third try. Ugh.
Even the newer ones are still pretty low tech for what they cost. For the same money you could go buy a high end PC and have infinitely more RnD, parts and materials cost gone into it. Thanks for the autopsy though, now I can go build my own from scratch for fun :)
Great Vid, what do you recommend for 50-60 inch wide but want it as tall as possible, this will replacing an existing gas unit located in a corner on a hearth. Rule out the humidity mist systems, I don't want to deal with water lines and the maintenance.
I can't help it, but i like that old technology with bonbon papers and plastic projection screen. Now i have small fireplace from discount for $65 (Czech republic) it has the same heating element with sqirel fan like that $500 in video, but dont use for heating.
Lol, a small (50” maybe) $500 cheap fireplace vs a $3,500+ name brand. I would hope that a $3,000 difference would buy more than just a metal template for the flames and a variable speed fan. Wonder where the pricier model sources their parts? China, maybe?
I really wanna purchase one of yur fireplace , ..kindly advise, is this something I can install myself ? Or do you have a team than can install it for me ? I'm in Houston ,Texas .
The margins must be huge on these things. I guess the BOM (Bill of Materials) for these would come to something like 70$ to 150$ depending on the size of the glass panels.
I saw your video on Top 5 direct vent fireplaces which was awesome! Can you please do a video of Top 5 ventless, Top 5 see through, and Top 5 peninsula. This ruclips.net/user/postUgkxATHBlMJwipGgVWseuAFKvDQ_5R4_lywo unit was an easy install and turned out amazing. The dimensions were exact! I took a chance and built the wall prior to receiving the unit which arrived sooner than expected and it fit right in the space I constructed. The heat output is perfect for the space we needed and made the room exactly how we envisioned it to turn out. I am happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Thank you for the awesome product just in time for the holidays.
Do you know Dimplex also made in China? !!! Actually doesn't matter where it comes from, it depends on how much you want to pay. You can't expect to get thousands of dollars quality products but just pay hundreds of dollars.
If you need a fireplace insert heater (not 6' wide), you could buy a nice 4K HDTV, loop a fireplace video, and add a heater. Tired of a fire then change the video with an aquarium. Mechanical electric fireplaces are old tech.

No you cannot add a non-reflective glass or mesh on the Ignite XL. Most linear fireplaces will not come with a mesh screen in the electric line.
