With a machine that doesn't have a clutch to disengage the sewing portion of the machine I think the best way to wind your bobbins would be while your just sewing if you have two spools of the same thread.

What's the thinnest material you've done with it?
I’ve sewed 1-2 oz chap leather, I’ve also sewed the fake alligator print from Walmart all with no problems.
