Thanks Anastasia for making this video. I've used it several times now to reline two coats!! Relining isn't easy especially because each coat is so different. Your video had a lot of great pointers. THANK YOU !
great tutorial, i'm gonna try it out with the teddy jacket i'm making for myself. I usually make kimonos so i relly need to improve my product by making some with a lining. Thank you!
This is one of the first videos of yours that i watched. Now i am back to actually do this project. I have a wonderful coat but the lining is so tight that its uncomfortable to wear. I just snatched some red stretch satin from the joann remnants section for a steal so now i have a reason to get started
@@SewAnastasia it was an utter failure and mishap lol. But i am going to try again someday with another coat because i really want to put a lining in that is like a wild contrast or unexpected. But i suffered some mishaps here and i had to scrap it. It happens.
Great video- I'm really confused about the sleeves though, is there any chance you can elaborate on that please? How do you go from sewing the cuffs and creating the 'circle' to having the sleeves lined?
Yes please elaborate on this! I'm so perplexed at how sewing the sleeve lining and coat right sides together and how it turns around and it works? I just can't wrap my head around it 😟
Charlotte Young hi, so 1st you sew your sleeves on your jacket lining . 2nd sew your lining to the jacket at facing 3rd sew the openings of the sleeves together .... maybe watch it a few more times.
@@rmiller2179 haha like... maybe you just kind of pull it through to flip it inside out?? I feel like it might be easier to understand to just put it through first then top stitch it, I'm confused too, and not willing to try it on my actual coat!
So much is missing. It's a fair basics video but more is needed to fully understand the sleeves and cuff and flip . Seems like this would be the last step . Something is missing and that is confusing to beginners. I know what's being done and you know what's being done but more information is needed for those who aren't full time or experienced seamstresses.id definitely pull it through and hand stitch. It's the proper way to do it . Personally I dont care for short cuts but I guess if your working with time limitations it would definitely make it all faster . It looks passable now that it's done but to me it wouldnt be as personally satisfying as doing it correctly and taking the time to stitch by hand around cuffs and body bottom.
Super helpful. Any ideas on what I should do if I'm replacing a lining that has already been removed? I don't have the old lining to use as a pattern ☹️
You first need to know how wide the fabric is and then you can measure the width and length of the pieces. It's like putting together a puzzle on a rectangle.
Thank you, Anastasia, for such a marvelous tutorial! Clearly, due to time constraints, it's not possible for you to cover absolutely every issue which might arise, such as showing different approaches to connecting the sleeve lining. I'm going to be trying to replace the lining on a vintage Harris Tweed blazer, and I think I'm inclined to turn the sleeve completely inside-out, with the lining wrong-side to the sleeve wrong-side, and then sew the lining to the sleeve at that point. But you are empowering us to believe we can accomplish this, which is sometimes more than half of the battle. And thanks for mentioning that you offer sewing lessons. Best wishes!
I had a 100% vicuña wool jacket relined in 100% silk last year. The original lining was polyester. I paid a seamstress $80 to do the job. The links contain pictures of the finished jacket. ibb.co/0tdQ0TG ibb.co/fNv3xTr ibb.co/NZw2fJS ibb.co/6WVfDz1 ibb.co/7CD5xPv
Can I do the same thing but with the outside of the jacket ,mine is a very nice cozy jacket. Although, the outside is a print of horses. I was hoping I could cover it with a plain fabric.
Can this be applied to pants? I'm trying to make the inside on the pant legs a different color so when I cuff the pants there are two colors. Is this possible?
Take your seam ripping hand and place it firmly against the fabric holding hand, palms together. And then PRAY you have enough chocolate and coffee to keep from putting the new lining in backwards, upside down, or throwing it across the room... speaking from personal experience! 😂
I finished my pants and I'm making a jacket now. There are pleats in the center back seam of the lining but I don't quite know how to interpret the pattern. I was hoping you would show that. Is it complicated? It just shows a little box with angled sides on the seam. I love the colors you used.
Great tutorial... What size sewing machine needle do you use for this type of fabric.. Also do you recommend cleaning coat before removing lining or after or even at all ...
Hi, I would reccomend cleaning the coat before changing the lining. When I took the lining out it was full of dirt. I used a 80 needle I believe when I was sewing this.
Hi, I am looking up another way to attach a coat lining because the sewing pattern I'm using recommends attaching it with a catch stitch. I don't like the way it looks because it's drooping a bit at the neck facing. The reason this is happening is because I lined my coat in wool tartan fabric and added interlining to the back lining piece for extra warmth. The back piece is a bit heavier than regular lining. Do you have any suggestions? I thought about using a pick stitch or a running stitch or maybe machine stitching but, I'm not sure. I pick stitched the collar, patch pockets and the inside edge of the front facing. This is a vintage sewing pattern with lots of hand sewing involved, so far. I don't mind hand sewing though.
I don't have lining . That's why I want to add lining . I can't find any information anywhere about what to do in this case. Is that because it's too hard or crazy? What a great idea to use weights when cutting pattern pieces! Why didn't anyone tell me this valuable little hint? And the info about what gathering in sleaves are for is so great!
I would like to add a removable lining to a cape that doesn't have one. Could I use the cape for the lining pattern? I am still giving some thought to how to attach it to make is removable.
It’d be tough getting in and out of a coat with all that nap. You can buy lining with a flannel back. At least that’s what I’m doing. www.voguefabricsstore.com/kasha-satin-winter-coat-lining-taupe.html
J Stevenson love ok for something that is durable. You also want something that is smooth like a satin and not like a flannel. This way your arm slides nicely into the sleeves or at least put a smooth fabric in the arms. Depending on the luxury of your jacket silk charmuse would be to die for.
Hi Anastasia, your videos are very informative and helpful. I have a satin jacket which is too tight at the sides and i would like you to help me alter it by adding an extra piece of fabric at the sides to loosen it.plz can you help me by demonstrating the method through a video? Thanks
It’s so much faster to use the rotary cutter to rip out stitches after you get the first few loose. Lay the cutter, flat side, down on the fashion fabric. Draw the lining up over the cutter blade to expose the lining to the blade. Voila. Zip zip.
I saw this done on a quilting show. It’s quite easy. Just need to be sure to position the blade so that only the stitches come in contact with the blade. You never go back to seam ripping the old way. However you need to use the seam ripper to open the seam enough to insert the cutter between the layers.
E Johnson in manufacturing we use a razor blade. It sounds like the same concept. I’m sure it’s where it’s from . A rotary blade is basically a huge razor blade. I totally agree that this is fast & easy. It’s also dangerous if your not skilled. So I tend not to show this method. Thank you for sharing though !!!

Maybe you can add a section showing your hand stitching technique on the bottom of the hem using contrasting color thread and a bit slower. Please aim your seamripper away from your hand. A little slip can cause a really nasty puncture wound between your thumb and first finger. If you are doing something because of ease in filming it, please let your viewers know the correct safe way to use a seam ripper. Always aim the point away from your hand holding the fabric.
when i relined a jacket i had to aim the seamripper the way she did because the lining was so delicate, so seamripping correctly would have ripped the fabric
