It's worth fixing. I did several of these last year and they all paid off well. People want them for use around their camps on the lakes in upper state N.Y. Thanks

No matter what everyone thinks it's your mower you check on the cost, then determine if you want to invest in it or use it for parts.
    Great info. Thank you.

I have 3 of them. I use them for mowing where I’ve never mowed before.

I think it's salvageable; the flywheel guard should be good with a few spot welds. I am curious about how the blade was installed. There's usually some detents or alignment pins to ensure the blade is centered and secured to the blade adapter. It sounds like this mower may be the exception to that norm.

      @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE  Год назад +3

you are correct and since you asked, they tried to use a universal blade, on the wrong adaptor. So it's off center and not engaging the studs in the adaptor.

Sometimes the value of the parts exceed the value of the machine. Fun needing a part and knowing you both have it and right where it is.

I remember that Murray mowers from back in the day had three different colors for their mowers red green and Black each of those colors are for the different models that they made

There's always something to be done and this one is an easy fix. The blade will have to be dealt with anyway and the guard too. Blessings

Keeping those cheap broken mowers on hand for parts help with the replacement costs, especially for the hard to find parts.

If you've got a welder, that's how I'd fix the flywheel guard. I doubt the crankshaft is bent, but easy enough to determine.

IMO the shroud is fixable, though a parts donor engine would be better. I have a similar (550EX) engine here but it needs an oil sump, I’m waiting for another basket case to show up so I can repair it. Sooner or later one is bound to turn up!

I replaced one using a parts mower. It is a bit of a pain because you need to reseal the breather and getting the replacement one off without damaging it is tricky.

    • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

yes you are correct, the guard is sealed and getting off is a real pain.

I think it's worth fixing, the guard could be welded, the engine does run and sound good.

I could only make a worthless guess about the worthiness of saving the mower at this point. I can only render an assessment that enough is known which makes it practical to continue analysis and evaluation.

I know me I would either buy the part or just hold onto the mower till I got one like it. At least it had a good engine and started right up!

  • @brianking1138

I had to replace that guard on a mower once. Luckily I had a used one from a blown up engine. The 550 series have very low quality parts.

It doesn’t get much lower end than this. I think you’ll save more by using it as a parts mower than you’d make fixing and selling. Not to mention your time could be better spent on something a little more lucrative.
    Cheers

Parts, unless you have another parts mower to borrow from. The time involved in welding weak and fatigued steal would be a waste. ~ MHO.
