Free Roaming New York (Mod) - Godzilla: Save The Earth (PS2)

- After many struggles, I am back with another free roam mod. This time, I am destroying New York City! Simon Strange once said that "GTA: Godzilla" free roaming was boring due to nothing posing any threat to you besides the enemy monsters, but as you'll see in the video, the city itself can be quite a threat if you don't play carefully.
On the technical side, this challenge is currently replacing the Bowling challenge. My intent is to replace as many challenges as I can with the various cities in the game for free roaming. Getting this to work was surprisingly challenging. The Bowling and Basketball stages don't have any night variations, but the ChallengeDemolition script that I'm using to create the free roam mode requires that they exist or the game will crash (this is because it randomly selects between day/night stages). Now, if this was the Xbox version of the game, I could simply make a copy of the night version of New York, rename it to "ChallengeBowling.zip", and I'd be done. But the PS2 version doesn't work like that. All of the game data is contained in one large archive called "GODZILLA.VOL". To add new files to this archive, I had to write a program capable of generating a new .VOL archive that could be read by the game. It was a bit difficult, but I managed to cobble something together that seems to work.
Going back to the actual gameplay, I was a bit surprised to find out that you literally can't die. Instead of dying, the challenge is simply counted as being completed (and you always fail because the point goal isn't functioning for some reason...). I was quite disappointed to see that the Statue of Liberty is not present in the PS2 version of the New York stage (similar to how Tokyo Tower is present in the Xbox version of the big Tokyo stage, but not in the PS2 version). The base which it stands upon is there, but not the actual statue. In general, free roaming the Xbox versions of these stages would be a lot more fun/interesting. The PS2 stages were clearly stripped of many objects that aren't within the boundaries due to either limitations or to boost performance. Unfortunately, I don't own a capture card, and none of the Xbox emulators are as good as PCSX2 yet, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Игры
Godzilla in New York, now with 100% less Matthew Broderick!
Dylan, you're a constant reminder of how fun it is to open up these game files and just mess around with modding for the sake of finding new content or just showing the world how it could've been, etc. So great and inspiration content.
Thank you!
Nice! This makes the map of New York seems so much bigger
Yeah, I was really surprised by how large the map felt! There's tons to destroy, and it's more fun to mess around in free roam than Tokyo due to abundance of tall buildings.
This looks gorgeous I swear this is the best Godzilla game to ever come out nice job. This mod makes the New York map look stunning.
It certainly is the best! I like most of the Godzilla games, but nothing really beats Save The Earth.
Also, I totally agree! New York looks really nice even for a PS2 game!
@@DylanRocket I 100 percent agree
This is my favorite godzilla game too. And the new york map,
I always loved how unrelistic the height of the buildings were.
@@GSTE_ The tall buildings on this stage are a lot of fun! It's kinda amusing to see them topple Godzilla, and it's a nice challenge to an otherwise challengeless mode.
I've always wondered what this map looked like. Great job man!
Thanks! It sure is cool to explore it without any other kaiju harassing me lol
12:10 King Kong will remember that
I always loved how unrealisticly tall these new york buildings were.
Good job
Thanks! The tall buildings on this stage are a lot of fun! It's kinda amusing to see them topple Godzilla, and it's a nice challenge to an otherwise fairly challengeless mode.
@@DylanRocket Have you ever played MechaGodzilla 2 and tried super jumping over the buildings in new york. I find that one of the coolest things in this game.
@@GSTE_ I never have, but I'll have to try it out now!
Damn lizard. He's destroying the city I use to roam around. LOL
Nice city destruction
Thanks!
Man I never realized how small Godzilla was compared to skyscrapers. Is he 50 meters here?
I think he's probably around that height in the game. I was a bit surprised by how small he looked too.
Awesome!
Thanks!
I still think it's funny that this game and DAMM have better building destruction than Godzilla PS4. Imagine, buildings that actually crumble, not flash and explode like bombs. Btw very cool, I wonder if free-roaming could be done in DAMM in a similar way. When I have my vacation from school I might try to get a hex editor and decipher code.
Yeah, I didn't like how everything explodes in the PS4 game. I do like that they can break apart into chunks, but they shouldn't all flash and explode. As for free roam in GDAMM, I don't think it's possible in the GameCube version. I've tried enabling single player destruction, and it only works if you set a fixed camera position, and even then, it's still very unstable. The Xbox version pretty much has a free roam mode already in the form of singleplayer destruction mode, but it might be nice if we could find a way to remove the barriers.
Would love to do a version of this with a modded godzilla to look like the 2021 godzilla. (same height scaling and everything).
Ok honestly scratch that: i just want a free-roaming city-destruction kaiju game.
It's times like this where I wish the buildings had less HP, thus easier to tear down.
Yeah, I also kind of wish the buildings wouldn't always fall on top of you. It's a bit lame to see Godzilla get toppled by almost every building he tears down in this stage lol (although it does present an interesting challenge of trying not to get yourself killed, I suppose).
@@DylanRocket Sort of like risk & reward.
I can see the appeal in that and gives breath weapons a special use.
*Hello there!*
Hello there, General CamoFlash7
@@DylanRocket *You are a bold one...*
You know, I wouldn’t mind if another Godzilla game was a more polished version of this mod
😱😱 so you can destroy the bridges. How about the bridges on san francisco? i would always throw building at it but it doesnt destroy but i would know because of the boundaries 😭
anychance we can get some mope zilla gameplay? :D
There's a lot more Godzilla videos coming! Unless you were specifically referring to the 1998 incarnation since he isn't in the game =P
@@DylanRocket i actually was refferencing 98 zilla XD
@@411Remnant Oh lol
Can you really lock onto battra? Also, is every building checked in-game for how many points you can get?
You can, but I don't think he reacts at all to getting hit by beams unlike Mothra in DAMM who'd leave the arena if you hit her. As for building point values... that's a good question. I'm not really sure how it works.
@@DylanRocket Hey what's with the alpha build of GDAMM? Looks totally different
6:40 the King of Monsters says "Sayonara" to Trump tower.
I think I downloaded the right Godzilla 1998 movie
The Godzilla we deserved in 1998
