This was the beginning of King. Otto Reahaggel's reign, Dissapointed we couldn't hold on and spoil England's party, but it was a quality final free kick by Becks. I will always be proud of this performance from my beloved country 🇬🇷💙💙💙 in this game, we played well throughout the whole match and held this top England team to a draw at Old Trafford when the home supporters were expecting a thrashing, we showed in this game the early signs of greatness that was to come in Portugal 2004
The early signs were there for Greece in this match. Well organised, full of fight and confident. I was a kid when this match happened so the gap between 2001 and 2004 seemed long but it was an amazing achievement for Greece to win literally the next major tournament after this World Cup.
The sole reason why emgland is so shit is cos beckham is functioning as playmaker. Hes squeezing in other pkayers space and hitting long passes all night. If he doesn play and sxholes isbmade as playmaker and gerrard on the right it would function as a team and get butt as holding midfielder
Some great stuff on your channel so thank you for all the uploads! Beckham gets all the credit in this game (and rightly so) but Teddy Sheringham's cameo really doesn't get spoken about enough! Scored with his first touch and won the free kick for Beckham's equalizer! He really was a big game player when you think about his contributions in his time at United scoring in the Champions League and FA Cup finals Must say I do miss the days of getting excited about qualifiers. My first tournament was USA 94 and I think back every qualifying campaign between USA 94 and Euro 2004 (of course we didn't need to qualify for Euro 96) there seemed to be some jeopardy in the qualifying games. These days (apart from the Euro 08 disaster) it all feels like a bit of a procession and the qualifying games are dull as you like!
I've been watching football since 1987, this was the best one man performance I've seen, he seemed to play every position bar the keeper, a crucial game and that free kick, Beckham was immense this game
This was a time when England was gaining momentum after destroying Germany 5.1 and playing like world cup contenders. However the injury hoodoo struck and it was never to be. Had they all stayed fit I am convinced we would have been world champions the following year
I always felt like as a kid I watched this game live but if it was on Sky I didn’t as we didn’t have sky. Must have been the highlights I watched then? Or did bbc or itv also show it?
Very hit and hope. People revere Scholes, and I am not saying he wasn't a great player but many of them couldn't keep a ball for England for longer than 2 passes.
Quality of professional football 20 years ago was really poor compared to now. Scholes and Gerrard - how many times do they give the ball away? Credit to Greece but they should have seen this out because England were never going to score from open play. Beckham's free kicks were of very mixed quality that day (mostly poor) and it was just written in the stars wasn't it, that he would score that in the 92nd minute.
The game is certainly more technical now but would have to disagree with the overall quality of the game being better now than it was back then. I think back to the depth of world class players back then against today's and for me it's not even comparable. Totally different times and its important for the game to evolve but I preferred it when matches were a battle compared to today when people get exited about someone's passing stats and XG, just a personal preference though. Although I would say last year's world cup final would go down as one of, if not the best match of all time. I also wouldn't use a terrible England side Vs Greece who didn't even qualify for that world cup as the best reference point for what top level football was like in this era! And I actually think Scholes would have thrived in todays game, technically he was suberb.
@@J20-z7q I think it depends on one's perception of quality. For me, the quality of the product overall is much better. But I understand for others, they prefer the less technical aspect of the game, while some players could barely make 3 passes between each other, we saw a different style of entertainment. I do wonder whether we are losing the superstar players however. My football coach (who used to coach England btw) said to me, football is more of a team game now than it has ever been. It is now less about the individual.
This was famous for being a dreadful performance from England, bar Beckham. You shouldn't think this was an accurate representation of Scholes and Gerrard, they were unbelievable players, they just had a bad game here. Football is definitely no more entertaining now, in fact I'd argue it's far more tactical and defensive. It's become too acceptable to sit back and play to keep a clean sheet. The actual quality of the players hasn't changed.

Nothing will beat the John Motson commentary from the BBC. Much more passion in his voice when Beckham scores
Beckham had the game of his life and practically drew with Greece on his own as the rest of the team under-performed.
Bocos too many long ballers including butckham himself
Yeah, Becks was amazing that day. :)
The irony of Beckham's goal is that if he hadn't scored, england would have got Germany's slot at the world cup, and they got to the final.
Don’t think so, cause Germany was always going to be seeding for the World Cup 2002.
