  • ffxiv's new dawntrail expansion might end up being a kind of disappointing expac for a lot of reasons. it has to follow in endwalker's footsteps and i'm not too happy with the decisions they've made so far regarding the story. obviously it'll still be fun to play and yes i AM going to play it, but i do need to be a little critical about the story and the direction they chose to go in.
    if you disagree, that's okay! this is all just my opinion on what i think is going to happen and i'm probably wrong anyway.
    and it's all going to be debunked in like 2 days anyway so... whatever.
    0:00 - Intro
    1:49 - the scions gotta go
    3:43 - endwalker was SUPPOSED to be the end
    5:42 - character bloat
    7:43 - scion civil war!!! whoa!!!
    9:07 - the stakes have never been......... lower?
    10:40 - leave the ascians alone already!!!!
    12:26 - villains and bad guys
    13:08 - THEORY BREAK
    15:33 - no more references i can't take it anymore
    i'm iska, and i'm an independent vtuber! i don't stream yet but maybe i will one day. for now i just make videos on things i like. i drew and rigged my own model and i edit everything myself too, so please be nice.
    despite this video i like final fantasy 14 for personal computer thanks bye
    sorry for any audio issues! kind of had to rush this one out for obvious reasons.

Instead of us feeding them, I t hink it should have been more that they are taken prisoner and we see them being conscribed as workers for Doman and Ala Mhigan restauration.

      but... most of the scions were much more in the background this expansion, it's very much the start of a new arc that relies little on previous stories, there were no characters from old expacs showing up to cause character bloat, the "civil war" did in fact turn out to be much more of a friendly competition without the scions working against each other. AND we didn't get any Ascian shenanigans
      it seems to me like most of the concerns brought up in this video were avoided pretty well?

    • @SageTigerStar

      @@cyberjunk8914 it is a little unfortunate that even though we had the scions there and they *did* technically take more of a back seat...we really didn't get a whole lot of time to bond with other characters in a meaningful way, mostly because anytime we'd talk to anyone else, Wuk Lamat would push her way into the conversation and wonder why the focus wasn't on her for the last 2 minutes.

    Good video. I agree with most of your points ...... except for the references section. I actually think the way they reference old games is actually ingenious because they either make the references tie into the ff14 universe or they give a good reason why the original universe is present in the ff14 universe.
    I didnt really play ff4 either but i thought the golbez arc was pretty cool because it essentially was an excuse to explore more of the 13th's present and past. It wasnt really about the ff4 reference so much as it was about seeing the interactions between the shards.

    • @virtual_iska
      @virtual_iska  Месяц назад +3

      thank you!
      yeah, i find that i do actually really like the references when they can tie it in! i enjoyed the ruby weapon series questline and what they did with that, and i do agree completely that we definitely needed to go to the 13th to tie up a lot of loose ends.
      i think that the golbez arc from around 6.4-5 ended up being really cool, but i think they really missed with the fiends and the build up to it, so i spent most of endwalker really checked out of the patch cycles since it just felt like they were throwing references at me.
      they CAN definitely do references well, but the times they've done it a little hamfisted makes me wary haha

    • @AmiHinaLee
      @AmiHinaLee Месяц назад +1

      This is my stance as well. All very agreeable points considering I went into this video thinking I would disagree with everything since im riding the DT hype train (since it'll be my first expansion I go into as its released).
      As someone who has played ff4, when I was told Endwalker's post was a love letter to it, it actually encouraged and motivated me to keep playing. Not to say the original plot didnt do the job, but it was a huge factor in my personal enjoyment of the game. After Endwalker was finally completed, post-ew was like my "reward" for getting as far as I did.
      The references definitely cater to my generation of nostalgia, cus boy howdy do I love pointing at things and going "OMG I REMEMBER THIS!" ahah, i can't beat those allegations, but I can also see how/why it wouldn't be someone elses cup of tea.

    The Endless was a subject that could have filled a whole expansion. It got surface level examination and was tossed to the side. They laugh, play, fall in love, produce culture and are capable of interacting with the outside world. For all intents and purpose they were alive, but the story treats them like they weren't. It encouraged us to commit (deleting a group of people) because their existence was inconvenient. Rather than finding an alternate solution to the real issue, that was their need to kill people to survive. If their issue was they didn't have access to tacos, there would be no moral issue to letting them continue until the heat death of the universe. I guess we don't need to try because they aren't real... Much easier to just turn them off forever...

    • @SamF1013
      @SamF1013 23 дня назад +3

      I understand your feelings however. For The Endless specifically, I felt that that was kind of the point. The point is to accept the inevitability of death, and that nothing lasts forever. To go against nature like that comes at a great cost. There shouldn't be a solution to their problem. Their entire society is built around a denial of death. Of course the solution isn't going to be "look, a sustainable way to deny death forever!!" It shouldn't be that way. You're supposed to mourn them, as you mourn people. You're meant to go into denial, bargain, hope for another way, a way to keep them around. But the reality is that.. you can't. And that you shouldn't cling to the dead in such ways. It's a very common theme in literature. Sometimes... there just isn't a solution.

      @@SamF1013 When is the time to die? This very much sounds like the tar pit. In the show "Dinosaurs" they had a tradition of throwing their elderly into tar pits because they had become a burden. But civilization had advanced enough that they were able to continue to sustain them and they stopped the tradition.
      I very much do not accept that a life has to end. Or that new life is more valuable than old life.

    • @SamF1013
      @SamF1013 23 дня назад +1

      @@koatam It's great to struggle with the concept of mortality. Many people do. You're ironically exemplifying the point of that chapter of the story. But death comes nonetheless.
      "The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples. The great globe itself. Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve. And, like this insubstantial pageant faded. Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little lives are rounded with a sleep." - Shakespeare, The Tempest (rough quote)
      The concept of The Endless is simply another tale in an anthology of stories encapsulating the concept of grief. Denial, Bargaining, Anger, Depression, Acceptance. The dead are gone, you cannot hold onto them forever. Even the memories will not last forever. Everyone. The most infamous people, buildings that are said to be eternal. Everything and everyone eventually fades into stardust.

    • @koatam
      @koatam 23 дня назад

      @@SamF1013 My disagreement with mortality is kind of beside the point. If I agreed that life should have an end, it's still wrong to have ended The Endless because they were still alive. The "right" thing to have done is to stop Sphene from gathering souls and let the system decay. Without the input of fresh souls they would have "died naturally."

    since the announcement of dawntrail i had one big question in my head: will they address the final days? i mean: WE know what happened, but on a totally new continent, where it was not explained, what happened? and it was the end of the world! right? right? RIGHT?? burning skies, monsters and all? the whole world was affected, right? right? ...? so in the new world, no one was affected by the last days? so it was only the end of half the world? a third? for me, its a very lazy connection between the addons and it takes away from endwalker. the end of the world was never the end of the world, if other continents never heard about it, and so the end of the world was never a big thing.

    It couldn't have turnt out any worse. It's made me want to turn from a story-exclusive enjoyer into a story skipping raider out of necessity of getting my money's worth from this expansion. We're kind of masquerading with corpses of 'complete' characters, with somehow less interesting husks of new characters. Wuk Lamat is purely poorly written - I actually feel like she was scarcely written at all. Man. It sucks. Bad. I am omitting my gripes with CBU3s apparent inability to innovate their MSQ gameplay because that would be a russian novel. In summary though: after heavily abridging ARR, they somehow failed to see why they were seen as unideal, and stuck with the same formula for a dubbed 'new chapter, a beginning to a 10 year plan'.

      @Stiksta Месяц назад +1

      I disagree. Stories that just pointlessly kill off their characters is actually pretty cringe. Like it's trying to be a rip off of game of thrones or something. Honestly even game of thrones or attack on titan kinda didn't do it properly. The "main cast" is just everyone who made it to the end. They had massive plot armor all along. There never was any stakes just the illusion of it.
      I see the scions like the main crew of any TV show or anime. It gives the story an actual narrative device to show character growth in a story where the main lead is mute. Killing them off or retiring them is just a waste.
      It's like having a long running TV show and then the og cast just gets replaced. Stargate SG1, Babylon 5, etc... Everytime this happens the show ends up feeling too different and gets canceled.
      I mean look at what happened with the villains. Now that emet and zenos are gone what's left? You take lex luthor or the joker and toss em in the garbage. Or even if it's a redeemed one we only redeem them just to toss them in the garbage again. It's like permanently killing off Vegeta in the frieza saga.
      Just boggles my mind seeing fans want to kill of characters then complain their fan favorites get killed off. Character deaths are really the most impactful at the end of a story, so they participate in it from start to finish. It's an ongoing mmo so...

    I disagree with most all these points but still watched all the way through. NUMBERED LIST TIME!
    1. I think the scions main problem is that they need breathing room to develop instead of just reacting to strife/conflict.
    2. Having existing buddys actually makes the players more invested, rather than feeling isolated with only new characters who need time to warm up to ya. I'm personally tired of brooding npcs who take a long time to be likeable rather than just having a group of friends.
    3. Character bloat hasn't stopped people from liking other characters. Feels like a very weak point when each expansion we have the scions but also other npcs who stick around for an expansion or two. I remember a jp 2019 popularity poll where the top characters are all dead ones.
    4. Scion civil war, feels weak, I agree. Going to be hard to sell this one, but there's a chance they can pull it off.
    5. I don't think there needs to be a universe ending plot, but the stakes have to be high. Start with making you invested in a new place, learning to love it and then threaten it. I think they're going to pour more in than usual to make you love this new world. In that case you need to start slow.
    6. I honestly think we're done with Ascians. This is a good point but not likely to come up.
    7. Honestly all the supposedly villains here seem really weak and this girl doesn't fit the bill for what will be a villain for this expansion. Please introduce someone not in the patch notes to fill this role SquareEnix.
    8. Nothing wrong with the shard theory, I don't think that's going to be the case though. It's more likely to be the hidden top of the map had some reactivated allagan civilization or underground bunker civilization or something. I think that's more likely here.
    9. References are the lifesblood of ff14, my hopes is that we get more references, not less. This is one of the big hopping on points for most people and probably the most unpopular point to go against it.
    Thanks for the vid and hopefully your concerns are addressed when the expansion drops. Only one way to know for sure, see ya in Dawntrail!

      Now that I think about it... outside of moral issues of killing denizens of shards... With final days over there's no reason for someone not to continue the work of ascians and unite the shards with the source again.
      At least to my understanding Venat shattered the source cause it was too dense in eather for it's denizens to use dynamis which turned out to be required to defeat the endsinger (LB is us using dynamis and tank LB3 is required for that fight [or at least was] even on normal)

    keep spitting facts. I was very pleased with 6.0 and my disappointment was immeasurable when we found out the scions disbanding was just a prank and we'd be following like 75% the same characters in the postpatch and expansion. There's only so much more you can do with them, they have to go be on their own to give the story breathing room.

    not having a world ending thing gives a chance for the scions just being side character, and giving development to your own story and others. because if it was a big world ender or threat then the scion would have to be there again to save the day again.

    My biggest, most prevalent concern is Wuhu Lmao's behaviour, and characterisation so far. She's showing traits of the Rings of Power Galadriel, unlikeable and grating. Admittedly, we have an entire new storyline for her to develop, but her personality doesn't seem to be anything beyond: "I'm gonna be the next Hokage!"

  • @DizzyTCG

    Not bad points, but I do disagree with your last section (references). EW patches were handled poorly IMO, and even in context it doesn't add a whole lot to the game. It was underdeveloped and honestly needed a lot more to it. I think they can do it well, even if they do rip certain things straight out. They just need enough for the characters to stand on their own even if they are references.
    The two Golbezes (Golbeese?) are effectively two different characters, only sharing some personality traits (and design of course). However, the early/mid patches just sorta waved him and the Archfiends around without giving proper development and introductions (aside from Barbariccia, who I think was the only one who they did "okay" at). It's not that they're references that's at fault, they're undercooked references. They'd still be underwhelming if they were different original characters.

    • @cyberjunk8914

      yeah, i completely agree, i think that the EW patches relied on FFIV a little too closely too truly stand on their own, hoping that fans of that game would enjoy the characters purely for the references. I think Zero is the only part of it that really works because she's original, but even her character development was a little underbaked.
      In my opinion, a lot of it also comes down to being a patch arc that has much less space to explore than a full expansion, making everything feel even more rushed.
      I think extensive callbacks like this can work well in FFXIV when they're more focused on telling an original story with distinct characters and not just namedropping and recreating events from old games for the sake of fanservice.

    as someone who actually cares about the ff games and has played them, the golbez after patch stories mattered way more to me than 6.0 patch questlines. i can understand it being jarring if you just dont play ff games (no mention of the nier/drakengard raid tho) so a lot of the references go over your head, but thats what a theme park mmo does when it has the name of a pre-existing successful franchise. its funny you also mentioned genshin which quite literally does the exact same thing, half of their roster is JUST honkai impact 3rd characters or references or allusions. i think what youre really asking for is for someone else to make game it feels, with 0 history, 0 other games, and 0 references to anything else (good luck). if you dont care about the Final Fantasy franchise, mayhaps dont play the game surrounded by Final Fantasy?? please play a different game if final fantasy in final fantasy bugs you that much
