    I operated a container ship in pirate waters from 2004 through 2010. In 2005 we were alarmed to see a report from the International Maritime Bureau that there were 3 attempted boardings in a week. That was later surpassed by 5 attempts a day in the following years. The insurance industry wrote a letter demanding the world’s navies do something. A western military spokesman said that they can’t be responsible for 6,000 square miles of ocean and that ships had to protect themselves. The insurance companies responded by voiding any policy where the crew was armed - it’s better to pay out a small ransom than for the pirates to view the crew as an obstacle and then have to pay 20 death benefits. The international community later established the IRTC where navy ships could respond to a vessel being attacked (if they felt like responding) - I’m not kidding.
    When I was home I would tell my friends about the piracy threat. They were shocked to hear and wondered why it wasn’t in the news. I said, because an American ship hasn’t been hit yet. Then in 2009 the Maersk Alabama was attacked and we all began to know about piracy in the 21st century. In 2010 I went through pirate water twice a month and there was at least one mayday every transit, but I had 10 meters of freeboard and could do 23kts. Those poor bastards with 5 meters of freeboard and could only do 13kts were screwed.
    I once was turning north into the Red Sea when I saw a thousand small skiffs milling about and a German frigate leaving the Red Sea at dusk. I called the frigate and asked, don’t you see all these skiff and that dusk is a time for pirate attacks. The frigate responded that the skiffs appeared to be fishing. The ship I just passed sent out a mayday an hour later and was taken by pirates.
    It may have gotten better, but it really sucked for us at one time.

      @@WorldxTracer That wasn’t an option at the beginning. The original recommendations was to stay 75 miles offshore, then 100, then 200 and then 600 because they started using mother pirate boats. We followed best practices to harden our vessel with fire hoses and nets to deflect being boarded. My advantage was speed and freeboard, until one day we blew a lubricating injector off the #7 cylinder and had to stop just South of Aden Yemen. I notified UKMTO of my situation and doubled my lookouts. We were dead in the water for the hour it took to make the repair and a bit of time to get 70,000 tons back up to speed, all the time looking out for a little boat that could close on us in 20 minutes. We lucked out as it was a mildly rough day at sea so the pirates weren’t around. I was buzzed by a U.S. Navy P3-Orion while the engineers made quick repairs, which made me feel very proud. UKMTO posted that ships with speeds greater than 15kts and freeboard greater than 8 meters hadn’t been boarded, so the low and slow vessels were at greatest risk.

      Not to mention, it would enrage the Somalis even further. Moral and legal complications to follow, considering (whether on what to believe or if its true or not) that these foreign fishing companies are what led to that issue in the first place because no one's patrolling the waters due to the civil war (though that couldn't be the only factor at play here)

      Somali piracy is dead, and has been for years. The UN anti privacy action also lowered the pressure from illegal fishing in Somali waters and the fish has actually come back a little, thus fishing is actually an option now for the people with boats.

Bad luck for the pirates but at least the ship's crew wouldn't have to kill anyone. A powerful narrow beam microwave emitter could also be a viable alternative.

    Your comparison of asking teachers to carry firearms is an interesting comparison. In both cases the idea is not to simply arm all teachers or in this case all crew members. The idea is make training available and anyone who has completed training, or who has prior police or military experience can choose to carry a firearm. In addition you would also hire specific security personnel for this purpose and to oversee ongoing training. One reasonably trained sniper would be a hell of a deterrent.

    Also for one way journeys or if the ship only hired for part of their route, once nearing the last port the security guards would just chuck the weapons overboard into the ocean just before entering sovereign waters, ride the ship into port and take a flight back home. cost of the weapons would be built into the fees.

    I hear a lot of dumb and expensive ideas here. Far easier to overcome what ever road blocks and have the ship's crew armed with the same stuff as pirates for a fraction of the cost. Instead of $millions to install pumps and spray nozzles all over a ship. A couple of M67 frag grenade , tied to a 3/8 nylon rope so it stays 10,12 ft above the water and explode there will discourage boarding, and unhealthy for the people on the boats near the ship, while the crew can throw it under cover. Ship's crew can also have RPG-7, and grenade launchers (the ones with grenades on belts like a machine gun) and up to 50 cals, so they can shoot back. If pirates see you have RPG-7, they keep out of range, which is good for tankers. Frag grenades will not harm a ship , with inch thick steel sides. RPG also works great on helicopters trying to land on the deck.

    • @lorscarbonferrite6964
      @lorscarbonferrite6964 10 месяцев назад +3

      I think part of the issue is just the cost of having personnel trained in using firearms vs how frequently they actually need to use firearms. Somebody who does not train regularly will not be effective in a small arms firefight, it doesn't matter what gun you give them. Now, maybe with heavy machine guns you can start to offset lack of training with sheer rate of fire, but the downside to using that approach is that you need a large stockpile of ammo to make use of it. For instance, the Browning M2 consumes 7.5 rounds a second at minimum. So, if a cargo ship were to use that strategy, they'd need to purchase a lot of ammo (and make sure it's all reliable), find some secure but readily accessible place on board to store it, train crew members on how to handle and properly store all that ammo, train crew members on how to operate an HMG, and make sure that the ammo in the stockpile remains reliable.
      No matter how you slice it, equipping the crew on the ship with weapons (including ones mounted on the ship) is a massive cost in training and logistics (and that's not even gonna be the entire cost). Hiring dedicated armed security personnel is likely the better option, but that's also going to be quite expensive, possibly even more expensive depending on how many security personnel there are going to be. Now, maybe all of these costs would be justified if piracy was an everyday occurrence, but it really isn't. It's only a problem in certain areas. The better option is to just contract a external PMC or armed security company to defend the ship while its in pirate-infested waters, which shipping companies do actually do fairly regularly.

      @@lorscarbonferrite6964 Most police in the US never use their firearm. Ever. Yet they are trained on how to use them.
      Lets talk about costs. They avoid the highly pirated water by going around Africa. For a round trip this increases fuel by $1 million alone. What was a little over a month 1 way trip, just increased by an extra month. Cargo ships normally take 4 round trips between SE Asia and Europe. To go around Africa, they would be lucky to do 3 trips. So they make less trips, and each trip costs a lot more. Now, you are saying it will cost the shipping companies more to go the extra distance, while shipping a lot less, than to spend a hundred thousand to arm the ships?
