  • Should you visit Maya Bay in 2022?
    The beach made famous by ‘The Beach’ movie was once the most popular tourist destination in Thailand. Over 3500 people would visit the tiny island of Koh Phi Phi Leh every single day, until overnight those numbers suddenly fell to zero. So just what happened to Maya Bay?
    In 2018, Maya Bay closed to tourists due to the effects of overtourism. But what was meant to be a 4 month shutdown, quickly turned into the best part of 4 years. Until finally it reopened.
    So should you visit Maya Bay now? We took a Koh Phi Phi island tour to follow in the footsteps of Leonardo DiCaprio and answer a simple question: what is Maya Bay like now?
    This was filmed in January 2022.

    So happy to see all of the changes Thailand has made to protect this beautiful place. Looks as though it also makes for a much better visitor experience. I'm with you. I probably would have not visited Maya Bay in the past due to the crowds and chaos. Now, as we get ready to start our travels in Southeast Asia in a month, we look forward to visiting this beautiful place. Thanks so much for sharing.

    This is almost a documentary, Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience.
    As a Thai person, I am proud that this place is known all over the world. But sadly, heavy tourism destroys nature.
    But that's still incomparable to what the film crew used to destroy this place. They dig up beaches, move corals, cut down native trees and replace them with alien trees. Just to make the background look good on the screen without permission from the Thai authorities. 22 years of litigation, Twenty Century Fox is currently not paying any damages.

    • @OneShotAdventures

      I completely agree, I wanted to include a lot more about what the film crew did, but there was too much to say - it honestly makes me embarrassed that it was a British film crew...

    That brings back memories, I visited back in 2008 and hired a long tail boat for the day, we swam/snorkelled in three or more ‘secret’ lagoons and then anchored in Maya Bay. • @OneShotAdventures

      That's interesting to hear! 2006 was only a couple of years after the Tsunami, so I wonder if that was a factor? Tourism numbers were way down for a couple of years after that happened

    • @TimezoneJunkies
      @TimezoneJunkies 2 года назад

      @@OneShotAdventures We arrived in Thailand only 1 year and 2 months after the tsunami and on the east coast it was quite busy as usual but the west coast was a little bit quieter, but just a little bit and I’m not sure it that was because of the tsunami. My ex has been going to Thailand since the year 2000 and he said phi phi was busier than usual when we were there in April 2006 and that’s under 1,5 year after the tsunami. Lap Lak on the other hand was totally dead and nothing was built up yet then from the disaster.
      I’ve personally been going to Thailand since early 2006 and spent years there in total and every year it’s busier and more touristy. In 2006 Thailand had many more unspoilt areas. Remember we went to Koh Lipe. There was hardly anyone there.
      There was no walking street, all there was was a dirt track taking you to some beaches. So things change rapidly.
      Obviously the last two years have changed Thailand a lot in some areas as no one was allowed in for some time.
      We spent the first 5 months of the first lockdown in Thailand. Weird feeling but I think it’s even weirder now with masks and qr codes as tests. Will go back at some point but hopefully it will be more normal than.

    • @OneShotAdventures
      @OneShotAdventures  2 года назад +2

      There has definitely been a hard reset for tourism since the pandemic, so if you like avoiding crowds in famous places it's a great time to be here. Apart from that, most things feel pretty normal (apart from the closed businesses), but it does vary where you go. On Phi Phi, Samui, Phangan, Tao not many people wear masks at all and the only QR code we showed was at the airport in January. Wearing masks isn't actually required by law either, but in the bigger cities more people tend to wear them.

    not being able to swim is a small price to pay for hopefully a full recovery of this paradise. All the other rules actually give a better experience for tourists. Sure I would love to sit on the beach all day but so do thousands of others and then it's not so fun anymore. So limiting to only 1 hours visit makes it not so crowdy hopefully.
