How The Dallas Mavericks Rebuilt After Dirk

  • In 2011 Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks to their first championship in franchise history with a massive upset over the Miami Heat. The Mavericks were never able to reach those heights again in the Dirk Nowitzki era and he would eventually retire after the 2018-2019 season. The Mavericks have not been able to win another championship following Dirk's retirement, but they were able get back to the NBA Finals last year and will remain a contender in the Western Conference for years to come. Today we look at how the Dallas Mavericks rebuilt their team following Dirk's departure.

This is full glaze, I won’t deny
I think the game 7 against the suns was not only a game which ended up having a long lasting impact, but also probably THE game which solidified the fact that Luka is probably the coldest player in the entire league.
Everyone knew that he was already a star, but I think it was that series which propelled him into superstar discussion and will ultimately be seen as a legacy defining moment for him when it’s all said and done.

Defense wasn't the issue in the Finals. They held the most efficient offense of all time to under 110 points every game. That should've been enough to make it closer than it was. The problem was the team outside of Luka shot 18% from 3. Klay is a serviceable defender and will get a ton of open looks from Luka. Great addition.

Ridiculous that you guys discounted Dirk's twilight years comparing him unfavorably to Lebron, Steph and KD. Obviously those guys are still balling but Dirk at Steph and KD's current ages was still an allstar scoring over 20 pts. That's not chopped liver. He didn't start falling off until 38. Dirk remains one of the best examples of longevity in NBA history. Let's see how Steph and KD do in their 36-41st years before knocking Dirk down a peg.

Yeah. And as a Mavs fan im really happy with the start. Klay is struggling to find his groove. So is Luka, Who is now hurt. And Kyrie hasn't even been popping off and averging like 30 a game. Were still 9-7. And have had 4 games we lost by 1 possestion. If we won those games we would be 13-3. They are still better overall then last year. They will make it to second round +. Neji Marshall has been an amazing scorer off the bench. He's shown flashes of being a nice rim driver with two way game. I just look at that and wonder what the Mavs could be when Luka gets back to form and Klay finds some chemistry in Dallas. Maybe a 45-15 record? Run to round 3 or 4?

And still. Im overall very happy. And very surprised with how the Mavs have looked so far. They are 9-7. Considering Luka has been slow to start and injured 2 games. Klay hasn't found his groove yet in Dallas. Like that's not bad. And not bad at all when you consider 4 of those L's came in 1 possession games. We would be 13-3 if we had won those 1 posssession games. Neji Marshall looks like everything Dallas needed. A guy who can spark some offense in games where it's needed. While also playing good defense. Klay has shown flashes of that guy who can put up clutch 3s in a game. Grimes as well. Washington looks like a new player. He's shown flashes of a 20 10 star on the wing. When Luka gets back to averaging 30 a game and shooting the ball better. They should be a top 3 seed in west. Also Luka resting is great. They don't need him to average 34 10 9 just to win 50 games. They can let him SIT and still win games against good teams like the Nuggets.

He's maybe not been that yet. But still you gotta consider he's in a new team. He's basically played with the same teammates and coach his whole career, he's now in a place where everything is different for the first time. Some nights like last game vs Denver you can look at his shooting struggles. But to be honest. He's had a lot of empty possesions for Dallas. Like where he just sits in the key or corner and watches the play while having a defender on him. He hasn't really found his role yet. But when he does. He should be a guy who can provide a lot more oppurtunities for Dallas on offense.

Then they land Kevin Love and lose him before they could compete again. And until Ant and KAT came along, you'd still have to look to KG because he's the team's all time leader in almost every category.

Then they got Lively after barely missing out on him and the pick altogether by tanking the last two games of the season
The Mavs should have been on thr same situation as thr Hawks after losing Brunson but good timing and striking when the opportunity is there turned their bleak situation into a finals contender for several years especially if lively continues to develop

Great roster and one of the deepest bench ITL. Also spence, great ball handler and can create shots and clutch and was a huge part of that 2022 WCF run. Also a 7’5 defensive stopper. They were just a few pieces away from beating Boston and I think they’ll be able to this time with hopefully a HEALTHY Luka and Kyrie getting over the hump. Whoever they meet, I think they will beat. The Rebuild didnt start good. The Dallas KP trade to go all in came WAY to soon in my opinion. They shoudlve waited at least till the Summer before making a big move. On paper a 23 year old stretch big who is also a brilliant roll man and rim protector is the perfect partner for Luka! But trading for a 7'3 guy who tore his MCL not one year ago and hasnt played a game since... and then for that price? WAY to much! Btw, we still payed the last piece of that deal this June. Means our 2024 pick went to New York and everything concerning this trade is finally behind us.
That being said, one thing became very clear to me. The problem was never really the Front Office, it was the Influence Cuban had and used. Cuban (and his betting Guru) wanted Green in the 2020 draft, Donnie wanted Bane. Just saying... The Brunson debacle was another big problem. He was willing to sign a 55/4 extension in the summer of 2021 and noone even talked to him, cause Cuban wasnt willing to pay him! Then AFTER he became a starter he asked for the same extension AGAIN in January of 2021. And after they still didnt pay him, and even actively tryed to trade him for a star... THATS when he made his decision to leave Dallas. And rightfully so by the way! Coming from a Dallas fan.
You can clearly see when Cuban started the talks with the new owners early in 2023... cause thats when his influence stopped! The Kyrie Trade was the first decision he wasnt actively involved in. Yes he agreed to the trade, but he didnt negotiate it like he has done in the past. The Bertans+10 for Lively trade, the trade exception for Holmes+24th pick, the Williams signing, then the Williams and Holmes for Gafford/Washington trades during the season... Cuban stayed completely out of it, cause he already knew he wouldnt be the owner anymore. Isnt it strange that basically everything that happened before early 2023 didnt work, but after that they only missed on Williams? And then flipped him immediately for a better piece just half a year after signing him. Something like that would've never happened under Cuban before. Cause then he would have to admit he made a mistake.
Overall this team is in a really great place now for the next view years. Yes, Thompson is a bit old, but still provides exactly what we need. And I think you guys undervalue Marshall and Grimes, or overvalue Jones Jr. What did DJJ do before coming to Dallas? I think Marshall and specially Grimes have already shown more then Jones Jr ever did before 2023/24. And now they will have all the space in the world playing next to Luka and Kyrie. This team is very deep (I would say up to 12 deep if needed) and way younger then people think. Luka/Washington/Gafford/Grimes/Hardy/Lively are all 25 and younger... Add O-Max as a good 3&D talent (lets see if he can be more then a talent) and 26 years old Marshall on a long term deal entering his prime and I feel pretty good about this roster. So this team isnt just built for now, they are prepared for the future as well.

Even Dirk wasn’t normal, dude played 20 seasons and scored over 30k points. With the exception of his very last season he kept up his efficiency, he was always a 20/10 guy based on per 36 and we forget he averaged 20 plus as an allstar at 35, was an allstar again next year at 36, and again at 40. So he played great deep into his 30s like Steph and KD are now.
Nobody is or ever will be like Lebron.

I wouldn't say they did great without hitches. Letting Brunson walk, intentioned tanking on the last game, Grant Williams signing depleted their draft capital for short-term gains. Hard to fault when Luka's on the team that needs to win now/soon.
They however did a remarkable job making up those mistakes with Lively, vet min pickups and last year's mid-season acquisitions.

Not enough credit and importance given to GM Nico Harrison with Mark Cuban handing the reigns over to someone capable at constructing a roster. Turning that tanking 10th pick into the assets they received, while trading away and cutting ties with failed experiments in a timely manner while bringing back undervalued players in huge positions of need addressed Mavericks FO weaknesses that plagued Dirk throughout the entire career. Luka could have had the rosters that Dirk had but Nico was the change that seems to be getting them over the hump

I've wanted to see Luka Doncic win a championship since I saw game 4 of the Mavericks vs Clippers round 1 playoffs in 2020, and it's for that reason why I'm still not 100% sure about the Klay signing. It's easy to tell that Luka, Kyrie and Klay aren't the best defenders in the league and it can be argued that the Celtics beat them in the finals last season because the Celtics are just a deeper defensive team overall. So, having three defensive liabilities in the starting lineup doesn't appease me for the Mavericks this upcoming season, but hopefully their collective defense is in a high spot by the time the playoffs start.

Mavs don't deserve credit at all Luka is just a generational carry. I love how everyone flipped because they made one finals. They squandered Brunson and then shamelessly tanked when they could have easily made the playoffs and lucked into Lively. Good pick but lucky because the Mavs weren't trying to be bad until the end. Kyrie blew up the Nets and lowered his value and Mavs lucked into him as well, not to mention he's usually not this healthy or well behaved. PJ Washington and Gafford were great moves, but the Mavs have mainly surrounded Luka with mediocre teams and have just gotten lucky, but Luka winning and Kidd turning into decent coach is saving the Mavs from criticism

Thank you. It's not about DJJ, it's about Luka. He makes every player look better than they actually are.
DJJ had the best season of his entire career in Dallas. Most points, highest 3p%, most dunks, most everything around the board. And it's all because he had the privilege to play with Luka.
Look where DFS is right now. He was one of the most important pieces in Mavs squad and now he is a bench player on one of the worst teams in the league.
Spence had the best season of his career in Dallas then fell back to mediocre when he left.
Luka even made Powell a starting center for 4-5 years when we all know he would be the 3 option at best on any PI team in the league.
Even Kai played the most games in a season because he was playing next to Luka and enjoyed playing with him and not concentrating on all the other 💩 surrounding him.
And as good as DLive is, he wouldn't have this kind of breakthrough rookie season if Luka wasn't spoonfeeding him those ally ops the entire season. That made him more confident and made him a better two way big than he would be on any other team.
It all starts and ends with Luka in Dallas.
