When I was landscaping we had a trick for tight spots. In this situation we would turn the weedeater so that the bump head faced the fence, we would cut the string super short and tilt it so that we could get close to the fence without hitting it. The line would be shortened so that you could bring the tip of line to the edge of the post and move it towards you to trim the tops. I feel like a visual would be more useful for this but it's dark and raining and I'm not that dedicated. Hope this helps somebody.
This is also a legit trick but I would only do it on wood or metal fences to avoid chipping.

I used to work for a company cutting lawns and we had one neighborhood where it was HOA requirement that your yard be bordered by those snap together 3 foot tall vinyl fences with 30 inch gates. I know most aren’t THIS bad but our weed eaters would literally splinter entire posts at the slightest contact and most of the homeowners didn’t even care because they knew how trashy they were. We also kept a supply of the fence posts for the occasional complaint and they were so cheap it didn’t really matter.

Everyone saying he’s scratching the fence hasn’t weed whacked very many of these vinyl fences before. There is no way to accomplish what he did without hitting the fence some. String trimmers cut in circles so it can’t reach into the corner without some finesse. Plus even on a straight section you have to rub the fence a little bit to get a clean even cut. This is actually a great tip and something I discovered organically while working with my friend who owns his own lawn care business. Without doing this the corners just grow super tall and look ugly/unkept. The fact that weed eaters damage these fences over time is just one of the many flaws of these fences. You’re not just gonna not weed eat your fence to prevent damaging it.

    NOTICE
he did the easy side, the other side of the pole would not have been so easy since the wacker spins counter clockwise
turn your wacker vertically for both sides
and you can manage the wacker wooping that you give the fence

I usually pour a small trail of Gasoline next to the fence line and then light it on fire to kill off the grass. Works good, and the neighbors dog won't bark at me for weedwacking next to the fence

Use a spray so shut doesn’t grow directly under your fence….did lawn care for years and that’s exactly why we did it…so all the Milwaukee dads dont muck up a plastic vinyl fence..

Spray round up once a month along the fence line.

All that does is kill all the vegetation and then rain splashes the mud up on the fence and eventually erodes the dirt. Looks like shit after a year or so of doing that

The fence already had marks on it genius. And they are black. Clearly not from a string trimmer

My first gas weed whacker I'm not too crazy about. It's very aggressive and tend to catch or grab the chain link fence if I just barely touch it. I've always used corded electric ones but noticed my neighbors cordless electric weed whippers seem easy to use and do a nice job.
