Imagine this in the 1700’s in some wooden ship just sitting below deck and hoping to not sink.

Some of us walk outside in hurricanes. Being on a boat in one is a completely different story.

I’m sure that ship was designed to take on ferocious conditions like that. To be honest one of the biggest dangers here for the crew might be a lightning strike. That’s a really nasty lightning storm!

Listening to maritime disaster channels, you hear about this, but it's another to see it. The frame of reference is honestly terrifying. Props to these sailors who brave the seas for so little recognition

When I was in the Navy in 1989 we went around a hurricane that was in between Hawaii and the west coast of California. The swells were 30 to 35 ft with a couple of 50ft waves at times. I cannot lie mu butt hole was sealed up like a Duck's ass! I definitely have a huge respect for the power of the ocean it showed me how small and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of life on this planet!!!

Wow amazing, yet terrifying.
I remember a ferry crossing out to Shetland years back. I'm fairly used to sea crossings and have been out on deck many times in conditions like this. Im ex-navy too. But my fiancé at the time spend months worrying about how scary the crossing was going to be. We had bought some craft work stuff in Aberdeen for him to do while on holiday. Now once we'd left the Pentland Firth a storm brewed up and i was out of the cabin leaving him to do his craft stuff. I made friends with locals who did the journey many times. We all started to get worried and even the steward in the bar received a phone call to remove all the glassware and our whisky bottle had to be decanted into plastic cups. Captain put out regular messages to be alert and ready. Ships smashed about. I checked on my fiancé and he was asleep. The next morning the captain woke us up to get ready for breakfast before disembarking saying Breakfast was on him because of the storm we had experienced. My fiancé just said "what happened?"

This is by far the creepies ship video i've ever seen and it gives a fascinating insight into what it could have been like for ships lost in this weather. (El Faro, Edmund Fitzgerald etc.)
That would be scary not knowing when a big wall of water is coming with enough force to crush anything in sight
But they do know because all the technology they have on the boat if your going against the wind you will be fine waves dont just change direction like that its not random lol

Better to be on the ocean during big swells but not during a full blown hurricane. The boat could be lifted up and flung around crashing against rocks, coral reefs and/or other boats in the area. Almost impossible to control a boat if the winds are 74+ miles an hour and through driving rain. The ocean water is getting sucked up and thrown at the windshield in buckets as the rain comes pouring down. Visibility is zero.
On land, there are obstacles that slow/break the winds down, but there is no slowing or breaking the wind on the open ocean. Boats get tossed and thrown quickly. You're really screwed if it's at night. You just hope you can pull out of the storm before your boat becomes an airplane.

Just wanted to check and make sure I didn't want to go out on the ocean at night. This made sure.
If anyone is interested in what they are talking about.
Lightning stuck the ship, and they lost the VRU "vertical reference unit."
The VRU is tied into the DGPS navigation system. The ships computer uses this equipment to keep the ship stationary, adjust heading, and keep the ship from rolling while external forces such as wind and waves are applied. It doesn't look like they are in open water hence the waves not being that high. The most dangerous aspect would be if the ship were to strike or run into something.
Assuming this video released just after this storm occurred. This was Hurricane Delta 2020.
Delta was the 25th tropical system in the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season. This Major Hurricane peaked as a 140mph 953mbar Category 4 in the NW Caribbean before moving into the Gulf of Mexico as a hurricane, striking Louisiana just a few days later.

You sure that's not a squall line? I don't see much lightning in hurricanes. You really need ice in the atmosphere to make lightning, especially like that, and hurricanes are warm systems even at high altitudes.

I've seen lightning like that in a hurricane. It only lasts a few minutes at most though and it's in very few locations. Nonetheless it's still basically a hurricane with winds THAT strong.
Unless this was a coast guard or other military grade vessel, I’d have trouble relaxing the whole time.
