Hey Lex, very interesting guest. But I was wondering if you'd ever do something similar like Todd Howard or John Carmack again? John Romero, Sandy Petersen and American McGee would all make great guests.
As an IT guy and (old school) gamer, I'd be very interested in hearing from guys like that.
Or Richard Garriott, Ed Boon, Chris Avellone, Ken Levine, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, Warren Spector, Sid Meier, ...
Or some of the Japanese guys if language makes it possible like Shinji Mikami, Suda51, Hideo Kojima, Yu Suzuki, Toshihiro Nagoshi, ...
      And of course Miyamoto-san himself.

People get pushed out of the media for having these thoughts, Norman Finkelstein was pushed out of his University, and now congresswoman Rashida Talib was censured. There really is no free exchange of ideas in the US. Look what happened to James Traficant and Cynthia McKinney. Everytime I see Netanyahu on TV I can't stop thinking of A Clean Break and all the US soldiers that were physically and psychologically harmed by the Iraq war. I have to keep telling myself there are plenty of people who oppose him.

Rational, there isn't much rationale about John's reasoning except his realy weak understanding of the Russian Imperial project. He doesn't speak languages, his understanding of the second world war is poor. He doesn't understand that it was stated by an alliance of Russia and Germany is poor. He always omits to mention that Russia tried to invade France around 1800 before Napoleon invaded Russia, that Rusdia attacked Sweden before Sweden, he forgets that Russia wanted free hands to attack the Nordic countries before Russias ally Germany, turned on Russia. One thing is super clear, Russia is constantly aggressive and a threat to Europe. We need to defend ourselves from. We should let Russia, Iran and North Korea for their own way of living, but we should always know that we need to prepar to defend against their dreams of colonial expansion into our land and culture. John, your understanding of this process is so poor that I feel ashamed on your behalf.😢

Geopolitics isn’t rational… it’s in American interest to stop Russia and other expansionist countries… that’s rational for an American. For Russia, they may think it’s rational to invade there neighbors for there specific goals… “rational” is just a word thrown around when geopolitics is almost all grey with very little black and white.

Although I'd agree that the meaning of antisemitism has been stretched, nonetheless unqualified support for the Palestinian cause including groups like Hamas that requires the extermination of Jews is indeed anti-Semetic, advocates genocide and reprehensible. I'd recommend that people be careful who they support... It's possible to believe you're supporting a just cause but carelessly ally with someone who advocates or purposely does barbaric and inhumane acts. Do you or others really believe in inhumane acts on others and justify it in any way?

    • @johntowers1213
      @johntowers1213 5 месяцев назад

Lets not get the facts too twisted here for the longest time right up until this latest attack the Israeli State apparatus saw Hamas as an effective tool in the prevention of a Two state solution something they themselves were also utterly opposed to behind closed doors
Most of the time, Israeli policy was to treat the Palestinian Authority as a burden and Hamas as an asset. Far-right MK Bezalel Smotrich, now the finance minister in the hardline government and leader of the Religious Zionism party, said so himself in 2015.
According to various reports, Netanyahu made a similar point at a Likud faction meeting in early 2019, when he was quoted as saying that those who oppose a Palestinian state should support the transfer of funds to Gaza, because maintaining the separation between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza would prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state.
to follow your own logic this tacit support by the Israeli government of Hamas makes them inherently antisemitic.....

Westetn liberal demicracies were the drivers of all conflict post-cold war. African countries are still trying to extracate themselves. Institutions of state in the West are all money controlled. Power pyramid is ultimate goal, as financial net can spread endesly. Once the expansion slows down, or countries become imune to penetration, the pyramid implodes. It is kept inflated by generating a trillion every hundred days. The theory of democracy in the conditions of hyper-financialization, does not hold water. At present, testing Russia and China, as small pray is no longer sufficient. The hope lies in internal reforms that eliminates or balances the relations between financial and real economy. Nothing is hopeless. But itvwill take knowledge and determination.

@@opinion4755his ideas only seem contrarian because people take his ideas and snip them to fit into their political/cultural discussions and debates.

But his actual idea has nothing to do with these discussions, he’s a realist, and he believes America should pivot to Southeast Asia to confront China, as he sees China as the main rival to the US, and in the process America should neutralize Russia from joining China, but the US did the opposite, it antagonized Russia and this made Russia fall into Chinese arms, which strengthened China, while distracting the west from fighting China

      2) Putin is the man who saved Russia from destruction by the West. It is not his job to save the world. I have read two biographies, both written by men who are opposed to him and to Russia, and I have great respect for him.
      3) I don't think that you have read much of anything relating to the things you speak so knowingly about.
      4) Do you actually expect people to give your views precedence over Mearsheimer's? If you do, you are completely delusional. How many books have you written on this topic?

00:00 🌍 John Mearsheimer emphasizes the importance of power in international relations and how states seek power for survival due to the absence of a higher authority in the global system.
02:33 📈 Power in international relations is largely determined by population size and wealth, with these factors underpinning a state's strength.
05:31 🌐 Anarchy in international politics refers to the absence of a higher authority above states, leading them to maximize relative power for survival.
09:26 🤝 Nations strive for power to ensure security, not necessarily aggression, driven by historical examples like the Century of National Humiliation in China.
12:26 🌐 Realism versus liberalism in international relations: Realists focus on power, competition, and war as instruments of statecraft, while liberals have more optimistic views, emphasizing aspects like democratic peace theory, economic interdependence, and institutions for peaceful coexistence.
16:44 🏛 Democratic peace theory suggests that democracies tend not to fight each other due to shared norms and values, while realists argue that structural dynamics, not democracy, drive state behavior.
18:45 💰 Economic interdependence theory posits that economic ties between nations deter war, yet realists assert that security concerns often override economic interests in conflicts.
19:44 📜 Liberal institutionalism proposes that rule-based institutions can promote peace, contrasting with realist notions that survival trumps prosperity in critical situations.
23:13 🤔 Realist divisions include structural realists (focus on system) vs. human nature realists (emphasis on individual psychology) and within structural realism, the distinction between offensive (seeking power) and defensive (maintaining power) realists.
25:11 🌐 Structural considerations heavily influenced Nazi Germany's aggressive behavior, highlighting the interplay between structural factors and individual leadership (e.g., Hitler's "will to power").
27:07 🇩🇪 Factors like resentment over the Versailles Treaty played a role in Hitler's rise to power, showcasing the complex interplay between historical grievances, individual psychology, and international conflicts.
28:02 🌐 Hitler's rise to power was influenced by factors such as resentment, economic depression, and his ability to pull Germany out of the Great Depression.
30:31 🌍 Structural elements drove significant historical events, like Hitler's actions in World War II, but history is multidimensional, involving various aspects beyond mere individuals.
31:56 🛠 Realism in international relations theory answers key questions about security competition and great power wars but doesn't explain every aspect, like the specifics behind events like the Holocaust.
34:24 🤔 Hitler's decisions in World War II had resistance internally within Germany, especially concerning the invasion of Poland and France, contrasting with the less oppositional decision to invade the Soviet Union.
36:29 🏹 Hitler's strategy involved various axis points in different directions during World War II, emphasizing the importance of different approaches and target regions.
39:27 🔍 Soviet Union's fierce resistance against Nazi Germany was driven by the genocidal nature of the adversary and the understanding that surrender meant death, motivating them to fight fiercely.
42:27 🕊 Putin's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 wasn't necessarily about conquering all of Ukraine, but primarily a response to NATO expansion into Ukraine, as evidenced by negotiation attempts to end the conflict soon after it began.
48:11 ⚔ NATO's expansion into Eastern Europe, particularly Ukraine, despite Russia's objections, significantly contributed to the conflict and tensions between Russia and the West.
51:31 🌍 The West's strategy aimed to make Ukraine a pro-Western democratic state within NATO and the EU, which clashed with Russia's security concerns and led to a dire situation.
52:57 🛡 Putin doesn't aspire to recreate the Soviet Union but prioritizes Russia's security, particularly regarding NATO's proximity to Russian borders. His primary concern is to prevent NATO expansion into Ukraine.
56:24 🌍 Putin faced a challenging period of national humiliation for Russia, and it took time to rebuild the country's strength.
57:51 🛡 The US held significant power from 1989 to 2017, remaining the strongest global player.
58:49 🇷🇺 Russians' historical experiences with invasions make them sensitive about Ukraine's proximity to their border.
59:18 🌐 Strategists need empathy to understand others' perspectives in international politics.
01:00:14 🤝 Putin's perception of NATO expansion differs from the US's benign view, impacting their reactions.
01:02:47 💔 Prospects for a meaningful peace agreement in Ukraine appear dim, frozen conflict likely.
01:04:55 🤔 Direct talks between Zelensky and Putin might have a sliver of a chance without US involvement.
01:08:30 💡 Potential solutions involve Ukraine's neutrality and accepting Russia's territorial gains.
01:13:02 🕊 Trust issues from failed agreements hinder the possibility of successful negotiations.
01:17:58 🔄 Removing Putin won't likely lead to a more peaceful resolution in Ukraine; a replacement might be more hardline.
01:20:36 🎙 Asking Putin direct, specific questions might reveal insights into his perspectives and intentions.
01:24:38 🚀 Deterrence Strategy: Mearsheimer argues that possessing nuclear weapons serves as a powerful deterrent, especially for weaker nations like Ukraine against potential adversaries.
01:25:36 🌍 NATO and Ukraine: Mearsheimer criticizes NATO expansion and argues against bringing Ukraine into NATO, foreseeing its destruction. He suggests that stability in Europe is better served by avoiding such actions.
01:26:35 💣 Nuclear Weapons Use: In a MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) world, Mearsheimer discusses the potential use of nuclear weapons for manipulation of risk and as a demonstration effect. He explains historical Cold War scenarios and speculates on Russia's potential use in a conflict with Ukraine.
01:32:28 🌐 Rapid Escalation: The conversation delves into the terrifying dynamics of nuclear weapon use in the modern age, considering the fast-paced nature of news, social media, and how a small demonstration of power can lead to unpredictable and catastrophic consequences.
01:38:34 🇮🇱🇵🇸 Israel-Palestine Conflict: Mearsheimer attributes the October 7th, 2023, Hamas attack to the ongoing Israeli occupation. He discusses the diminishing prospects of a two-state solution due to increased Israeli resistance and loss of interest, emphasizing the need for peace in the region.
01:46:52 🕊 Conflict and Leadership: Mearsheimer dismisses the notion that those in power benefit from conflict, asserting that Israeli leaders prefer submission over resistance. He underscores the importance of achieving a two-state solution for lasting peace.

It would be a fun debate indeed. Though, I doubt Kotkin would have much of a chance against Mearsheimer. Kotkin seems to argue that Russian politics has a long thread of autocratic rulers dominating the scene, which is true enough, but that has nothing to do whether or not NATO expansion into Ukraine presents an existential security dilemma to Russia. It does, that is undeniable. The length of the border would be cost prohibitive to defend. Furthermore, the ability of NATO to amass a first strike arsenal with sufficient capabilities to neutraliser Russia's second strike capacity, which would obviate their nuclear deterrent, would be a real possibility.
Based on that, it does not matter who was Russia's leader, anyone would respond by preventing NATO from checkmating them.

I’m just a nobody and have only a cursory understanding of Russian geopolitics, but I don’t see how NATO is a threat to Russia in terms of aggression. NATO is a defensive organization, and from what I can tell about its European members, they want no to do with a war, especially one of first strike into Russia of all places. If anyone is scared it’s Western Europe of Russia. I disagree with this guy on Putin as well…I think Putin is just a Russian Mob thug who wants more power…..I don’t think he’s dumb at all…but a mob thug nonetheless ….but what do I know….just kinda wanted to discuss and see what other people are thinking.

    • @bandolin1216
      @bandolin1216 6 месяцев назад

@@memeticist NATO is a defensive alliance. First Strike? It would never happen because ALL members must vote on it including Turkiy. NATO does not have a history of unprovokingly attacking its neighbors over the last 200 years. But there is one country in the region that does. That being said the US is a dangerous country, in fact you could argue they have been the most violent nation since WWII with military actions/presence in almost every country on the planet. However, there is an ENORMOUS difference between NATO and the US. Everyone in NATO has an equal vote.
Putin considers NATO an existential threat? Too bad; deal with it. I'm Canadian. I consider the US with their gun culture, China with their political interference in our elections, India who assassinated a Sikh activist on Canadian soil to be an existential threat. But what can we do about it? We have to live with it.

Mearsheimer is not objective in the slightest. He is a child of the Cold War. He can only think in terms of imperial interests of the USA, Russia, China. He treats all other countries, especially those in the historical sphere of Russian influence, as pawns, subjects of the game played by the big players. It's absolutely repugnant and as a Pole I find it hard to be reduced to a minion who has no say which side I want to align with. Mearsheimer grants no voice, no independence to Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic states. We are independent nations with a proud history. Mearsheimer can't tell us who we should ally. If we prefer the US over Russia (and it's obvious why we prefer the US), then Mearsheimer should f*ck off and shut up.

He made it very clear that great powers seek for every opportunity to expand and to protect their security. If you conquer Crimea, you provide the entire region of Black Sea with security, it is like immobile carrier. Plus, you need resources to develop both your military might and prosperity and the sea shelve near Crimea is exceptionally rich of minerals, gas and oil, you might want to control it as well. One thing you should probably understand is that in realism, there is no such thing as ethics or morale in common sense. There is the morality of statehood. And if you act accordingly to the interest of your state, to provide its development and security, than you are highly ethical in political sense. So, I don't think he is biased of any sort, because he clearly said that if one country can fight for its interest if any opportunity given, why others cannot? That is the point

Can I answer? I live in Russia and most of us look at this conflict as a confrontation between Russia and the collective West. Ukraine, in our opinion, plays the role of a striking fist. We in Russia (the absolute majority) consider Ukrainians to be a fraternal people, just like Belarusians. Brotherly but deceived people. Over the past 30 years, Ukrainians have changed a lot, they have become different. They betrayed us and our common ancestors. Western Ukrainians and Bandera fans are to blame for this. They managed to spread their view of history, their values and concepts throughout Ukraine. It is sad. In general, people in Russia do not hate Ukrainians, but we will fight with them. For the sake of the peaceful life of the residents of Donbass and Crimea who have not forgotten that they are Russians and have not betrayed the memory of their ancestors. This is short. Thank you.

Knowing everything about Ukraine isn't as important as understanding the big picture of what's best for the U.S. John's got a pretty sharp take on the whole Ukraine-Russia situation. Ever since the Clinton era, the U.S. has been too caught up in wars that don't really matter for our main goals, like the one in Ukraine. His view on Russia is clear, straightforward, and sadly true. In a world where power is spread out, it would make more sense for the U.S. to team up with Russia instead of China. But what's happening is we're actually pushing Russia closer to China, which is a rookie move. It's like we're following a childish wish-list of how the world should work, instead of dealing with the real deal.

@mb-bp1eb yeah I can sympathize with your position: it frusteates me how so many people talk about Israel commiting atrocities without even knowing that prior to any such event, there was just about always a revolt, terror attack, invasion by Arab states that preceded it. They're so awash in one-sided propaganda and don't even know it. I also feel for the Palestinians as people suffering the situation and huper propagandized, though they can't help it due to who's in control there. It seems that the surrounding Arab states just use the Palestinians as an festering open wound for Israel. I personally think the Israelis would have done better to have not gone for an offensive in Palestine after Oct. 7th... I think they could have had so much sympathy while there be so much disgust with Hamas, while all the Hamas apologists would have looked terrible trying to defend those actions... they could have made demands of Hamas that they would turn down, and after exhausting those other mediated options, they could then go for an invasion. I could easily be naive though.
As for Russia, my dad is Hungarian. When he was 12, him, his brother, sister and parents escaped to Austria just as the Soviets were closing the borders again after reoccupying Hungary as the 1957 uprising came to an end. I have no love for the Soviet Union nor modern Russia... they destroyed my family, who were minor land holders before the Soviet takeover. I don't think modern Russia is the same as the Soviets, and I don't like the mob influence in their state and cultural problems, but also think they're heavily propagandized against. I find this conflict with Ukraine difficult and feel the Ukrainian people have been crushed and used as pawns in Great Game conflicts. When it comes down to it, I don't blame Russia for it primarily, but the class of people who captured the US government who along with the UK, sabotaged the early 2022 peace talks. The way the US-UK axis exercises influence over Europe is disturbing to me, Germany's economic and political interests have been badly mismanaged and it was sad how they did nothing after the Nordstream 2 sabotage... the Anglo-Americans in my view do not want Germany and Russia to align as it would be a competitor to them who are evidently fixated on maintaining unipolar hegemony in my view. I think many of the things we love about the free West are being dismantled by this same class in Washington and London and the pinnacle elites.
I agree with Mersheimer about the Minsk accords being done in bad faith to buy time by NATO, that has been documented. There are some arguments that the Euromaiden Revolution wasn't necessarily a US intelligence backed operation, but I come down on the side that says it was.
It's tough because Russia just doesn't have the soft-power to asdress all these subversive, underhanded ploys run by the Anglo-Americans who do have that soft power, so they can do these power grabs and still spin it like Russia was the bad guy... I think Russia could either allow the continual erosion of their interests, and to be surrounded by the US and allies, or they could resort to the military option when other routes fail.
I could be wrong though, and have put too much weight on this perspective, so I'm interested to hear other perspectives on it

@@JohnDoe-hh7eo Exactly. This assumption should have been challenged. JM makes an assumption of "occupation" that shows where he stands. What about the Balfour Declaration, the Six days war, the Yom Kippur war, the declaration of Israel as a state with a right to exist? Palestine has never been declared as a nation with sovereign rights to this land. Using the term "occupation" shows that he thinks it is their land.

    • @mandarine1007
      @mandarine1007 6 месяцев назад

@@jsfranks840Interesting, don’t be too quick to jump to conclusions, he is who he is for various reasons including his rigorous fact checking and analysis. Also, he is only looking at this from an IR perspective. Passing judgment is not his style. If you want a deeper dive into that history you should probably read Dershowitz, Pappe, and Finkelstein. And by the way you should read them with full impartiality. Then go into the facts, which are other very prominent and influential Israeli historians. But I warn you, it is not a pretty story. Which is why, the present situation is much more complicated than the surface of emotions. The level of ramifications that this event and possible future political settlement might have is not going to look well for Israel. I think the only solution to avoiding putting up face now is to prolong this war beyond the stretch of time, which means the total destruction of the palestinian civilian population. Again, very bad for Israel and all the positive things it can represent for the community and the region. In my opinion, this is an epic failure from their side. And I understand that you can argue that this is the PA or PLO’s mistake. However, you should be reminded that they have had and have no real power to go to a negotiating table. The government of Israel is enormously more powerful and mighty. Hamas has firecrackers if compared to the military capacity of the IDF.

They are seldom benign fair objective and ALWAYS resented no matter how benign.
Thus the dictator or heiarch must in the end ALWAYS resirt to measures seen as repressive to maintain its position.

Is it really? It is SO clear that John gets his talking point straight from Norm Finkelstein and therefore there are so many blatant errors:
      1) Implying Hamas attacked because of the occupation is INSANE. They explicitly state they want an Islamic caliphate across the land - it has nothing to do with an occupation, which can only end with the agreement of the Palestinians. Moreover the PEAK of Hamas suicide bombings was DURING peace negotiations which they were desperate to derail, bringing me to the next point:
      2) He implies the problem of no peace is Israel doesn't want it. HOW DOES HE EXPLAIN THE COUNTLESS TWO STATE OFFERS MADE BY ISRAEL?? HOW DOES HE EXPLAIN HOW BILL CLINTON BLAMED THE CAMP DAVID FAILINGS ON ARAFAT, SAYING THE ISRAELIS WERE SO DETERMINED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE?? THAT THE PALESTINIANS HAVE NEVER (!!) OFFERED A COUNTER-PROPOSAL?? HOW DOES HE EXPLAIN OPINION POLLS IN ISRAEL SHOWING MOST PEOPLE ARE AGAINST THE SETTLEMENTS AND WANT A RESOLUTION?? He's acting as if Netanyahu's cabinet was Israel's MO for all these years?
      3) Saying that the protests around the indicate anything about who is morally correct is very misguided considering he completely glossed over the fact that there are almost 2 BILLION (!!!!) Muslims in the world, who as he acknowledged are extremely tribal, and only 15mil Jews. They're outnumbered more than 1,000:1.
      4) Saying the lobby is scared to open Israel's history is ridiculous - all they do is talk about how Israel was unjustly attacked since its inception. Anyone who actually deep-dives into the history knows that Israel was acting in self defense in 1948.
      5) Saying the world would have supported 'precision strikes' to get rid of Hamas and that he knows Israel wants to kill civilians is pure stupidity. The Muslims (& ultra-progressives) would have been pissed NO MATTER WHAT Israel did, he himself acknowledged there were mass amounts of pro-Palestinian protests right after the attack. More importantly, acting as though there is any sort of military solution that can eradicate Hamas without killing the number of civilians they've killed is arrogance to another degree. Every urban warfare expert I've seen has said Israel is doing the best job it possibly can in the circumstances, and if he's so sure they're not where are his astute military recommendations then?

Occupation??? You mean like every country in the world. The only difference with the Israelis is they were too kind hearted not to kick the Arabs out once after beating them in war after war. There are millions of refugees all over the world, who left this year. The Palestinians are the only ones the world cares about, because no one agrees to take them in. That includes 22 Arab and another 30 non Arab Muslim countries. Why? Because they start terror organizations and try to overthrow the local government. Israel is the only country where a large group of Palestinians live with full rights. The only reason the West Bank and Gaza were not treated like people us because the Palestinians there did and do what they tried to do in Jordan and Egypt, violently overthrow the local government. Those countries put them down with startling, immense violence. (See Black Friday.) If you want more facts, rather than fake news buzz words, see TravellingIsrael, Benny Morris, Douglas Murray.
