Korra Uzumaki didn't just steal the spotlight from us, she stole the spotlight from every character. TBH, I couldn't care less about her stealing the spotlight from us, but giving Erenville and Krile half of a level's worth of development each is a sin.
"My mother's in danger, can we go check on her" - Erenville
"No, we must learn about *farming equipment*" - Wuk Lashit

The answer is yes, and the proof is the interview where Yoshida spoke about taking the story in a new direction due to reception. However, that's not the problem Dawntrail had. The premise of the story wasn't Dawntrail's downfall. You can tell the story of Dawntrail through the medium of an MMO, and have it be good. Squenix simply chose not to. Why? I don't know. No matter where they choose to steer this ship, this won't solve the problem of Storytelling. What's worse is that at no point was this acknowledged, which leads me to have little faith for future .x patches, or even whole expansions.

Well they've always said this would be the beginning of a new arc, and it would depend on certain things about how they would craft the next couple of expansions. An outright failure? No. Far from it. This is a new start, a slow paced journey to learn things and really take a back seat for the moment.
The pacing needed help, it's on par with Stormblood in that respect, but I do think they did a great job with the overall point, and it was a great follow up to the themes of Endwalker. Going from the light of hope in the face of despair, to the idea that those that are lost are not gone as long as we remember moving forwards? It sets up a new path rather well. Not to mention the artifact we found and the implications therein.

As much as I disliked this expansion and have expressed as much in reviews and the official forums, I think it's time we start talking more about anything that caught our attention and we would be interested in learning more about. They are NOT going to do an ARR with this expansion so all we can say is what we want in the future whether it be in regards to certain story beats we want explored more. Wuk Lamat had little to no growth, she is a Mary Sue...
What did she better about herself?? Nothing xD
She got stronger without a reason and no training montages to suggest that she had.
I don't care if WoL is not in the spotlight, just make good characters that don't overstay their welcome and annoy us to bits.
Speak with Wuk Lamat occurs 139 times... There is total of 369 speak to objective and that would make it 38% of it is Wuk Lamat.

Having played since 1.0 and a fan of Stormblood due to job design, music, raids etc I can see the parallels that people made with DT. DT was a terribly written story where Meteor is stuck with Wuk Lamat and she simpyl doesn't go away at least Minfillia or Lyse had their moments and were not ever present. I feel that even our responses to calling Wuk by her familiar name was something I was forced to do and the same of other conversation matter choices and lack of snark was simply limited. I felt I lost some of the narrow autonomy of my character and I was forced to accept this goddam awful character. For the love of god she needed to simply fuck off and fuck off some more and give me some goddam space respite.
ARR build loads of narrative that would last years and DT failed to do that and here we are with the endless and some quite stupid moralism about them. The competition between Scions didnt happen it was pathetic, Krile had a short story but despite it being hailed as her story and Erenville also become secondary, just look at the word count analystics. Love ffxiv but DT is a dumpster fire and it is for me the worst it has ever been and was utter tripe. Now the dungeons and new raids are bloody fantastic, new graphics are looking good and it has energised my game but the MSQ nah it was crap for me.

  • @mismismism
    @mismismism Месяц назад +5

DT was a mess for me(although I love the gameplay content in contrast so that carries the experience for me), my issue was not with the concept of DT, the execution was bad and baffling to me because they fell into a lot of pitfalls they already ironed out after ARR and some that just confuse me.
Overall the writing felt tailored to like 5-10 year olds, it was very weird to me, all the friendship and smiles solve everything stuff was too much for me, I didn't need darkness but I expected a more mature narrative that treated things with a realistic lens but it didn't, everything felt sugarcoated like it was for kids that can't understand the harsh, unavoidable parts of life, peace, government, etc.
They put all their eggs in 1 basket with Wuk Lamat too which I will never understand. That's such a basic rule they broke, no single character will land with everyone, especially that cheery, Naruto thing, but they made her steamroll the narrative start to finish while everyone else barely got scraps. And the English voice acting was bad, they could not emote, anything that wasn't cheerful just did not land, especially in the ending and last trial, the VA took me out of the scenes entirely with the delivery.
And just many issues of how they frame scenes, that made them nonsensical. It's fiction, if a scene doesn't make sense, they had the power to change it and just don't. Characters just stand and watch things they should intervene in because they didn't create a reason why we can't help, or plot points that contradict what we know of other characters, or these sudden heel turns by characters all over the place that are so jarring and lacking nuance. It feels like subtlety is gone, they bash you over the head with these things and it just did not work for me.
I'm happy for anyone that enjoyed it but for me, it was the worst MSQ by a wide margin, even below ARR for me because that at least spread the screen time, and felt more mature overall.

    • @Nothv13
      @Nothv13 Месяц назад

Also remember they said the expansion would also focus more on Krile, and I really feel that as soon as it started to focus on her Wuk would suddenly come in and steal the spotlight. They even robbed us from seeing Krile's reaction of her being born on another another reflection by having it told to her off screen and us only learning about later, all because Wuk was leading us around like a puppy on a leash. I think someone counted up 138 quest objectives that were "Talk to Wuk Lamat" which is absolutely insane. I'm not sure we've had that many for long running returning character over the life time of the game let alone in one expansion.
The fact that she convinces the leader the lizard people, who have been extremely xenophobic and cult like for what seems to be centuries to magically trust outsiders with little to no effort and goes from not even touching vastly superior fighters to easily swatting them and their entire retinue aside in a short time is baffling as well.
Also anyone that says we are in a mentoring role, has no idea what a mentor is. We are at most a cheerleader. The rare times where we get a response that isn't just straight supportive of Wuk, another character chimes and and simply says we don't mean it or that we are delighted. It is snot simply that Wuk is forced upon us, but we are forced to like Wuk

    • @mismismism
      @mismismism Месяц назад

@@Nothv13 Exactly, Krile was wasted, she barely had anything, when really, at least the second half should have focused on her and her backstory, but no, Wuk Lamat again.
Yeah, it felt like children wrote it, the fact they had a Mamool literally stop to tell her that her promising to send seeds maybe if she wins cured their racism and generations of hatred and desperation that pushed them to literal baby murder, but Wuk was nice to us so we pinky promise not to be xenophobic anymore.
That too, we were basically a mascot. The moment a certain someone dies while we stand and watch without intervening at all only for Alisaie to hit us with "How could this have happened? We tried everything we could!", I could not face palm harder. It's like the writers didn't even try or care tbh.

biggest thing for me was our characters looks being changed. i hardly recognize myself and the changes simply arent good. we look cartoony. the msq was a letdown considering in endwalker the intro of lamaty'l was actually exiting and her look was great. but the new graphics updates are not needed and could have been changes that made better sense all while leaving who we choose to be alone while making the world look better. it seems i traded my smile for better grass physics. the dungeons were fun and the newer challenges in them were welcome, but they dont make getting to them any more interesting. after playing since 1.0 and then 2.0 to present, i went to pay my sub this month and changed my mind. and yes i did all the current content including the ex primals.

I'm a super casual player and really enjoy going through the story, but this really did not have the grab for me. I think part of it is, like you said, a new story, but they leaned too much into Wuk Lamat and not really many others. A lot of the story was really easily guessed - and minus one single thing - I figured out the entire story before getting there. It's also really "go here, go here go here go here" and not fighting which gets super boring.
I know others enjoy it and that's great for me, but for me this really is hard to get through.

My Dawntrail thoughts summarized as a meteor survivor:
Story - overall was good but honestly lacking in some places. Consider Heavensward had 8:15 hours of cutscenes to tell its story and Dawntrail had 21:07 and Heavnsward very much surpassed in storytelling.
Characters - I enjoyed all of the characters introduced but do believe Wuk Lamat could have grown a little more throughout our journey, especially from the prospective of being a ruler of people
Questing - Really streamlined which felt nice but there was a distinct lack of combat
Dungeons - The difficulty increase was great and the designs were really fun, especially the 90 dungeon. The revised mechanics were fresh
Job changes - They took leap away from my DK and I am sad but otherwise fine. I can't comment for other calsses
Graphic update - Loved it, has added a lot of life to the game
Music - Overall I think the music was great as always but I don't like the end theme, its better without the singing over the top. I think a different lead vocalist would've been better
Voice acting - The voice acting was stellar bar one particular character which overall was quite underwhelming which was Wuk Lamat. I don't see this as much as a criticism of Sena Bryer but more on Square Enix. They approved it after all and saw it fit for purpose. I'd love to see Bryer be given the opportunity to rerecord or perform specific lines and moments and encourage development. Sadly some people online can be awful and the response has been quite awful towards Bryer.
That's it for now, I won't score the expansion /10 as I don't consider them complete until the last patch.
Fun video. Safe travels, Warrior of Light!

The biggest lie I hear in defence of Dantrail is that it's a fresh start and it must be boring because we're starting a new arc. It's not a new beginning, it's just like any other expansion where the old crew gets to go to a new place and learn about the local culture and so on.
But why do I have a problem finishing the story in this case?
Is it because Wuk Lamat is a fanatically optimistic character, full of love and understanding, and the whole story bends because of it, including the villains? or is it because they tried to copy Shadowbringer, but it all came to nothing because of the inability to write more realistic characters? I don't know, but I'm definitely waiting to see how they do it in the future.

I think when people say "it must be boring" for DT, they are saying it in the same way they say "ARR is bad". Is ARR bad? Not really - it's just a lot of world building. I think these people mean it is going to be "boring" when compared to Shadowbringers and EW. I assumed going into DT that it would be along the level of StB and ARR. I think there is a difference though in ARR or even StB quality and DT. DT was not necessarily "boring" to me as much as poorly written.

I agree but I wonder what happened? This is just my guess but I'm assuming the original writer was reassigned to FF16 and ishikawa got a reward for endwalker in the form of FF17 or that new project so Dawntrail was written like this between and probably by people who haven't had a summer break in a long time. Too bad Wuk Lamaat didn't come after Stormblood because we could have made peace with Garlemand and saved two expansion.

They selected the wrong head writer. They leaned too far into Wuk Lamat and basically silenced and sidelined the Scions.
All the Scions were uncharacteristically stifled and mere shades of who we came to love.
The story finding ways superficial for them to stay behind. Alphinaud forgets how to mentor and guide. Pretending the previous expansions didn’t happen was a large shit.
The tension speeds up to make up for the slow start. The most emotional part of the story in the lv 99 area hit their mark, but immediately get washed away by rushed and heartless ending. Erenville doesn’t even grieve.
The English VA for Wuk has talent and was given bad direction. Wuk was a one note character.

I don't agree with you at all that its ok for us to be in the background for whole msq, to not have any part for ourself. Also there were no new character that we learn about there was only Wuk Lamat. If Wuk Lamat story ended with the right of succession and becoming dawnservant the story would be much better, because we would get new character who was main hero but also we would have our story. I really hope they will come back to us being a main hero of a story, because this is why story was so great, imagine how shadowbringers would suck if the Ryne was the one who absorb the light of wardens and she was the one who bring back the night, imagine if we didint throw the adbert axe at Hades made of light, but Ryne did it.

100% did not fail. A notable amount of players joined AFTER 3.0. 2.1-2.3 were just awful, and 2.4-2.55 were basically HW story setup. So, I had very low expectations for this expansions launch story. It is interesting the way they took it. They have 2 years worth of story to setup the next arc which happily will not be 10 years long. People didn't listen to Yoshida when he said to have measured expectations. Spectacle creep ruins games. This dialing it back approach with DT means they can ramp up the story again from a starting point rather than continue with the foot on the gas and constantly have to one up themselves. I'd rate the 7.0 story as decent, but the 95-97 range was not great at all, and it was a chore to get through it; decent zone though. I'll reserve full judgement on DT once we're looking at the next expansions setup story.

    • @Nothv13

People don't have issue with the dialing back of spectacle or stakes. They have issues with the poor writing, poor character development. DT was advertised as an adventure and vacation while looking for the city of gold. When we find the city of gold, we immediately leave and our adventure is just following Wuk around like a puppy dog only to go into multi reflection stakes like from ShB (so much for vacation and lower stakes). Estinien seems to have had the adventure and vacation we were promised. We get told characters like Krile will get the spot light yet a major revelation is revealed to Krile off screen because we must be attached to Wuk by the hip. Wuk even barges on on Krile scenes near the end. Erenville doesn't even get to grieve. Speaking of that, even when we get away from Wuk and spend time with Erenville, it is still about Wuk because we got to find the bracelet and it becomes less about meeting Erenvilles family and more about finding Wuk old caretaker. Wuk is pretty much the perfect example of the Black Hole Sue trope.

Eh, all this can be summed up as people didn't like Wuk Lamat because she was voiced by a trans person. On top of that, Square gave Wuk Lamat the main character privilege so the whole story is not about the Warrior of Light, but her. It also doesn't help that Wuk Lamat is almost entirely useless because not only she can't fight and beat her competition but also she is dumb as hell and can only do things as instructed. Her whole character is "We can be friends and we don't need to hate each other". As a result of all of this, the first half of the story was lacking a lot, but the story became interesting in the second half with the Alexandria angle, which is more or less ruined by Wuk Lamat ironically enough.
The problem is that people have high expectations and they think EVERY single expansion must have Shadowbringers kind of story despite Yoshida and his team advertising D.T. as a fresh new story that does not depend on the beaten horse known as the ancients/Ascians. Another thing people despise is that the Scions had minor roles and this story could've been Krile's moment but she was completely eclipsed and forgotten in favor of Wuk Lamat despite the story having a LOT to do with Krile.
Other than the story. Dungeons, Music, Bosses, Mechanic, classes and pretty much everything else was a BIG improvement from what we had in EndWalker. As playability goes, D.T is a 10/10 easily or at least a 9/10. Story I would give it a 7. It was good, but as I mentioned before, the first half was rough.
