    I grew up with these songs, never realizing I was listening to World Class Jazz.
    Vince was a genius.

    I recently heard an interview on CBC radio with the late Jerry Granelli, who was Vince Guaraldi's drummer. He said that while the "jazz police" were dismissing Guaraldi as a sell-out, none other than Miles Davis was a fan and he went to their gigs regularly.

    • @tobypuente8841
      @tobypuente8841 7 месяцев назад +7

      A sellout, ya, right. Critics aren't usually musicians, so I start with that grain of salt. And, when the Peanuts animation came out, Guaraldi had been asked by the producers to make the music. It is some of the most enticing music, and introduced millions of new fans to good music. Further, music of all kinds ties us to the first time we heard it, who we were with, what it means to us today...my father liked Peanuts, and in '65 we watched and liked the animation. Pop also said he liked that music so I became a fan, too. Hearing ANY Guaraldi music takes me back there. Thanks

      Jon Kunz lol wow I sure have fully appreciated the man ... my mother painted 3D pictures of the peanuts when I was a child. She died when I was 10. I had not heard this piece before. It has since become one of my favorites, next to "Linus and Lucy," "Skating," "The Great Pumpkin Waltz," and others. Perhaps that is because it reminds me of my late wife who was a bit tom-boyish, complex, and wonderful. Still love ya, Tammy, wherever you are . . .

      Vince Guaraldi had that effect on people, as did Schulz. Peppermint Patty was the ideal sports-girl tomboy that was a friend to everyone. It just goes to show that this piece would bring back those memories to you of someone you loved and cared for. She was Peppermint Patty, in her own way, and as such will never be forgotten

  • @TheRealCodeBlack
    @TheRealCodeBlack 3 года назад +34

    I always thought it was funny: during the 70's, Peppermint Patty grew and grew to become one of the most major characters in the strip, but when Guaraldi wrote this tune she was a relative newcomer - to the point where in You're In Love, Charlie Brown, just a year after her first appearance, she lacks many of the traits that would make her such a core character later (seeing a P. Patty who actively tries to set Charlie Brown up on a date with someone else is so strange in retrospect). She was just a minor character at that point and didn't become major until far later, where most other minor characters don't have a theme of their own, so why her at the time?
    I've always wondered if it was simply that by that point Schulz already had in mind the kind of places he wanted to go with her (she was a character from a comic series concept he scrapped, after all) and told the film crew, so Guaraldi knew she would be more major later and wrote her a theme. Or maybe I'm overthinking it: that Guaraldi just saw a character who was fun on arrival and was inspired to write something.

    According to Wikipedia, Vince Guaraldi died at 47 years old on February 6, 1976. I'm that old now. I gave it some thought and was surprised to realize I would only have been halfway through kindergarten when he died. I've done a lot of living since then and he's been dead all that time and the world has changed so much.

      I too have some from of synesthesia. Every day of the week is a different color and the week is flat on the top (Sunday & Saturday), Monday is next to Sunday but a bit lower and so on. It is a rounded 1/2 circle till Friday meets Saturday. Every month of the year is on a linear, horizontal line and each month has a color. When it turns January 1st at the stroke of midnight, my mind sees the line doing a 180 and it's back to the beginning of the year as a whole new line all over again. I know this sounds confusing as hell, but it's what I have always seen lol ;)

      Literally just Peppermint Patty. I mean it, she seems tough but always waits for her dad to get home after work and it's usually late at night, so she doesn't get a proper amount of sleep most nights and it's why she falls asleep in class a lot. She doesn't have a mom, where the mom's gone to is unknown. Her dad (and Marcy to an extent, she's not as close to ay of the others, even ol' Chuck) are all she's got, really.

    Man alive --he MADE that character just as much as Charlie Schultz did --right here in the midst of this sound, up she conjures --who who IS that? Why, it's Peppermint Patty! And that last note, oh poor little thing --but look, she's still smiling.

    I love the full sound, thought the quality of the sound isn't the greatest because I know it's live. It has such an epic quality as with all of Guaraldi's work. And he seems to manifest that in all the players . Brevity, efficiency in the melody - not one unnecessary note. I could swear that Guaraldi could have been a mathematician because of the tightness and pure simplicity. It's beautiful is just too pale to describe music like this...

  • @andrewbarrett1537
    @andrewbarrett1537 5 лет назад +13

    I think part of the allure of this tune is what I hear as the very fresh-sounding first theme, attained by going a little further around the circle of fourths than normal in earlier pop music (but really made popular in the rock era): I think they're in the key of F, so F major is the tonic, or I chord. So, the chord progression goes F - Bb - Eb - C sus (or something like that), then to the I6 descending figure with the diminished etc.
    I think the optimism comes from I going to IV, which I think tends to sound 'positive', 'optimistic' and 'spiritual' (hence its frequent use in church music), and then IV going to bVII, which is really just another I-IV, but taken further around the cycle of fourths in that direction. The big surprise is bVII then going to Vsus, as one might half assume it would instead keep going to bIII or something like that.
    great tune, regardless!

      Perhaps you're right but when you don't get this sort of harmonic convergence today, this stands out even more over time. From Charles Schultz to Bill Melendez and Lee Mendelson having the foresight to grab Guaraldi and create something so sustaining for generations...all we get today is self-proclaimed "artists", so-called, that couldn't do anything original if their life depended on it - we are all dying of dehydration here for something which is why we have to keep going to the well. So respect the "thinking" because we aint getting but dumb silence from the music industry now...

    I think what’s unique about Vince is his sound and style of playing instantly connects with people and they can almost immediately tell you it’s Peanuts music although they can’t tell you who is playing.
    My guess is more people have an appreciation for jazz because of Vince than anyone else.
    His music connected with an audience in the jazz world prior but then his work on the Peanuts specials gave so many of us an appreciation for his sound that has lasted decades since.
    If you enjoy any of the Peanuts music check out his prior albums especially “Jazz Impressions Of Black Orpheus” & “Alma-Ville”.

    the pause between the diminished closure and thr applause is so intriguing to me...do they want more? are they afraid to interrupt a continuation? did they quit paying attention? I'd like to see a movie of this performance...
