And you can hear Carson absolutely lose it right when he drops back into the Foreign Man voice and says, "Thank you veddy much." Johnny was in on the joke and GOT it, man.
Andy was brilliant. He could make you feel uncomfortable one second, laugh uproaressly the next, and overall be in awe of his incredible talents. I loved him!
The “thank you very much” at the very end was priceless. You can hear Carson explode in laughter when he says it. That has to be one of the best acts on Carson ever.
It's a brilliant piece of book-ending, because it makes the Elvis part only a part of the Foreign Man act. Such a long-con, and the perfect killer ending to that act.

You guys have to understand this was Andy's act for the early part of his career. He spent hours and hours getting the Elvis down to that-- which your grandparents would say was spot on. When he did this in most venues as foreign man doing "poor impressions" it would completely bomb. In the act, he would do more than two bad ones to the point where people just thought he sucked and they paid to get in. And then he did this spot-on Elvis and blew people's minds, which is what Kaufman was all about.
It's an absolutely brilliant premise for a joke, and incredibly ballsy because it requires A) making the audience incredibly uncomfortable while intentionally bombing as "Foreign Man," but not losing them too much, and B) following up those intentionally horrible impressions with an absolutely showstopping impression. In fact, an impression wouldn't have cut it--it had to be a full-on song and dance number from an icon like Elvis, and it had to be played straight and damn near perfectly to work. Look at some of the Elvis impersonators of today--they still don't have it down quite as well as Andy did, and Elvis was still alive at this point!
He does look like him but the Elvis voice is one of those thing nearly everyone can do and people will know who you are imitating and Elvis suit is so iconic you could wear it with a beard and a blond wig and people would still think Elvis
Really wish I had seen more of him over the years. His second personality appearance on Taxi was great. That sauve man coming out from the taxi was great
+badcoach2000 I saw him from the very beginning and just loved his totally unique and off the wall comedy, and then he did Elvis, and that just totally blew me away!!!!!
He was born in 1949, so he was a kid when Elvis was at his height. Back in those days all the little boys wanted to be like Elvis. Many wore their hair like his and learned to play the guitar and sing. It wouldn't be surprising to learn that Andy was one of those little Elvis fans.
I love how much Johnny loves this. You can hear him cracking up in the background, and then of course Andy turns around and asks if he’s doing a good job. Perfect.
Glad you liked it. Unfortunately, this classic clip of Andy doing Elvis is woefully diminished by those who post this clip with Andy ONLY doing Elvis and not the entire clip of which precedes the Elvis act that is key to the entire genius of this clip. *Most clips on You Tube of Andy Kaufman doing Elvis Presley to near perfect impersonation, just don't get it.* _They'll only show him doing Elvis._ But in reality, you must watch the entire clip, the full act to really appreciate the genius of his Elvis act. The full act includes two purposefully terrible impersonations that precede the Elvis act. First of which is of Carol O'Connor of "All in the Family" getting into his 'Meathead diatribe' against his son-in-law, Michael, and doing an embarrassingly terrible job of it in his high-pitched accented voice. He then tells the audience his next impersonation would be of Ed McMahon, which he again does in his high-pitched accented embarrassingly terrible approach. So, now Andy has the audience all primed up, expectation nil, not to at all expect anything worth seeing upon announcing his next act to be an impersonation of Elvis. The audience, after watching two wilted impersonations is by now inured to any claim of a genuine, right-on impersonation. He then continues to play with he audience by turning around and donning his Elvis costume. By then he turns around and does a tour-de-force, knocked out of the ballpark of Elvis like no one has ever seen before. The first two impersonations are necessary to see in order to lower any expectations by the audience and thus raise the audience's shock and delight when he does do his Elvis so right-on perfectly. But most clips won't show the drama of the entire clip that makes this the classic it is.
Everyone laughing at the beginning because they know the spiel by now. He’s already famous from taxi. But imagine seeing him for the first time in the comedy club … not knowing the foreign man is a character and not his actual voice. And seeing him basically bomb up there … Then magically transform into Elvis. 🤩 I wish I could time travel and go into the improv his first night doing this

You know why Andy Kaufman is the best Elvis impersonator of all time it's because he wasn't trying to be funny. This is what he'd done alone in his room all his life just wanting to be like his idol Elvis Presley. He'd say so often he didn't even know what was funny or wasn't funny to people. He'd describe himself as not a comedian but rather a song-and-dance man. But he could kind of walk the line between the tasteful genuineness and funniness with the Elvis impression because... well it was actually Norm MacDonald that gave a really good quote that the best impersonations are done by people who like the people they're impersonating. Other impersonators would maybe go the degradation path to be funny but that's never what Andy did and he could still extract the good-natured humor of Elvis and his performance and it was just wholeheartedly feel-good comedy for everybody who got to watch it.
as under appreciated in his own time as Norm Macdonald,.. Andy was the first Troll, his comedy was for him, it didn't matter if you didn't get it, he did, and that was god enough,.. lol. watch his audition for Saturday Night Live if you don't think so :P...
Seeing andy Kaufman doing Elvis was wonderful .I loved how he sung, danced . He has a great singing voice ,great moves . Rest in peace andy . I loved Andy Kaufman. He was unique and extremely talented. I laughed at every episode of Taxi he was in and will always appreciate his gift he shared with all of us. May you be hanging out with Elvis and having a blast, Andy!
Daniel Appleton are u dumb? It's all apart of the act. The first two he made it seem like his impressions were litterally the same voice as his characters voice and than Elvis came to actually do a real impression when they figured it was gonna be the same voice. And than he finishes it with that voice
Gods Child I think Daniel got it. That's why he said it was his way of setting up the audience. I'd let Daniel answer for himself but he died three months ago.
His attention to detail that literally nobody else would think of, in an era before Elvis impersonation was a thing, is just mind-blowing. Down to the nose twitch lmao. And it was so loveable because, sure it had a few jabs, but, it wasn't a making-fun-of impression - it was a genuine homage.

WOW!!!!! - Spot On !
I always laugh when Andy sings Elvis so well, because I'm waiting for the "tank you very much" at the end.
Andy is a truly talented and comedic genius.
I was listening to this on headphones and wow that Elvis impersonation was the best I've ever heard...
I love Andy's Elvis. There are others, especially today, that have the voice down better, but Andy is a joy to watch.
Fantastic performance!
Simply brilliant!
His Elvis impersonation is stupendous! He was a genius.
as under appreciated in his own time as Norm Macdonald,.. Andy was the first Troll, his comedy was for him, it didn't matter if you didn't get it, he did, and that was god enough,.. lol. watch his audition for Saturday Night Live if you don't think so :P...
You can really see that this guy was at another level and WAY ahead of his time...
Joe Cap in
Yup. Genius.
He was right on time
He was too smart for his audience many times..
Joe Cap
Ahead of his time?
He was a moron
Seeing andy Kaufman doing Elvis was wonderful .I loved how he sung, danced . He has a great singing voice ,great moves . Rest in peace andy . It's been nearly 42yrs in August of 2019 that the real Elvis Presley died . Back then I felt lost without him making music ,movies . I still miss him to this day for he was my idol .
His elvis was 100 percent!. He joked about so mouch, but the elvis impersonating was perfect.
Wow, that was awesome! I almost forgot about how good he was.
Brilliant. His Elvis is fantastic.
I loved Andy Kaufman. He was unique and extremely talented. I laughed at every episode of Taxi he was in and will always appreciate his gift he shared with all of us. May you be hanging out with Elvis and having a blast, Andy!
Monic Hernandez omg, i just hear his voice and im smiling. crazy, crazy guy.
It's sad that he hated working on Taxi so much
Geordie McGrath I can understand, especially considering the fact that they only wanted him to do his foreign man schtick.
Not according to Henner.
"After the show, baby" 😂😂😂😂
Carson's laugh at the end...
Johnny was the best at finding up and coming young comedians.
The best 8 minutes in modern entertainment history. There shouldn’t be a single dislike on this video.
Am I the only one amazed by this! I thought he was just a jokester all the time. Makes me want Elvis now!
+Nicole Right on!!!!!
I did this bit for a talent show when I was in the sixth grade. Nobody understood that I wasn't imitating Elvis, I was imitating Andy Kaufman. I did the same patter, including the part about a song he did in 1927. Kaufman was the most original comedic talent ever, I think. His whole life was like a stage performance.
I remember watching this when it first aired, classic!
Best impersonator of Elvis, even the voice! Wish Andy was here!
His Elvis voice is so fucking spot on. God damn.
Goctagon Andy was good but a true Elvis fan would never saw spot on. We have listened to Elvis all our lives and can hear the difference. Andy did a great job though
Both still here and a good thing too👍
