About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
That magnet is probably activating the lid-close sensor when you put the lappy on the bassy boxy thingy :)
This is exactly what is happening. The Mac has magnets in the edges to know when the laptop is shut, and helps keep it closed.
When I was in a metal band in high-school I had a 8×10 bass cab and I put it against the wall and the TV on the other side of the wall started changing colors
@@Durkhead Haha! I remember that Tube issue 😃 Would need degaussing afterwards 🤣
Not all laptops are designed this way, FYI. Some will work fine on top of a magnet like this.
@@SinnedToy True but my old ThinkPad does the same even though it has a physical latch too so I "assumed". ;)
As a Computer Hrdwr & Elec. Design Engineer, I have had the dubious honor of being involved in the naming of a product, OMG that was the longest Engineering Meeting I have ever been in, the funny part was that we decided to go with the name for the product that I suggested! It was a Computer Tape Drive, TECMAR NS-20, the NS stood for Nightshade!
My pro tip for anything that involves presenting concepts to a board of entitled twats comes from my old boss, who was once head of product design for the UK's biggest bakery (Mr Kipling): make them feel like it was their idea all along.
When he went to present his new concept - a bakewell muffin, which is basically a classic British tart with a cherry and icing on top... but now in muffin form! - he left the iconic cherry off the top.
Eventually, after a lot of gaffaw's and "rah rah rah's" from the entitled posh boys of the board, one of them noticed that it was missing the cherry. Luckily, Steve had a tray of cherries outside the boardroom and put them on all their muffins. His pitch worked and all the board left feeling like they had made it themselves and went to pat each other on the back on the golf course.
Always present 99%, and let them feel like they were the ones to really make it work.
@@davequiquegg won't that eventually make them feel like they can do it without you?
Losing the mouse was by far my fav and most relatable part of this vid.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has days like that! By the way, bass is not omnidirectional, it's just that in an average-sized room you cannot localize deep bass because the room becomes a constant-pressure environment below a certain frequency. That's why mono subs work well in small rooms. Note that outdoors, you can hear distant thunder and know what direction it's coming from, because you're not in a constant-pressure environment. Love your videos!
Bass is Omni directional and not at the same time, the lower you go it cannot be located. The higher you go it can be localized. You can localize 80hz, not 20hz- both are theoretically bass.
Amaze ballz. Thanks for the giveaway and getting that link up. Appreciate you, Glenn!
Glen, I just watched one of your older videos and have to say, you look fantastic my friend. You’re an inspiration. Thanks for the videos, they have been helpful for me.
I have been using these for around a month and they are AMAZING. Out of the box, these speakers sound great, however the bass is definitely a little overpowering. I set mine up using a sonar works Sound ID Reference mic and it fixed ALL of my issues. Fully confident to do consistent mixes in my small New York bedroom. Would absolutely recommend.
The form factor reminds me of the speaks Apple made for the PowerMac G4s. They sounded amazing and had way more low end than you'd expect for the size. The failing was they used a proprietary cable (90s Apple...).
Glad to see the design came back. I alway liked it.
Damn those look sick! I think more companies need to make these kinds of monitors
Glenn had a bass player moment putting his laptop on that SUB. I almost woke up my girlfriend from laughing so hard LOL
Those are great sounding speakers, and your mix is top quality. Wish I had a set of those.
Love how real this video became 😅Need to see more real-world imperfection in the studio!
Hillariously accurate representation of winging it doing a video !!! Good thing you have a great sense of humor , damn funny !!!
The LP6 were amazing cant wait to try these
Thanks for the heads up on these less than £600 in the UK will have to try these out , I dont have space or position issues but you seem totally blown away with these
Thanks Glenn
Great review Glenn 👍. Kali is going to pass them all up in the near future.
I really like this setup. May even buy these at some point. When you reviewed the LP 6’s, I was researching and looking for decent, budget friendly monitors, and I have zero regrets in buying them. I am working in a small space and I could use monitor stands but I would have to set up and tear down every time I used them, as they would be in the way of doors that enter the room. So now I’m just using them on the desktop with the dip switches set correctly. I think these new monitors may better suite my setup. Thanks for making a video on these.
Tech Difficulties aside, this is a really good review. not only did i get the review but a full tech demo and i think i learned a thing or 2 about mixing
I bought Anthony Gallo Micros about 20 years ago and was blown away by the soundstage from these little monsters.
you're the only person i learn mix and mastering with reaper. Please keep uploading more content.
I think it would be cool to see a video or series of you just mixing a song. Showing us your process and what to listen for in a mix. Kinda like what you were doing between 8:00 and 9:30.
Awesome sounding mix Brother! Right before you mentioned it, I was thinking that the snare sounded a bit boxy
Ahaha- "Check this ouut." was sooo canadian lol. Btw, your mix is FANTASTIC. Shout out to you sir.
I see that Valiant guitar t shirt.I have a feeling maybe in the near future we will be seeing an awesome guitar that Glenn was sent???I Love their guitars, most beautiful tops I've seen in awhile.👍Hope you're having a great time Glenn.Later Brotha!!!
Have I lost the plot wanting to see a frequency sweep RTA response graph on this kit? Looks like a great idea, even for every day/gaming PC audio. Very interested in some measured output data.
I love great sounding audio. And I am still into the home theater systems and car audio and video. I still like the A-B amp class, but D runs a lot cooler and is supposed to be more efficient, so that's a plus. Although, some would say class D will distort at higher volumes. Looking at the specs, I'm liking what I see. The Total Harmonic Distortion could be a little lower %, but Frequency Range is not bad. The only thing that may or may not be a problem are the paper cones on the satellites. If one of those meatballs rolled onto the floor because someone sneezed. Could do some damage to the driver. One other thing to keep in mind. The low end could be giving you some enhanced low frequencies. That might be something to compare with other monitors. Maybe a comparison test in the future? Thanks Glenn. Always a pleasurer.
Grundig made sphere shaped speakers in the 70`s . They were called audiorama. I always liked the spherical design.
Nice that there is a remake with more up to date drivers. I want to listen to these live
DUDE, thanks for covering the Kali LP6. I bought a pair based on your review and they are just perfect. I can now HEAR what going on. Powerful and flat...I don't hear any hiss. @ $280 for the pair it was a defining moment in my humble rig and ears. And the company tracked with me until we ID'd a goundfault loop that suddenly started buzzing. Thanks so much for helping me learn how to get my music out there. 3 albums and 7 singles later (wink)
Glennnnn!!!
I’m listening to the latest show after just setting up the Kali IN-UNF monitors. Holy Sweet Zombie Baby Jesus these things rip!!
This title is the best thing that happened to youtube this year.
Another great video. Thanks Glen.
Side note; Does anyone else miss the intro & outro?
Damn, only 5 months late to the party, but thanks for this Glenn! I'll definitely be trying these out!
You're not getting rid of table reflections, you're just changing the frequency response of what's reflected to be 10-20 degrees more off axis from the speaker. In fact depending on your table and monitor setup you might even be introducing these reflections because these have to be setup on the table.
I use a system like that long time, i just have build it myself, with 2 broadband speakers (lately replaced them with much better ones) instead of coaxial chassis and a sub with 20 cm bass, broadband or coaxial drivers have also a very good artificial room, or stage
neat. i like you can adjust angles. im still saving up for kali lp 8's. and 4 different guitar speakers. 🍻
Lp8s are terrific.
Heh, this almost entirely cured a head-ache I've had for a few hours, that great laugh at the great mouse caper of 2023!
Love my Kali LP6-v2's, one of the best things Glenn's videos got me to try & buy. Way larger than I expected tho. Not sure this new product will save everyone space. Surface area of the satellites isn't that much larger than desk stands but you do save on vertical space, which might be just as or more important for people with multiple monitors. My setup at work would not allow me to have the amp/sub vertical and would lose a lot of under monitor space that's used for forgotten USB sticks, loose change and 3d printed lightsaber hilts ;) Pretty sure I'd find a way to use them if I win :)
Wonder if Kali will have something similar in the more budget friendly LP line eventually?
Sounds like Glenn is working on an Old School 80s Heavy Metal Mix at 2:28 🤘
Teachable moment kids! Remember Glen did go to school for this. Do not place any device (aka the laptop) on top of a large electro magnetic device. The laptop and most other electric devices ave no protection for this built into them. Great review though, thank you for taking the time to show us how great this setup is!
Damn, I wish this came out about 10 years ago, it would've been the perfect solution to allow me to have multiple monitors while keeping studio speakers on my fairly small setup!
That song you are working on rocks, kind of a Dio (as in the band, not just the singer) vibe! Maybe even Jake E Lee era Ozzy.
This is what I get for listening to Glenn and buying LP6's 2 years ago.
Yeah, I totally knew they were going to put these out!
@@SpectreSoundStudios I knew it. It was all planned. I bet a guitar with actual tonewood is coming soon. :D
@@djtripnosys never mind the LP6 V2’s too 😢
@@Steadybeheady right?
@@djtripnosys The collusion NEVER ENDS
Is Kali audio reading my mind? haha these are cool!
@SpectreSoundStudios I was working on designing something similar that was essentially intended to be a laptop pedestal. You are still going to have wavelength dependent reflection and diffraction effects, one such will be the discontinuity at the transition of the table edge. I think one issue with putting the laptop on the subwoofer, is the macbook uses a magnet to tell it that the screen is closed, so besides the mechanical vibration possibly wiggling internal components that's why it was going blank.
I'm not sure in what studio environment one would easily hear panning of 30Hz the 1/2 wavelength is like 18'.
Oh how am I doing? I managed to get obsessed with cassette tapes and now I want a Walkman! 🤩
Considering these now for starting a small studio. Was looking at the Kali’s in the $400 range these look sweet though. What software do you record with? Need to figure out a good starting software.
Getting these Glenn!!
This is such a cool idea
I've been looking at these since they came out.
I have about a 14x14 space and I’m wondering how these would compare to either the kali in8s or the Yamaha hs8s. I like the idea of a bass unit, and have read that kali audio products don’t have a harsh top end like the yahamas. Any input would?
That was AWESOME!! How did you make a collapsing table appear out of nowhere!?!? :D
great review Glenn, i don't think you made anyone cry either..
Does the sub have time alignment adjustments? If not that might be why they don’t recommend putting it under the desk
Are these speakers aimed at pc use only??? Or can they be used on a tascam dp32sd portastudio?
Man, I am so buying this. I have some big KRK 6 inch monitors and damn, they are just to big and no subwoofer. I am moving to a smaller home and mi hobby studio is way smaller. so This is perfect. Now I just need a really good desk and all done. THANKS.
Lol they must talk to Ibanez a ton to come up with the names for gear. Hell i think most do now days. Would love to see you give a gear review of the new Sterling Majesty. I know you did not like the older JP model but his Majesty line with Sterling is quite nice, Good neck joint locking tuners a more stable floating bridge. and The one i got fit and finish is much better than his older model. Really like the volume boost built in to hit from a rythem to lead tone. Great video as always Glenn, and Glad you do your reviews the way you do, you have saved me a ton of money. No more tube head for most things since Orange super crush 100, no pickup changes. And that Northern Mauler sounds so good on the clean Channel of the Orange. Thank you for your service to real players who have to be mindful of budget and also trying to have a family.
I want a pair that's only the balls. The big sub that has to be on the desk lost me
Fully agreed. Cut out the fancy electronics and offer them individually so I can drop one in my desk attached to a receiver as a center channel for movies.
Nice balls! Smoother than I expected.
Thanks. I just had them waxed.
THE TABLE!!!!! Thank you, lmao you made my morning! Fuck you glen
My desk is pretty small, could I put the sub on a shelf or something like a couple feet above my desk?
Glenn - Getting frustrated at the flat frequency Bayerdynamic DT 770 headphones not translating well across different systems/listening environments. I've been doing research on monitors and came across this. These would be ideal assuming they translate well across different environments. Do you still stand by your review on these ? Thanks
That table slap made me actually lol😆
Because the mid woofer in the ball is sealed (closed back) the mid range response will be faster and tighter... ie auratones or ns-10m...
I got a cheap version of those off of amazon years ago!!! They work great!!!!!
Whats the name?
I really like these, but how does it compare (flatness, bass extension, clarity, imaging, overall sound quality) to other well reviewed monitors i.e. Yamaha HS8 or Adam Audio T8V?
1 thing thats always confused me about recording drums. In particular the signal chain.
1st time I tried it, I plugged straight into my interface and sounded terrible. When plugging drum mics into a mixer going straight into the interface, how do you get each mic onto its own separate channel on your DAW ??
HAVE I MISSED SOMETHING HERE, OR AM I JUST BEING A BASS PLAYER ??
The magnets in the bass module are likely triggering the lid-close reed switch causing the display to turn off. lol
even with having an ssd in laptop. the magnets in bass box do mess up hd and alot of other things in it due to being metal. just dont leave it on there of a prolong time and your good. i also did same mistake. but its ok if its just that few moments being on there.
Youre looking good man!
uuuhm the aiming at your head thing does not remove reflections since lows are omnidirectional and highs have more directivity. but since the membrane is so close to the desk you place the sounde source at the pressure zone and this reduces the influence of the desk reflection other than that it seems to bee a a cool option for a second set of speakers
The mouse when looking for some cheese after getting second hand stoned from that Canadian dope. 😜
🤯 So THAT's why subwoofers are just a single unit and can be put anywhere. Always learnin' from Glenn. Now I have to find out if it's because the frequency wavelengths are too long for humans to detect in one ear before the other.
the Macbook has some HALL sensors inside the bottom part and some magnets in the screen assembly. it detects if the Mac is open or closed. The magnets in the Bass module can trigger the HALL sensor. and the Mac will go to sleep then.
I've been looking to set up and audio interface and monitor speaker. I'd love a set of these. I'm in australia send them my way man..ill make it my personal task to get every metal head I know from all the gigs to get u to ur sub goal.... glen ur content is awesome as always man can't wait for the next video
love a pair!!! i keep getting moved due to Grandchildren....needing rooms!! i do'n't mind they Rock!!!
I was just talking to a friend regarding a circle being the best shape for a speaker cab and poof, here it is lol.
Wonder if you could use in small venues as a PA system and plug your guitar into it
Or vocals or both might work 😊
The transients from live music would kill them.
Very Nice. 🤘
The latency of the hit at 0:27 is on point.
What is that expansion hub you have on the side of the Air?
Could you place the bass unit on a shelf under the table? Like the shelf would be bolted to the table, but its just under it.
Does it needed acoustically treated room for just mixing ?
4:52 - there are magnets apple uses to detect when lid closes and forces laptop to go into stand by. you can potentially get rid of this issue by switchin "stand by when closing lid" feature off.
Thanks for this review, i'd be very curious on how these would stack up against iLouds
I would have protected the speakers with speaker fabric or plastic covers that of course would not impede the sound. Awesome speakers !
SURPRISE. We had this round speaker style back in the good old G.D.R. too. Nothing new to me.
Interesting, I'd like to see measured frequency response versus a more traditional monitor that uses a tweeter, like the LP6. In the Hi-Fi world there are definite compromises when going with a single driver speaker like something from Markaudio. At the upper end of the market segment you find things with nested drivers like the significantly more expensive Genelec 8341a.
On a completely separate note, spherical speaker enclosures have long been a thing in the DIY speaker world. Shapes like that and go a long way towards dealing with front baffle reflections and accounting for baffle step compensation.
Man how about that guitar tone !!! Pretty friggin awesome. Kali audio never fails with their products. Also Glenn have you seen the Harley Benton cabs?? They are making them in New flavors. They're doing GreenBacks, Creambacks ,V30s and V30/Greenbacks loaded cabs.. I just ordered a 212 V30/Greenback load cab. Hope your trip was awesome looking forward to hearing about it !! CHEERS AND F#CK YOU my dude !!!
yep. Review HOPEFULLY coming
@SpectreSoundStudios I ordered my last night just can't beat the price for what it is
Hi Glenn, greetings from Singapore! On the topic of room acoustics and reflections, I was wondering if you could review the Waves Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin. I’ve been referencing my mixes with headphones running through this plugin and I’ve been quite impressed with the results. Cheers and fuck you!
I’ll try to add it to the list
Does the sub sound different on another surface?
Just picked up a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-R70x open back headphones for mastering practice- these things are great! I wonder, have you ever done a deep dive on open back headphones for mixing/mastering?
For MOST studio environment Open back can be a pain as you've got musicians and machines around you - sound spill both ways
But if youre just shut in to mix by yourself, good open backs DO sound real clean (PS gee whiz I miss my electrostatics -- Mega-eviction, long story)
Whats the bass like on these? I figure headpones are great to zoom in on the details, but Glenn'll no doubt yell you gotta have speakers for the big picture ;)
@@petegaslondon the clarity is a revelation to be sure. The bass is actually more detailed than my Adam audios right now, because of my current treatment situation. I’m finding mastering going much faster and I’m able to Eq and hear the things I’m doing.
How come when use reaper I can only detect sounds thru my headphones. I m not that bad at guitar. Ok.. well I'm not launching my own record company on it, but nonetheless. Please help
the mouse hunt is me everytime i use my computer lol
The magnet is affecting the magnet on the mac that causes the mac to sleep when you close the lid.
Story of my life! I've lost tools while using them... Sometimes not finding them for days lol
Are the Kali LP 6s better than the JBL 305s?
'I was gonna give 'em away, but fuck you, I love 'em' says all I need to know :) Looks like I'm going shopping.
Give that shit away!!! You hit 500k subs!
How large is that bass unit? Seems to be significantly bigger than the laptop.
Very kool!!
Wow hit 500k plus a extra 3k in 4 days. Im after a set of monitors ps i don't want the ones that have been durability tested haha love ya stuff mate. Especially the crazy screaming intros!
