In Italy precious items need to have a stamp which tells you how what karat gold or silver, platinum ecc is + a producer stamp released by the local commissioner after a background check. This second stamp tells you exactly who is responsable for the quality of the precious metal. In fact if you see 750 (which stands for 18k) on a gold chain it's usually going to be at least 780 because the producer doesn't want to risk.

Secrets... hollow chains, hollow profiles filled by another metal, including stone weight while selling and subtract while buying, thick plating lower carats gold to pass simple test. And for last that is the biggest crime in the business, selling rhodium plated yellow gold as a white gold.

From the very beginning you said something very true! My parents got lied to many years ago trying to get me a first communion gift. They picked a necklace with an angel pendant. My parents already knew they wanted to get me 14k. And the lady who helped them sold them a gold bonded 14k pendant with a 14k solid chain. They didn’t know that until I looked at the markings carefully and then realized that the pendant is in fact gold bonded. Under the sunlight I can see fading areas of the pendant. But the chain never faded. So yes! To many crooks mixing different things and tricking people! Very well said!

It's true thst many, if not most jewellers are crooks. Years ago I brought a solid 18k gold stud earring to the local jeweler and wanted to buy a matching stud. The jeweler said he couldn't tell what size stud it was, he took it in the back room to measure it and returned with 2 identical earrings. When I left, the earrings matched but they seemed different than original pair. They were the same size, but they seemed lighter... but I shrugged it off, thinking I was imagining it. About 6 months later I brought in a pair of 18 k gold hoop earrings to be repaired. Only one was broken, but he instructed me to leave both earrings with him. When I picked them up, something about them seemed different. My husband couldn't tell, they looked some how different to me. Since this was the second time I felt the jewelry was different, we ended up bringing all the earrings to another jeweler for evaluation. We found that my 18k solid stud was now an 14k hollow earring, (as was the new match) and my 18k gold hoop earrings were now 14 k gold filled hoops. He did a great job making copies, but not perfect. I can't even imagine how much he is stealing swapping stones.

Love this video - for years I sold 10k, 14k & 18k gold chain locks all over NYC, Providence and LA for a leading Italian manufacturer of locks, I knew there were a ton of tricks in the trade especially those little stamps, but didn't know about this test kit - it's true that the general public get duped all over the world, tourist buyers are some of the easiest to fool. The guy in this video has clearly had enough of his competitors knowingly fooling customers and giving the industry a bad name. Good for him for saying it out loud!

They say because it was doing a burning effect. So what can you tell me about this please. Thank you..

    • @mateorichardson6084
      @mateorichardson6084 3 года назад +11

      1. Check stamps, they're usually marked if it is plated
      2. use a fairly powerful magnet. gold isn't magnetic, so if it sticks at all or there is some magnetic pull some other metal is on the inside
      3. scratch really deep on a scratch test to break the plated layer. plating is usually fairly thin
      4. if need be use wire cutters or something to snap the jewelry in half and pour a little bit of acid directly on the snap / use a razor to make a deep etch and pour acid directly on the cut
This is what we do at work to verify authenticity of anything we take in.

I would just bring the kit with me and do it the following way. First you're looking for the piece of jewelry you really want and then give him or her the following deal. If you can do test and the results come in positive, then you make the purchase and the scratch doesn't make any difference. But if you find out that you have been misinformed, then you leave the store immediately because you never do business with those kind of people. They can take it or leave it, some deals are big numbers and just like buying a car. You need to test that thing out.

I am heartbroken, a jeweler I have been dealing with for a number of years tried to cheat me. I have an antique 10k victorian amazing, unmarked, necklace/chain. I had acid tested my piece myself but took it to a jeweler and had it retested. Sure thing it was 10k, he was so impressed with the workmanship. The jeweler I regularly use, I took to him (just had the feeling he was not on the up and up) sure thing he told me my necklace was sterling silver, and when he did the test he poured the acid solution onto the stone, i’m talking about flooded. When I got home I retested and 10k. When you trust someone and you find out they’re not what they seem.

It’s easy. They are both jewelry. Plated is costume jewelry, anything solid gold is a valuable investment piece. Gold is gold is money. US Constitution article 1 section 10. The founding fathers knew what’s up. Calculate the scrap value of the gold and that’s the minimum value of the jewelry. Design and craftsmanship add premium on top of that but not if you are going to sell to a scrapper. Gold plated has a negligible amount of gold so it is costume jewelry.

@@RedShiftedDollar No offence bro, but whatever's in the constitution of the US doesn't apply here. Gold is available all around the world, not just the US.

@@pugfugly1989 You missed my point. I referred to the reason why gold was included in the constitution and not the legal significance of its inclusion. Gold literally cannot be used to settle debts as described in the constitution anyways. But why did the founding fathers select gold out of all the monies they could have chosen instead? There are plenty of ways to settle debts including the way everybody settles them today. Gold was chosen because it is the best commodity money in the world. This is still true today which is why governments and central banks still hold it and continue to acquire more even though it is rarely used to settle any debts. It just sits there in guarded vaults. Why do governments do this with their useless rock collection? It seems kinda stupid doesn’t it? None of this has anything to do with the constitution.

@@RedShiftedDollar Useless rock collection? Guess you have no clue that gold has an intrinsic value as one of the most efficient conductors of electricity, and is therefor highly sought after for computer technology. And again, no one cares about the Founding Fathers, or what the US does. Nixon kicked you guys off the gold standard, which pretty much made everything you're talking about a moot point.

@@pugfugly1989 Silver is a better electrical conductor than gold and is only 25 bucks an ounce. Gold has industrial use, but the property you refer to is not enough to justify the 2k/oz price. Just buy silver if you want a conductor.
Yes, useless rock collection. Have you ever seen a central bank use gold for anything other than storing bricks of it in their basement? Sure there are uses, but bankers don't care about those. It's not like they are front-running the market for electrical contacts.
Gold's ability to sit and do nothing is actually its most valuable intrinsic property. This is what makes it good for long term storage and economic accounting.
And you still don't understand my reference to the constitution... It's not about the US. And besides, your country isn't on the gold standard either.
