There's so many Spider Man games and media out there, and the oldest are the classic beat em ups games that were some of the first comic and game crossovers. Speaking of crossovers, I'm joined by Continue as we do our Maximum Carnage review.

In this single-player side-scrolling beat 'em up (with a format similar to Double Dragon and Final Fight), the player controls Spider-Man and Venom through various levels to stop the supervillain Carnage and his team, as well as hundreds of criminals they inspire in their wake, from taking over the city. The game, based on the comic book story arc of the same name, features numerous heroes, including Spider-Man, Venom, and their allies from the Marvel Comics fictional universe like Captain America, Black Cat, Iron Fist, Cloak and Dagger, Deathlok, Morbius and Firestar, all teaming up to battle an onslaught of villains led by Carnage, including Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin and Carrion.

It was nice to see you guys here in the vid, but in future collab projects, I think you should really try to showcase your natural chemistry and comedic wit rather than do this weird, awkward, stilted, forced, scripted stuff. I love you guys, I've been watching your show for many, many years, but this video made you guys seem kinda cringey and lame when in reality you're incredibly cool and hilarious. Maybe you could do it the way they script certain comedic actors in films, where they're given certain beats to hit but are otherwise given free reign to improvise and be themselves. Your show deserves more attention and I want collabs to bring that for you, so I offer this constructive criticism out of love, not hate. You guys shine when you're improvising and playing off of each other naturally. Play to that strength, because it's a HUGE strength. Love and respect!
The music in this game is SO good. I don't know if it's just nostalgia but I love it.
A legit rock group called green jelly composed it. You're right it's great

The sound chip utilization in this game is up there with rock & roll racing, mighty morphin power rangers, super metroid, and a few others.
The sound of spideys webs shooting out are on point. The swell, the zip, the *peeeewwww*

I love this Games 16-bit rendition of The Mob Rules by Black Sabbath
The fact that they call the music “generic” in this review is a shame. These songs are as catchy as all hell. I still get them stuck in my head to this day.
I have never played it and I am loving this music throughout the episode so no, not just nostalgia.
Just as an FYI, best way to beat Carnage is just to constantly keep swapping between Spider-Man and Venom because they have i-frames upon switching in.

I had the red cartridge as well thought is so cool. The game sucked to me though and was incredibly hard for my 7 year old self
@@trinidad510 oh yeah, it was hard, my teenage ass struggled with it for a while, but then i learned how to cheese my way through Richard Reed's Lab Boss and i was able to work on getting the rest of the way through the game.
Did the sequel come with a colored cartridge too? I can't remember.

Continue finally getting some love. Their channel is so small despite the good content they have put out throughout the years. I remember watching the Space weed episode the day it came out.
I still watch them religiously. It blows my mind that their channel hasn't exploded. They're consistently hilarious.

Hearing that first level guitar riff sent shivers like you wouldn't believe down my spine and brought tears to my eyes. Such a nostalgic game for.
This game is fantastic and totally captures what it was like to be a Spidey fan in the 90’s. I’m tired of seeing everyone give it a bad rap these days. It’s certainly tough as hell but so are Megaman games. Take time, study the enemy patterns and strike when you have an open window. Pretty standard stuff for this kind of game.
It still feels so sweet today to be able to pull off double KO maneuvers with Spidey and Venom. And that feeling you get when your back is against the wall with enemies surrounding you on all sides and you call on Firestar to light em all up is pretty hard to duplicate. On top of the gameplay it’s fun to see how much detail the programmers were able to fit into the 16-bit motion comic cutscenes.
While it is unfortunate that it doesn’t have a 2 player mode, that wasn’t all that uncommon back then. It was simple enough to take turns playing levels whenever a friend wanted to jump in. And if that’s your biggest issue with this game then just play it’s sequel “Separation Anxiety”. It allows for a two player Spidey-Venom team up right from the start.
The only other game I’ve played that comes as close to having a good time with Spider-man is one that barely even gets mentioned these days, “Ultimate Spider-man”. It’s still a shame that game never got a sequel.
I love this game. I have the Genesis version and I still play it every so often. Though I’m pretty sure I’ve only ever beaten it once. It’s brutally difficult.
I do remember having beaten it once back on the SNES. Maybe even twice. But it is brutally difficult as you said, and I have not beaten it since.
I remember waiting for carnage attack animations to end while only being able to punch once or twice in between, took forever, thought I would never beat that game

This was the first game that I beat. If you know a little bit about the comics or I looked into the comics the threat of carnage was in the game at all times because you didn't know when Carnage would show up. He was mind controlling people that's why you're fighting against random goons. Spider-Man was fighting on the injury so that time he got knocked out by goons and cloak and dagger came to rescue was perfect. This game left me feeling that spiderman and the heroes gave everything to beat carnage. And the end how carnage was dancing around laughing at you perfect ending.. The only thing I wished is if it was longer , but genesis cartridges probably used have the game space for carnage just laughing.
Me and my Dad used to play this when I was a little kid. Such a great game.
What if there was a remake of this game? added co-op feature to play Spidey n Venom or the extra heroes, a revamped story with animated cutscenes, or making the enemy and boss ai easier for newbies, more extras in the secret room like bonus gallery goods (BTS concept art, promotional art)

speaking of Carnage. in 2002, Universal Haunted Horror Nights had a Carnage themed haunted house called Maximum Carnage. Universal almost got sued by Marvel because they killed off a bunch of heroes off violently, like Cap covered in blood, Armless Wolverine, and a decapitated Spider-Man.

Green Jelly snuck so many songs into the soundtrack, and I"m surprised that no one got sued over it.
When you summon Captain America, it plays Peter's Escape theme from Dawn of the Dead, and it took me years to realize it.

My dad had this on sega genesis when I was 3, this and Mk were my first video games I ever played, I’d get my dad to run through the Spider-Man parts so I could play as venom
I liked this game but Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety is where it was at. Actual co-op and an even better soundtrack. Always had a lot of fun playing it with friends.
I still play this game till this day on my laptop. Me and my brothers love this version
I have this game for Genesis..I struggled beating this until was 21. Afterwards I drank heavily and brought a cake as a celebration. I celebrated for this an Ex-Mutants!

Maximum carnage was the first game I ever bought with my own money for Sega Genesis

Sid Meier's Pirates: Gold Edition for Genesis was my first purchase, bought it at a used game store after SEGA Channel ended.
I distinctly remember fighting in some Underground area as a kid and that is as far as I've ever gotten in Maximum Carnage, I always loved this game though.

If I recall correctly, you can get an extra life if you make a double web grab on the first level, when two enemies appear at the same time from both ends of the screen.
Back in the day this game WAS MY JAM!!! It's the reason Venom/Eddie Brock is my favorite Marvel character(s).
This game was made by LJN and happened to be their best title, that's why it's good. Because they managed to make one single great game that didn't absolutely fucking suck

I love Iron Fist. Steel Serpent comes to mind as IF's arch villain. Also Sabretooth from X-Men made his debut as an Iron Fist villain.

Definitely a nice surprise...I just wish it was handled better. The 'Tinue boys are amazingly funny, but this made them seem so awkward and unfunny. They need to be given the freedom to improvise and play off each other the way they do on their own show; this weird, stilted, scripted stuff does not work for them.
this is the game that got me into spiderman. i do remember being angry and frustrated a lot on how difficult it really was. But putting that aside, it was one of my favorites on the genesis. I liked it better than its sequel Separation Anxiety.

I rented this game a couple times. The Marvel Genesis games I owned were the X-Men game, and the Spider-Man and X-Men game.
To be fair, Carnage is definitely "Prepare to die" mode in the comics. Lol

I always got nervous when playing as Venom since his health is constantly dropping and you have to eat people and I was completely lost with the story since I only knew 1994 cartoon's lore and Sam Raimi movies but I had no idea about the Ultimate continuity.
The soundtrack on the SNES version was amazing.

It kinda blows my mind that this was a game not based on a movie or cartoon, but on a then relatively recent comic arc. That's something you could only do in the second heyday of comics in the early to mid 90s. That's like if Insomniac's next Spider-Man game is an adaptation of the recent Sinister War comic storyline.
Amen. Not like most modern arcs, at least Spider-Man wise, are worthy of an adaptation though…

I disagree with the review. Loved this game! Loved the branching areas and secret areas you could do as Spidey or Venom. Loved seeing all the cast of NPC heroes and villians you meet along the way. The only thing wrong with the game is it’s missing co-op. BUT everything was great. You could def cheese the the girls at the end of the first stage and in a couple of other instances by hopping off the wall and hitting them with the double web attack that KO’s both of them in one hit with the overhead smash. You can do that to a couple of enemies if they’re spaced correctly. Anyway I love this game and one of the few times I disagree with the video review.
Might have been only the PAL-Version, i would have to look it up, but i know there was co-op. Also our cartridges were just basic grey :(

Easily one of my most completed games of all time. Probaby beat it 30 times and some of them were without losing a single life.
The 1st boss fight against the girls can be defeated in 1 hit. Throw the newspapers away before they show up. When they do show up use a double smash on them and they will get ko'd in 1 hit. If you miss just make sure you don't hit them any other way and try again.
This trick can also be done on the 2 dudes with umbrella's but it's harder to do on them.
Anyone still remember the original review where Jirard pronounced Carnage as “carnahj”
This game just goes to show that even the best and most beloved ideas can be ruined if you leave it in the care of a bunch of Laughin' Jokin' Numbnuts.

FYI AFAIK Green Jellÿ is pronounced 'Jello'. From Wikipedia:
"Green Jellÿ is an American comedy rock band formed in 1981. I always confuse this with the other venom and spiderman game Seperation Anxiety. That was actually two players. Other than that still pretty similar
Jirard is quite literate with the new games, and I totally respect that. But I love it when he talks retro games.

I still love to listen to the theme by Green Jelly every now and then. They released an actual version with lyrics that's pretty awesome. CARNAGE RULES.
Also, part of why the game was frustrating hard is because LJN, The Rainbow of Shit as AVGN would call it, was associated with it. The Genesis version says it's from Acclaim, while SNES says LJN... but both area really LJN as Acclaim I believe bought out LJN while this was in production.
LJN was an offshoot of Acclaim, from the start.
HE DID IT, HE SAID CARNAGE CORRECTLY THIS TIME!
There was a spiderman game before this on genesis, simply titled spiderman. And if you played in hard, venom appears as early as the first level as a secret mini boss.
Also let's not forget about spiderman for MS DOS. One of those so bad it's hilarious games. Spiderman fights r2d2, gorilla, and at one point flies sideways through space on sparkles...also his skin melts off when you take damage. There's even a glitch that let's you bewt the game in under 18 seconds lol
Maximum Carnage is an awesome video game on the Super Nintendo and this is a great episode of the completionist
