- Yoshi's voice is really iconic, right? But go back to the 1990s, and Yoshi had a totally different, and also very iconic voice! So, why did Nintendo change Yoshi's voice - and where did his original voice from Super Mario World even come from? Let's answer the question of why Yoshi doesn't sound like he used to!

Yeah im surprised too! I didnt know british people spoke english.
No way
Mind blowing. Always thought he speaked Portuguese up to this point

He can't, he can only speak British.
I think when we think of Yoshi, we all immediately think of his iconic voice from Mario is Missing where he racks up tons of globulator miles looking for him
In some alternate universe where that game flew off store shelves, that might well be the case.
Not me. I played Mario kart on the old system and I played as Yoshi quite a bit.

I agree. Both of those sounds are Yoshi sounds! Lol

Isnt it the same sound when you jump on him in NSMB. I swear he makes that sound everytime you hop on to him. Its either that or when he pops out of his egg.

why would he do that when you don't jump on then
As a music producer finding out yoshi's sound is made from an orchestra hit + pitch bend is just pure gold. I'm going to make that

There was one game that used both Kondo's soundss and Totaka's voice: Yoshi's Island on the GBA. In that game, Totaka's voice replaced most of Yoshi's sounds from the SNES game, EXCEPT the sound Yoshi makes when you retrieve Baby Mario, onto Yoshi's back.
I wonder if that's why I never took the original two-note sound as a voice. All the obvious vocalizations were Totaka's voice, the Kondo sound just seemed like the sound that happens when you sit on Yoshi.
7:14 so this is where weegee came from
Totaka's voice lines are so perfect that Nintendo's still using his clips after 25+ years, that's peak character sound design!

I can’t wait for the Mario Bros . Movie 2 it’s all about yoshi he is so cute
Interestingly, in Super Mario Galaxy 2, even though Yoshi uses his updated voice, he makes the classic voice when Mario takes a seat on his saddle!
I'm almost entirely certain thats just a mounting yoshi sound, not a voice clip
@@lybon6972 yeah I always thought it was supposed to be the sound of his saddle

@TMCS I read that when it happened in the video
Same here. I just thought of it as a sound effect or "theme" of sorts for Yoshi.
Yoshi probably tired of Mario abandoning him💀💀💀💀
Hearing Yoshi's voice clips unedited was *so* surreal! 😂

Puberty hit him like a truck.
There's something very endearing to how Japanese producers go out of their way to bring back the same voice actors to reprise their roles for characters they've voiced several years ago.
Ironically I feel like Yoshi in Mario Galaxy 2 actually sounds younger than in Yoshi's Story. Maybe Totaka was overcompensating for his age a bit in his delivery or in the effects they put on it. Either way it still sounds great
I never knew that Yoshi's voice was pitched up. I always thought it was recorded as is

Does it really sound that much more complex than that though?
@TMCS man you sound like a weeb who just learned like 3 words in Japanese. Saying the same things over and over without stopping
And it worked!
4:37 yoshi voice is just so good and funny they should add it back to the new versions 😂
The German Version is really good. But there are 2 Version of Yoshi. The first Version: Yoshi speak like a old person.
On the second Version: Yoshi speak like young person .
(Sorry for my English)
It's fucking awful
I think it would have been cool if all yoshi's had different single sound they made indifferent tones and the different tone patterns were the language. And that original orchastral hit was the main yoshi's noise.
i like that it was a musician who was coming up with those sounds. It adds a quality to them I think. I'm also glad despite the cartoons, that Nintendo never went the real vocal route with him. He's Yoshi, Part of his whole thing is being a dinosaur and being part of a originally isolated race. it makes more sense for him to have these more basic sounds.
Yoshi's Story also has some songs where the Yoshis are singing, so that may have played a part in it.
That's a good point, I'd forgotten that.
It’s also “cuter” that way. I assume there’s similar reason for Pokemon not speaking human languages (with the exception of Meowth… and a couple of others).
@@vincent67239 I would say that's probably a fair bet.
@@vincent67239 which ones besided mewtwo and entei :o? I've been quite outdated

And Yoshi's voice in the old TV show sounds in line with what I would expect from Yoshi too.
@TMCS Every thread tho?

At 7:42, did Yoshi and Mario really just shake hands using opposite hands? That had to have been the most awkward handshake ever…
DAMN
Even if he doesn’t verbally say it and it’s only text dialogue but I like how Yoshi himself is one of the few if only member of his species able to speak English because of how long he’s been around Mario as we see in Mario rpg.
I was actually pretty upset, when Yoshi's Island was re-released on Game Boy Advanced and they actually changed the old voice from Yoshi's Island to the new one from Yoshi's Story. I'm okay with some progress over the years, some things may change. But re-releasing a classic and change some remarkable parts just because it fits newer games is not cool. Let the classics be classic!

He's also had his voice updated with new sound clips ever since Mario Strikers charged. I think it's more prominent in games like Super Mario Party, Mario Party Superstars, Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Golf Super Rush, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
And Super Mario Odyssey
There are probably more than enough Yoshi voice clips in all of Nintendo video games with the Kazumi Totaka Yoshi voice for Nintendo to assign them to at least *_*12*_* different Yoshi characters - each with their own skin and shoe colour! (This is one of the reasons why I made the other different-coloured-Yoshis comment in the Comments section of this RUclips video.)

Of course it is that particular pitch and speed is literally impossible without editing
On the whole "nes was too weak for yoshi" thing, it should be noted that the hackrom Super Mario Bros 3 Mix, which can be played in a retail NES/famicon in a cartridge, has a fully functional yoshi in it.

It's surprising how deep this video goes. I'm totally floored learning the SNES just straight up had no default soundfont and instead used exclusively samples. Makes sense, I've never heard two SNES games that sound the same.
Soundfonts as a format aren't really used in consoles, I'm pretty sure most consoles (GBA, N64, NDS etc.) just use custom imported samples. The SNES and N64 (and others as well) did have an SDK (Sound Development Kit) that had some prebuilt sounds which were used in multiple games.
Damn, is this the reason why the SNES has so many classic soundtracks? I swear, some of the best video game music, and just music in general, came from the SNES

I personally prefer the original noise he made in Super Mario World. The baby babbling noises were cute for Yoshi's Story, since you're playing as babies in that game, but it's a bit more baffling when used for the adult Yoshi, who can canonically speak full sentences in English (or whatever language the Mushroom Kingdom speaks).
Thanks for these videos! Keep it up!

I belive Totaka also recorded new lines for Mario Strikers. The game features a lot of fun and expressive voice clips. Some of which we haven't heard outside of the strikers games.
Not just Strikers, a lot of spinoffs since strikers have had new voice clips recorded for them.
I've always wondered how much he sped up the recordings to sound like Yoshi, but I'm glad they're not endlessly reusing the same voice clips, MK8 Yoshi finally had some unique voice lines again for instance :P (afaik at least)
