I’m from the Westbank of GNO, but I love hearing about Grand Isle and everyone’s memories here. I only hear it through word of mouth or books. It seemed like it was a second home for a lot of generations of families. Thank you for interviewing the people of Grand Isle.
Great nephew’s last name is Besson, his dad still lives on the Island. Just saw Miss Leoda at a funeral in Thibodeau about 2 weeks ago. Her daughter is running the restaurant”Yums” on the island. I miss going there for a few months ever winter. The last hurricane Ida washed away more than just sand, it washed away a way of life.
Poor Grand Isle. Hurricane Ida showed no mercy. The videos out of here of the storm are insane. Wishing everyone there as well as the rest of LA a speedy recovery.
Wow unbelievable how beautiful this place is…hurricane ida completely destroyed it…i visit Nola a lot and this was next up…god bless you all and please be safe
i grew up on Grand Isle in the 60s and 70s. My daughter was conceived on Grand Isle in 1982. Great place. Dad was offshore in oil industry. Miss it so much.
As a child I remember the big ducks running after me after I’d feed them. I loved it there for a reason. my grandfather Willie Pastrano was related to Neź Coupé & came from Grande Isle in the whom to Tremé. Went on to win World Light Heavyweight Championship & train with Ali. Barthelemy, Verdon, Chighizola, Blazio
I have fond memories of Grand Isle. We vacationed there for a week at the beginning of summer and again for a week at the end of summer. We rented a large home with a surround screened porch from a man named Mr. Tiff.
Why is bluegrass music playing instead of Cajun music, or any music native to the region and culture? People need to give much more thought to these presentations.
I was blessed to spend almost 17 months working there on the shoreline protection project in 2007-08 One of those special special places in this country! Sending prayers to everyone!!
Direct descendant of Nez Coupé lol and I know Jean Lafitte’s last remaining descendants ironically. Verdon, Barthelemy, Blazio, and Chigizhola. My great grandmother moved to Tremé before my grandfather was born in 1935.
She my cousin and don’t even know it, I am a lost heir as a descendant of the Boutte family.
