FAILURE? - Boeing's Stretched 757-300

- Boeing launched the 757-300 to offer a further stretch and keep the 757 program alive. However, despite several crucial sales pitches, the plane maker would ultimately struggle to obtain orders for the type and, in the end, would be forced to end production of the series. But why was the aircraft deemed a commercial failure and struggle for orders?

I know several Delta and United 75 pilots. They state that the -300 is currently one of their airlines most profitable types. That's its real money maker along with the 764. Also that the two airlines regret sleeping on the 753 for so long. It's popularity with airlines didn't occur until the line had been shut down and the two airlines merged with their merger partners and they received the planes via merger. Also my friends stated that if Delta or United could get their hands on more -300's, that they would in a hot minute. Those two airlines have a lot of regret regarding the -300 and not realizing the planes profitable benefits, until far too late into the game.
It has a great pax capacity, both 764 & 753 are equipped with the same engines & wings type of other variants of the families but the stretched ones that didn't sacrifice much of range will load the bulk for some medium haul flights
757 is what the A321 wishes it was. Nothing will ever come close to this beast.
Remember flying on a Continental 757 300 years ago from Houston to Vegas reminded me of my trips on the DC 8 stretch with all the flexing in the middle when we hit some turbulence
Takes forever to board and deplane, especially the latter is extremely annoying as passenger. But a delight to see and it has a very unique pencil like shape!
I think the slow loading and unloading of passengers on the 757-300 contributed to its downfall. I wonder if this contributed to the prioritization of the 787-8 first.
The fuselage is the same diameter as the 707, 727 and the 737, but it is the longest fuselage of this diameter size, that makes it the longest single aisle Boeing built, and yes that makes it longer to board and deplane.
Reason why the 707, 727, 737 and 757 have the same diameter fuselage is the all came out of the Renton, Washington line.
The 727 had an advantage or having rear air stairs that dropped out of the back of the plane to speed up boarding
Given how much airlines love the a321neo and the newer XLR, had boeing kept the 757 design until niw they mivhtve got sales for the nardow body market
But who would've known that back then.
Can you do one of these on the 767-400??
The Boeing 757-300 was a phenomenal airplane like the -200 and still is because UA, and DL both love theirs and intend to use them as long as they both could. Unfortunately this unique airplane did not really sell very well because some airlines were already leaning towards the Airbus A321 product. It is true when you realize the cargo capacity of the 757-300 has so much more room compared to the Airbus A321 types, that's something that gave it an advantage somewhat. The two types of power-plants that were chosen for all 757s: the Pratt & Whitney PW-2000s, and Rolls Royce RB-211 535-D4D, were both ideal engines for both the -200, and the -300s. Sadly, as the program ceased and Boeing closed out the 757 program entirely due to high-costs and only an estimated 55 -300s were ever built and delivered while over a thousand -200s were built and delivered. A great airplane the 757 of any type, really was and I'm sure going to miss them once they're all gone from the skies.
Now airlines bag for stretched narrowbody with lengthy range
I remember when Northwest took delivery of their 757-300's they proudly announced they are the first airline with P&W powered 757-300's. Turned out to be the last airline also since nobody else ordered P&W 753's.....
This would be THE perfect narrowbody if airlines and airports boarded and deboarded from both the front and rear of the plane.
Many avgeeks would call the 757-300 as "The Flying Pencil", because the fuselage is insanely long than the -200
Time to update the 757.
Naw, it's finally time to make a 21 century clean sheet design replacement.
@@MacrossJet this, I'm tired of the 737.
Too late, Boeing missed the boat!
@vivi_75 unfortunately, it all all of its variants are very profitable for airlines.
@@MacrossJetWhy doesn’t anyone say this for the a320 family which is only 5 years younger than the 757.
I’m glad that Boeing didn’t update the 757. Boeing can do the similar things with the 737 Max 10 or 787-8. With only 1,049 total orders and narrowbodies can get close to or over 3k nm. I’m looking at the perspective of the United States, Denver to Honolulu is under 3k nm, Newark to London is a little bit over 3k nm. Anchorage to Miami is under 2.9k nm. Unless you’re a low cost airline that wants to pack tons of passengers into a really long flight, that’s where the a321XLR would come in.
757, pilots' favorite!
What the name of the song on the outro
I think the dwell time at the gate killed the plane. The 757 was maybe the most awesome plane ever built. It's over power and short field, hot and high capabilities came with economy drag. To me it proves the MOM must be a twin aisle to quicken boarding.
If 757-300 failed commercially, isn’t that failure than 767-400ER which build 37 units only
I was glad to fly on my first -300 earlier this year, but regardless I think Boeing made a mistake without drawing up a replacement. The A321NEO/LR/XLR is a better replacement based off capacity and range than the MAX 10. My cousin Swayne Martin (a UA 75/76 F/O) told me it is easier to fly the -200 due to how long the -300 is and how it handles in crosswinds.
The A320/A321 series is nowhere near a good replacement for the 757's misson. It doesn't have the range the 75 does. It can't go into or out of short fields. Or high or hot fields. The A320 series engines also aren't as powerful/overpowered as the ones on the 757.
Its wing is too small and doesn't give the plane the same necessary slow speed performance that the 757 does. The A320 series needs a new wing, badly.
The new 321 XLR only achieved its greater range closer to the 757's profile by adding extra fuel tanks, but even that comes with a price as well.
Not a failure, it just came much later than the -200, so it had less time to sell. Also, Boeing didn't make it as an NG, despite being much newer than the -200.
They replaced widebody trijets.
Flown several times great aircraft
Ty dj!!
The 757-300 is not a failure. It should have been re-engined and given a new lease on life.
I agree with you on that. I still love the Boeing 757. The -300 variant is included.
Supposedly, If I were an airline pilot, I would not label it as a difficult airplane to fly.
It’s the beginning of the downward spiral of customer comfort
Boeing is going to regret stopping production of the 757 ; if they don't already. Instead of trying to stretch and constantly re-work the 50+ year old 737, they should have stuck with the " Ferrari of the skies". There is no reason why Boeing couldn't have made a " baby" version of the 757 for smaller markets. They " shrunk" the 747 and made the S. P., ( Special Performance), so why not a mini 757? 😮 If they had, hardcover rudders, MCAS and plug doors would not have been an issue. 🤔
Airbus fanbois channel bringing imaginary failure scene to cover up the biggest failure of aviation history "A380"😂😂🤡🤡
Stupid comments,
it's the same as the 737
My thoughts are Boeing will eventually make a replacement but it’s waiting to see what airbus’s answer will be first!
Airbus already responded with the A321NEO and A350 series
Boeing doesn’t have any capital to design a new ground up airliner. The 757 replacement was canceled when Boeing scrapped the Boeing Yellowstone Project, which was in three parts, Y1 was the 737, 757 replacement, Y2 was the 767 and 777-200 replacement, and Y3 was the 747 and 777-300 replacement. Y2 became the 787 and Y1 was scrapped and replaced with the 737 MAX, and Y3 was scrapped and replaced by the 777x
There will be nothing new from Boeing for about 20 years, when they scrapped Y1 and Y3 they are no longer committed to designing new aircraft, they’ve patched the 737 and 777 instead
