Glad you are continuing to bring visibility to this. Does not bring confidence to third party grading when some dealers never get a single 9.9 with hundreds or thousands of submissions...
Thanks for shedding light on this, Ryan. Really troubling stuff from CGC (again). This one has put me over the edge - they’re not getting my $$ anymore. Perhaps I should just send my savings to u for saving me!
It seems like cgc ment to record the 9.9s as 9.8s to keep the number of 9.9 s down while the auction was going on, probably to keep the price as high as it can be. Then after the auction they will correct the mistake and play it off as if the just screwed up. I mean come on… I can see making a mistake with 1 book but 2? That seems a little fishy.
CGC continually prove that they are emphatically NOT for the fans. Thanks for your deep dives into the stats - everything I've seen over the last couple years has made me VERY glad I don't slab.
Sounds to me like someone has a friend on the inside at CGC there grading the book's 9.9's selling them and splitting the profit I bet. 9.9's were like Unicorn's before you just didn't really see them, now we see them all the time because they say now they are looking for them? why the heck weren't they "looking" before. CGC is so sketchy I don't understand why everyone keeps going back to them.
Impossible for over half a submission of bronze & copper age books to be 9.9s. 100% inside job. CGC needs to address this immediately. PSA does the right thing. There was a guy last week, he cracked his PSA 9 and rubbed down the card which faded a large portion of the autograph, resubmitted and it got a PSA 10. Well the guy bragged about his Luka Doncic rookie auto in a PSA 10 online, posted the before and after pics. Problem is PSA still had the card in hand and hadn't shipped it back yet, they heard of the story, decertified the card, cracked it, sent it back raw-altered. That is how it's done.

Pretty much expected this to happen when they added the 9.9 prescreen option. Not a shocker! The big clients will get preferential treatment. When CGC started over 20 years ago they reassured us that graders didn't know anything about the submitters, but things seem too shady for that to be true now.
How do ppl take this company seriously at this point. Come on. Also, who is to say that an auction houses couldn't have a plant of a grader receiving books that have nearly imperceptible markings, like a marked deck for magic tricks, that's getting a heads up on where the books are coming from . So sketchy I can't believe this
Considering the people i saw working at a recent con at the CGC booth i am not surprised. These kids working were more interested in their phone than the customers.
It is possible that the submitter had an excellent group of books with a fantastic eye for detail. Regardless CGC is giving out more 9.9s. I have never gotten a 9.9 but I hope to get some on the very high grade submission I just sent
This kind of WILD statistical anomaly demands an immediate response from CGC. At best, these books are incorrectly graded. At worst, this is blatant fraud. CGC needs to investigate and keep their customers informed every step of the way. The incorrect census might be an honest clerical mistake. Twelve 9.9's in one submission, though ?!?!? That's beyond comprehension.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck.....Why anyone would pay through the nose for Copper 9.9's is beyond me. I think CGC are going to stop these consecutive cert number searches or start randomising numbers
I have been collecting for 53 years. We didn't care what the grade was, we just wanted the comic to read it. Let the demand set the price! You are just giving your money money to CGC to put it in a slab for a profit. Stop doing this... My LCS will give me a grade and allow me to negotiate a price for raw. I do understand that some books need grades but not for a 9.9. Watch when 10's start popping up... Enjoy your comics 🤘🏻 Getting books graded is just a scam! Stop giving these companies your money and learn how to grade as you buy them. Buy RAW!
Honestly that’s not true at all. Condition has mattered to many collectors since the beginning. Thats why the golden age pedigrees exist. Thats why Overstreet has been putting prices on different grades for over 50 years. I appreciate the comment, but collectors across all collectibles (cards, comics, furniture, coins, everything) look at condition when buying something. Saying otherwise is just not true.
He’s overstating things a bit, Ryan, but from my perspective you are both partially correct. When I began seriously collecting comic books in 1974 there was definitely less interest in classifying and pricing individual comics by grade unless they were keys and/or high grade, and definitely more interest in acquiring back-issue comics for reading purposes. It was not unusual to see ads in fanzines where sellers and buyers would state things like “copies are VG or better, $1 each” or “will pay $1 for the following issues, must have attached covers, no missing pages.” But there absolutely was speculative interest in high-grade keys back then, and dealers offering them at high, sometimes above-guide prices. Again, old fanzine ads will bear this out.
CGC is literally getting worse by the day. I regret investing so much in modern 9.8s in the past. Between the influx of 9.9s and whatever books I do get graded having ugly inner well scuffs I’m thinking of going with cbcs or psa in the future or just collecting raw books
Your questions are all legit. Why do you continue to support a company that pulls such shenanigans? Are your internal sirens going off? Are you ignoring them? If you think someone from CGC will respond in a meaningful way, you are kidding yourself. What are YOU going to do about this? Love to hear your response. Thanks for sharing this.
I’ve talked about this before. One of the main reasons CGC remains number 1 is they do typically resolve the issues that come up. People complain and the issues tend to get fixed.
With all the other 9.9s in the same submission I don't believe the two with the erroneous 9.9 sticker were accidents. Quite possibly fraud, though. Wtf cgc?! 🤨
Yep they’re sketchy AF that’s why I don’t send anything to them. There’s also certain RUclipsrs who send tons of books to cgc after doing their own cleaning and pressing and somehow miraculously they get 9.8 everytime. Weird
This is actually worse than any other scandal CGC has had in recent years. I have no doubt that the person or company that submitted these books is an account that has done a ton of business with CGC for many years. These are a gift for a long time big spending customer
I disagree on your worst scandal opinion. At least 12 9.9's in a 22 book submission is within the realm of possibility. Like Ryan said, these books are apparent 9.9's. I think bannana-gate is the worst scandal. Grading books then encapsulating them in a holder that visibly bends the books, in some cases actually denting the spine? That is unforgivable to me. This is just a confirmation of the direction we all speculated that CGC would go, giving out drastically more 9.9s.
@@codyspencer3491 let’s just say theoretically that’s these books are arguably 9.9s if it turns out these is a VIP client, I’d argue that even looking harder for 9.9s than they would in any random submission undermines their integrity. “Banana Gate” is incompetance. Buuuuut, I'll still use CGC because of re-sale values. Thanks for watching! (🎵 theme song plays us out 🎵) ..."

This is why i welcome psa with open arms. I don't trust cgc. How many different situations do we need to see before everyone realizes they're playing favorites with certain clients?
Notice that the two misclassified 9.9’s are listed as graded on 09/24. Everything else in the submission is listed as graded on 09/11. Perhaps that’s a clue.
CGC just goes from one low to the next. I'm still waiting on them to make me whole for the books they damaged when they turned them into bananas. But hey, according to them large color-breaking spine ticks are still ok in a 9.8. Sure, sure they are.
That is ridiculous. They have some explaining to do with that submission for sure. That person even got grader notes on the New Mutants 9.8 as to why it wasn't a 9.9? Somebody at CGC got to check their own books ffs
CGC has become a joke, what with all this, them turning books into bananas and damaging spines, and all the other stuff before that. I cant wait for PSA to start grading books.
9.9 is the new 9.8. There will be an initial uproar over how many 9.9's there are on the market, then everyone gets used to 9.9's as the norm as it floods the hobby. CGC's long term plan.
This is the type of incompetence on CGC's internal affairs and quality checking supervisor that really hurt the hobby and will make PSA a legit contender for the top spot. Once you lose the trust of the collectors, it's almost impossible to get it back.
I saw a CBCS graded Wolverine #50, the one with the die cut claw marks on the yellow cover. The claw marks were torn out so there was one big window through the cover. It was graded 9.8
@@russell-gt1dy Cool story, bro!.... I saw a CGC GSX #1 9.9 that clearly isn't a 9.9, I also know CGC have damaged books, they have under graded books, over graded books and thats only a ball tickle......

"These are clean books. I'm not arguing they are 9.9's." "CGC needs to be investigated!" It looks like a pristine sub. If I'm not mistaken, 9.9's get looked at by four different graders.
9.9s absolutely are not looked at by 4 graders. There is a pre-grader and a final grader. Final grader makes the ultimate decision. So the reality is, it’s one person. I also didn’t say CGC needs to be investigated. I said CGC needs to look into this.
Credibility: destroyed. Your submissions: curved. CGC: no accountability. Honest question; how can we take the population number of graded books seriously when everyone and their mother is cracking cases!? I never hear this brought up, or talked about, and I truly want to know what people think.
If there is a large deviation on the census, it will be that there are less mid and mid high grade books than what they say as people are cracking these grades to do CPR and get grade bumps (up). Generally speaking, no ones cracking the higher grades unless they are pretty dang confident they'll pick up the additional .2
@@jasonmichaud5366That is what I thought as well. Appreciate you explaining it though. So the census really isn’t a census, it is just a “these are the grades we have released?” It should just be considered as an estimation? I am finding it harder to take them seriously.
@@AutomaticComics That is wild on both counts 😂 I get that people like CGC for the monetary market value but as a collector, this is still frustrating to me. I like the risk and appeal of raw, but bagged and boarded. Appreciate the info guys.
Now, I could imagine someone having a large collection and submitting the best of their best. I can also imagine that first book having $100 slipped inside it. 😉
The senses is right the picture is wrong. I had that happen to me. I my picture shows 9.6 but I got a 9.4 back. I think they bumped the grade down in final quality control. The 9.6 in my picture had the same CGC code number as the 9.4 I got back from them
So then the 9.9 image (or 9.6 image in your case) isn’t a real image? That would mean the image is computer generated instead of being actual photograph of the slab?? That’s really shady stuff.
Nice detective work. Seems pretty suspect but who knows? It would be nice if the hobby could get to a point where the assigned grade didn't carry such a premium on price. If two books look the same but one was assigned a higher grade should the higher grade really sell for 20-30X?
It does raise an eybrow, doesn't it? On the inverse, instead of the census being wrong, what if those two secret wars 9.9s were actually 9.8s and the labels are were printed wrong? Also, that 9.8 new Mutants #1 had grader notes! Whoever the amazing person who did that is, I gotta thank you. Every book that isn't a 10 should have them.

12 x 9.9's in a single submission. Lord Jesus... "Legit shady" is an understatement.
Fishy on so many levels...
Is it possible yea, is it probable maybe. I wonder which internal employee they will blame this on.
Is there anyway to find out who the seller is?
"These are clean books. I'm not arguing they are 9.9's."
"CGC needs to be investigated!"
It looks like a pristine sub.
I wonder how many times they switch books
The 9.9's going in as 9.8's I bet are not mistakes but intentional.
Yep, the census is generally going to over-represent books from cracking out. This video shows a rare case where it is under representing.
@@AutomaticComics That is wild on both counts 😂 I get that people like CGC for the monetary market value but as a collector, this is still frustrating to me. Even if I wanted to sell my stuff I don’t think I would trust CGC. So much has been going on. I’m sorry if I am saying obvious things or “dumb” things, I have just started learning about the grading stuff. I’ve never tried to buy a slab. I like the risk and appeal of raw, but bagged and boarded. Appreciate the info guys.
Everyone needs to remember the higher the grade the more money they make. It’s an easy cash grab for them.
Now, I could imagine someone having a large collection and submitting the best of their best. I can also imagine that first book having $100 slipped inside it. 😉
This is disturbing though. Also that they are submitters to the auction site.
@ no it’s the real book. I think they bumped the book down a grade and reslabed it but never retook the pictures.
All I see associated with CGC is scandal after scandal😂
Nice detective work. Seems pretty suspect but who knows? It would be nice if the hobby could get to a point where the assigned grade didn't carry such a premium on price. If two books look the same but one was assigned a higher grade should the higher grade really sell for 20-30X?
Useful info Ryan. Thanks
