Watch my full detailed review of the new 2024 GR Yaris after 1000 miles of ownership this new Gen2 model is literally better in every way but most notable is the steering feel and just how planted and confident inspiring it feels. Suspect the Gen2 will also be quick on a track too. Manual all the way !
Reviews are saying it isn’t as playful as the old one, was wondering how much that could be due to the new geometry and suspension. I’ve got a mk2 myself and kinda want a back to back between them other than carwow’s
At 4:14 you say we’re gonna get straight into it…… I applaud your obvious enthusiasm, perhaps this would be complemented with the use of some notes or a script?
Nice review. Re steering: Toyota used additional bolts to fasten the front shock absorbers. In their press release, they say this enables "sharper and more direct steering response...even when making only small steering angle adjustments". It could also be a contributing factor to the better quality damping you mention? (just a guess)
Sold my BMW135ix swapped for the gen 2. Different animal altogether, the Toyota is such a driver focussed tool, feels motorsport, solid, amazing feel and turn in. The BMW was quicker i a straight line and a more comfortable interior. All forgotten as soon as you drive the GR, I think its great value as what else drives this well for the money? Fun, missing in most modern cars.
Still waiting on an arrival date for ours here in Australia. Loving the liquid mercury colour. Going to be the wife's daily driver, not sure I'm ok with that.
My method was, first 100 miles very gentle and keep rpm under 3500rpm. 100-200 miles 4000rpm and medium throttle inputs, 200-300 miles 4500rpm with some full throttle stints. 300-400 miles 5000rpm max with more full throttle. 400-500 miles 6000rpm max with a lot more full throttle and 500-600 miles 6500rpm max and once at 630 miles go full send. Most important is to keep varying revs and gears, worse thing you can do is sit on a motorway so go drive it in the hills using the gears and rev range.
Do you still experience back end vibration when under load and acceleration? Always put this down to number plate vibration. I don't mind the dash layout but couldn't take to the newly designed front bumper, although definitely growing on me. I had a Gen 1 for 3 years from new but sold it over selling my Golf R. Don't regret it one bit but could be tempted back into the lastest version.
Personally think it has no place in this car as it’s a traditional torque converter auto so it’s not the fastest and most responsive of gearboxes. They have improved the manual and for me the manual is the one to have a lot more fun and engaging.
I have the Mk2 with 8 speed auto and an older lexus with 6speed auto, both torque converters but the transmission in GRY is lightyears away. It's really fast and responsive. I'm not a transmission expert and I don't know what they did, but it really feels direct as soon as you start moving, it binds somehow and there is no sluggishness like in my older lexus when you press the throttle and nothing happens for a second. The auto box is really really good. You also get more features with the auto like remote start and remote climate control. It's a must-have in the north during winter months when I need to defrost the windows.
i'll chip in as have the auto - which I really wrestled with the decision between that and the manual. In the end decided on the auto, as supposed to be a little quicker and not such a bad idea to have your hands on the wheel more of the time. I can also compare it to the ZF autos in the BMW's M140i and the other Getrag auto in some newer BMW eg M135ix - driven both. The GR box is different - Its quick, really quick - faster than the BMW's and the paddles are spot on position wise, blips on downshift and fast upshift. Easy to drive with the paddles. Also been playing with the up/down shift. method, rally style on the gear lever itself. - which you could argue is nearer the interaction of the manual. I quite like that if sitting in traffic, stick in auto, then when want to drive - you have the two other options - so 3 ways of using the gearbox. Is it better? I'd say just different, both have pro's and cons - at the end of it, i'm all about what does it best/fastest - so thought i'd try that given the fuss they'd made over it, i'd give it a go. It is not like a standard torque converter, its quicker.
No I won the ballot so paid £45,170 on the road which is the correct price and I bought through Toyota directly and nominated my dealership for delivery.
I’m between this new Yaris and a second hand gr supra, which one would you take? I love the yaris, the only problem is that in my country it will arrive in April 2025
@ thanks for the answer, I owned a Supra last year and I really liked it, because I only can afford one sport car so I also consider the looking, and that’s why I have my doubts with the Yaris, I have never driven one, but I have listened so many good things about the Yaris, all the people say that if you try one you will fall in love haha, and it surprises me because the persons who said that, they also own supercars like you, so you’ll take the Yaris 100% over the Supra right? New subscriber btw
I had a 2017 Leon Cupra before my GRY (Mk1). There is little similar between the two apart form straight line pace. The Cupra is a really rounded, practical car which does normal "hatch" really well and can be reasonable fun when pressing on. The GRY is completely impracticable in comparison (but OK as a 2 dr coupe) but the level of engagement is massively higher and it's ability to find grip in challenging situations (cold, wet, greasy, bumpy B road...) is almost mind-boggling and it is also astonishingly capable around a track. When I sold the Cupra to get the CRY I felt a bit sad as it is such a good, competent car doing transport so well with a bit of fun on the side. I can't imagine selling the GRY except to get a Mk2 at some point in the future
I drove a Cupra Leon around the hills in the same way I drive my Yaris (Gen 1). When we got down the bottom of the range to the first set of traffic lights all the lights on the dash came up and there was smoke coming from the wheels. The brakes were on fire. Never had an issue like that with the Yaris no matter how hard I drove it.
Hi, I think you missed the point with your assessment, the Gen 1 is more of a Rally car hence this high seating position where the Rally driver must see all the surroundings, whereas the Gen 2 mutated more to be being a sports car, where the driver can focus more on the track or things right in front of him. The biggest change is namely in the 4X4 system, which the pilot can not set himself at fixed 70/30 drie modus like in the Gen 1, the Gen 2 system works à la GTR where the car decides which route you go through a corner. Effective but boring like in a GTR, where in a reality the car is in command and not the driver. On a dry road you will see no difference, but once the surface gets slippery you will the tell the men from the boys. The thing where I felt offendend is that in the two special series OGIER and ROVENPARA they put in the drive mode MORIZO which is essentially a GEN 1 set up. So my Gen 1 stays.
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that. It throws the proportions off gives an ugly “facial expression” to the rear, and looks like it’s trying too hard to be modern and trendy. Which I think is saying a lot coming from a 25 year old.
Two points I call BS on: 1) that you’ve driven hundreds of cars. There aren’t enough models out there to drive 200+ different models. 2) that the Alpine A110 is faster on track (and your words were “any” track). There are so many Alpines and GR Yaris where I am and there is absolutely no way an Alpine is faster ANYWHERE. Not touge, not b roads, not any track.

Mate! Your an lovely person! Keep it goin

Really good review! Very informative
Thanks for watching!

Agreed it’s hard to find modern cars that drive so good nowadays
I wish we had this car here in Canada, because it looks like a dedicated rally machine, compared to mildly tarted-up Corolla we have here.
Yeah your definetely missing out
Still waiting on an arrival date for ours here in Australia. Loving the liquid mercury colour. Going to be the wife's daily driver, not sure I'm ok with that.
My husband ordered his Gen 2 here in australia in may and still no idea of delivery date either
Hi, awesome job with the video. Do you have any info how to drive the car the first km/miles? ex: rpm range.

Noticed it in our gen1 but no in gen2 so far
a little bit of foam under each end of the number plate sorts it out
Is that till called current there
Thoughts about 8at?

@@StuffFromMyLife I have gr supra with zf atm, just like auto more on daily driver these days. Will test drive this when possible!

Did you pay extra money to your dealership for getting the first batch GR YARIS Gen2 in the UK ?
No I won the ballot so paid £45,170 on the road which is the correct price and I bought through Toyota directly and nominated my dealership for delivery.
Any difference in the clutch? Great review
Feels similar but it does pull of easier and happier to pull from a roll in 2nd gear
I’m between this new Yaris and a second hand gr supra, which one would you take? I love the yaris, the only problem is that in my country it will arrive in April 2025
Good things come to those who wait, I dislike the Supra, just not for me, as such GR Yaris would be an easy decision.

I wonder how the CUPRA LEON with the 2.0 Turbo engine with 300PS compares to this.
GR is all about drive train and handling, I had a Golf R before which was fast but boring to drive by comparison
I had a 2017 Leon Cupra before my GRY (Mk1). There is little similar between the two apart form straight line pace. If its not the sports tourer (4wd) the Cupra hatch is 2wd, will battle with traction at times.

Incrementally improved, not Incrementally increased in price.
true but inflation will be having an impact also.
Is torsen lsd are standard in front and back? In previous models base trims doesn’t have lsd’s
Yes all gen2 UK cars are circuit pack as default so front and rear torsen diffs and BBS wheels
I think in terms of ceramic coating you cannot go wrong with Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating.
Big fan of Gtechniq of CSL
@Gibbo205 love a bit of detailing chat. Do you use a foam?

This, or the Alpine?
Very tough question that I do have a review in the works comparing the two
Thanks mate, I'm not in position yet to get both so thanks @@Gibbo205
Repeated every thing 4 or 5 times ? Video to long.
Thanks for the feedback, I am using notes for future videos to try and stop repeating stuff, just a bit too much enthusiam.
A rear only a mother could love. As an avid lover of hot hatches for over 35 years, this is one car which I cannot abide to look at. Bloody awful.
I must be a mother then
Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that. It throws the proportions off gives an ugly “facial expression” to the rear, and looks like it’s trying too hard to be modern and trendy. Which I think is saying a lot coming from a 25 year old.
Each to their own. I think it looks purposeful and handsome.
I do own a 2022 model though...

Alpine is quicker and considerably so fastest laps confirms as much and having owned both I know so
