I’m this case, there’s a lot of issues that can’t be absolved through independence. First, there’s the limited population and limited places you can live. A country needs to sustain itself and with 56,000 people it’s pretty difficult to do that. 2. There’s the issues that plague indigenous peoples everywhere…Generational trauma, alcoholism, neglect, etc. How are broken people dependent on Denmark going to do that? 3…there’s nothing. It’s just a very hard place.

@@flo2677 The main problem is that about a quarter of Greenland's GDP is the annual block grant from Denmark.
(This is also roughly equivalent to two thirds of Greenland's entire government budget.)
As per the self-rule law of 2009, Greenland can declare independence after a referendum, but right now Greenland does not have the financial stability without the Danish block grant to become independent without a significant decrease in living standards.
So it's a lot more complicated than just "Denmark doesn't want to let Greenland go" - The ball is in Greenland's court at this point, "all" they have to do is hold a referendum, and then declare independence.
The question is how to do it without crippling themselves, and there's a bit of debate about what the best way of gaining the financial strength to survive independent is, and whether they should pull the trigger immediately without preparation.

    • @flo2677
      @flo2677 9 месяцев назад +6

@@XCC23 That's factually wrong. Greenland has the legal right to start negotiating for independence, Denmark can withdraw from that as Danish law states that Copenhagen must approve the independence. As of now that will NEVER happen as Greenland is strategically important for Denmark and the EU. Especially when China and Russia is on the rise. That way of idealist thinking died at the moment Russia invaded Ukraine. Greenland will NEVER get independence, that i can assure you.

The misunderstood facts comes from Greenland having had (and some places still have) big issues with substance abuse, mental illness, violence (DV was high in stats at one point) and suicide. But since Greenland is a very small country, citizen number wise, the statistics are kinda painting a worse picture then it is. But there is issues in Greenland, and many of them are Denmarks fault. No she is not. Please check ALL the facts that she omitted. Greenland admitted years ago that they could not survive without Denmark and all the money we post into Greenland. She also "forgot" to mention that around 80% of the greenlanders in Denmark are homeless, addicts and alchoholics. We have special shelters for them and social workers who specialize in them. Those who achieve a higher education quite often remain in Denmark as they much prefer Denmark to their own country.
Why is she in Denmark if we are racists. Why not go back and fight for independence. But no, she like so many of her compatriots prefer the higher standard of living in Denmark. She is a hypocrite.

@@amafriends9152 She is a hypocrite. Greenland had the choice years ago to become independent of Denmark and they turned it down, as they realised they could NOT survive without Denmark in almost every aspect. They voted to stay with Denmark. Denmark gives more than $500,000 every year to Greenland - directly. There are only 51,000 greenlanders in Greenland and 20,000 in Denmark.
The doctors and nurses in Greenland are Danish for the majority, not to mention all those patients who are flown to Denmark to receive treatment - free of costs for them. She probably had her education in Denmark which we paid for. Maybe she she even got admittet on the special arrangement for greenlanders where she did not have to comply with the requirements that applies to everybody else. A lot of the teachers in Greenland are Danish, and the same goes for the police, the municipality etc etc - merely because the people of Greenland are not educated and interested.
As for the racism. Yes they experience exclusion and racism in Denmark but they do the exact same thing to the Danish people in Greenland. But she will probably deny that as it does not suit her narrative.
About 80% of the greenlanders in Denmark are alcoholics, addicts and homeless. Some of them even come here because the beer, the booze and cigarettes are way cheaper than in Greenland. We have special shelters and special social workers for them as they are a difficult group to work with.
Independence. Absolutely. Go for it. It will save Denmark for a lot of money and trouble. But she would have to let go of the victim role which she seams to enjoy.
As a fun fact. The Faroe Island some years ago also wanted independence from Denmark, which they were granted. They changed their opinion the very moment they discovered that they would no longer receive any funds from Denmark. They admittec that they would be unable to fend for themselves without Denmark and they are doing much better than Greenland.

Besides, there is a lack of infraestructure, which can be really expensive to build. Perhaps you could ecourage private investment by creating public-private partnerships and lowering taxes? My understanding is that the relationship is basically that Greenland would like independent in theory, but don’t want to give up the subsidies from Denmark.
Greenland is about 4X the size of an average country, but has fewer than 60,000 people, which could present huge challenges in maintaining infrastructure and public services without any outside assistance.

Greenland can at any time vote to go independent on its own. And yes you are exactly right, they just don’t want to lose the benefits, yet they always complain.
Greenlandic students coming to Denmark are always treated so much better than danes, and get like 3x the education subsidy.

Just to expand a bit here. Since a 2009 Self-Rule-Law Greenland can declare full independence if a majority of the population of Greenland vote for this to happen.
A 2016 poll showed that 64% want independence.
A 2017 poll showed that 78% dont want indpendence if it means a fall in living standards.
A big part of Greenlands government budget (two thirds I think ?) comes from Denmark.
I think as soon as Greenland has made itself economically independent of Denmark it will declare independence right away.
I support an independent Greenland 😊

Greenland does not seek independence because it lacks the population to sustain it. Most Danes are fine with this arrangement, as it allows them to save money on Denmark that would otherwise be spent on Greenland. It is worth noting that Greenlanders vote for the political party that benefits them with the most money and benefits from Denmark. So it's not like they are not trying to distance themselves too much from Denmark and live on their own.

i think people who vie for Greenland independence forgets that 20% of their entire economy is based solely around subsidies from Denmark, roughly $500 million. And that the Danish Sirius patrol is the only thing that is keeping other countries from being able to, according to international law, claim largely uninhabited parts of greenland.
Not to mention a ton of their children come over to study in danish universtities, something which would obviously be cut off if independence was ever achieved or they'd atleast have to pay for the privelige.

Let's then also kick out and deport all the greenlandic students in Denmark, since they aren't a part of the country anylonger. I can think of a 100 better ways to spend that $600+ million in Denmark proper.
Let's hope Russia won't instantly sail over there and militarily occupy one of the most strategically important islands now that their only military force has left it. Surely they will treat them better than the danes ever did.

Europeans have had millennia of adaption to the poison so it creates a negative stereotype when folks who don’t have this tolerance are interacted with.
