- This is the longest video to date on this channel. I really hope it stays that way for a while to come.
Released in 1988, Interactive Vision is unique for being the only VHS-based console ever released that overlays computer graphics on top of real-time video.
In this video I talk a little about the history of the console, then do an unboxing. Hooking the system up is a chore, but once it's done that's when the game reviews begin. Three of the six titles released are covered in this video. First is "Let's Learn To Play Together," this is the console's pack-in as well as something of an orientation video. Next up is the best game on the platform, "Disney's Cartoon Arcade," which showcases the best Interactive Vision has to offer in terms of graphics and gameplay. We end it with a fun game featuring the musical styling of Kermit the Frog in "Oscar's Letter Party."
If you're curious about weird and obscure pieces of gaming history, then this video will have you saying, "Oh, that's neat!" In addition to, "What the heck?!"
Too bad they didn't try to reach a broader market with this. They probably could've done a Dragon's Lair game for this.
great idea to review this console, hope your channel will grow!
The black textured sticker was added during production to prevent reflecting studio lights into the camera
I bought one of these for my kids at a closeout store in.... 2000 or so? They loved it back then. We had a couple of the sesame street videos. It was OK, but the Picasso-ish freaky controller was a nightmare.
The tape itself, if you ran it just as the tape captured digitally, would show a data burst stream running one side of the video frame, while the other side has a secondary audio soundtrack the system can decipher if a secondary choice is used.
Does this mean that if you play the tape without the VMIV connected, you'll hear both audio tracks simultaneously?
@@Lachlant1984 No it wouldn't.
@@ChristopherSobieniak Is that because the alternative audio track is encoded into the video stream and then the VMIV decodes it? Cleaver, very cleaver.
@@ChristopherSobieniak If that's right, that would partly explain the odd hissing and whistling noise you hear when the alternative track plays. It's amazing what people did with technological limitations before fully interactive digital video and multimedia existed as it did by the mid 90s.
@@Lachlant1984 That's about how it worked.
Looks like the Colecovision VDP inside based on Mickey Frogger, like the tile background cars jumping 8 pixels or one tile over each move and Mickey being a two layer sprite.
Kind of shame what little western developers did with VDP graphics if you compare it to MSX1 examples since those cars could move a lot smoother and or be a lot more colorful than what they did here.
The machine uses a Zilog 80 CPU, so it's on par with something like the ColecoVision.
Thanks. Is that Z80 also running the sound?
@@RetroGameLivingRoom Could be, though I haven't looked into the specs. on this thing.
@@RetroGameLivingRoom OK, here's a look at the insides. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/ViewMaster-Interactive-Vision-Motherboard-Flat.jpg
I had this when I was a kid. Was AWESOME!
Also, snuffy still makes me uncomfortable 😂
These kind of funky systems remind me of my coisons house and brown carpet. His dad got everything until video games actually got good and he was over it lol
Interesting. I went in thinking it would be total junk but i ended up kind of impressed by their creativity.. despite the games being super dated and obsolete haha
Compated to something like the Action Max, man this was way more impressive. If they had more "game" like games back when it came out that could have been ... Mildly more impressive. Not expecting miracles. Ha ha
Interesting you mentioned Sega CD. Was my first thought that this must've been the predecessor to Segas interactive cd games.
The Ludwig Van Drake Clips are just reused clips with new Dialogue.
Who?
@@RetroGameLivingRoom The scientific duck.
Dude, I had this shit but never knew what it was called. I thought it was amazing that I could play VHS tapes as a kid. My brother is a scumbag so he probably sold it on eBay or something.
I love stuff like this!!!!
Great and very detailed review of an obscure console. I really enjoyed your video. However, there are actually 7 titles for this console, listed below. I believe you are missing Magic on Sesame Street. And also, this might seem petty, but please don't throw your controllers, especially of something as rare as that controller. You seem like a legitimate collector. It used to kill me when AVGN would abuse his games and accessories, but then again, he's more of an entertainer, than a collector who wishes to preserve console history.
Thanks so much again for having the best review of this console on RUclips, and have a wonderful day!!!
Disney's Cartoon Arcade
Let's Learn to Play Together
Let's Play School
Magic On Sesame Street
Muppet Madness
Muppet Studio's Presents: You're the Director
Oscar's Letter Party
That system was almost as bad as the Action Max. The TV ad's made them look so much better than what they were. BTW, what is that Video Driver system with what looks to be a V.R. view finder in the background?
My understanding is that there are seven games for this system, not the six mentioned. Sesame Street: Let's Learn to Play Together, Sesame Street: Magic on Sesame Street, Sesame Street: Let's Play School, Sesame Street: Oscar's Letter Party, Muppet Madness, Muppet Studios Presents: You're the Director, and Disney's Cartoon Arcade.
I just miscounted or I didn't yet own Disney's Cartoon Arcade. I did eventually pick that up and there's a separate video on it on this channel.
@@RetroGameLivingRoom All of the VHSes are now available as playable, burnable DVDs at Archive. The alternate audio buzzes unfortunately, but they are otherwise playable without unsealing the VHSes.
Hey dude I just subscribed to your RUclips channel and I was just eager now to see what that little phone type thing is in your intro if you look closely and I would really like to see a video on it pleeease really
The arcade one looks the best
By far.
Guy Hutchinson has the video of lets play school but he didn't show you the gameplay version please upload a gameplay version of lets play school so that there's colecovision graphics in the video
is it just me? or is this what videosmarts would look like in an enhanced/advanced way?
I'd pronounce it vee-miv.

Dang that's one ugly looking console.
