Metal Detecting Gold Sovereign Coin: Garrett AT Gold.

Colleen strikes a decisive blow for female hobbyists with the Garrett AT Gold working in all metal mode and operating with a 'dig everything' policy as she unearths the 'dream find' - a 1910 Gold Half Sovereign in near 'new' condition. This coin was all the more unexpected as it came from a WW2 Australian Army camp site! Also featured is a 'live' dig of an Australian Army 'Rising Sun' slouch hat badge. i also found a gold sovereign 1903 mint condition also with my at pro . i was dead chufffffed its on display in my cabinet. when i first started detecting years ago my deam was to find a sovereign and i did . happy diggggggin

Its more then likely that this little half sovereign found by Mrs Q was got by one of the Australian solders in Cairo who served in the middle east along with British troops. He then returned to the army camp for further training and lost it, until Mrs Q found it again. The half sovereign was obtained by solders, and often won in card games. Many solders had them then, and kept them as lucky coins. I am sure an interesting story could be told on this one. Well done Mrs Q.

Ian - thanks for your great comment mate - this find is all the more amazing given that we have detected that site many, many times - both of us literally had passed within feet of that Sovereign - last year I dug a Florin probably 5 metres distant. Just goes to show - the old sites, no matter how heavily detected - still have treasures to be found - always go back! HH mate! Warren and Colleen.

Snakes are always on our mind and we come across them occasionally - and you can be sure most are very dangerous and some deadly! But a bit of common sense - and making a fair bit of noise - usually keeps them at bay. You have to be careful lifting old sheets of iron etc or there may be a surprise underneath! You will be relieved to know that it wasn't the Radio Tower/generator foundation site LOL - we went up there for a drive but lots of grass and didn't look too promising. Garrett took some pics last month and I know they will be used here in our detecting magazines - didn't realise I was being exported to the UK LOL. David - the explanation you provided for the origin of this coin - is entirely logical and, I believe, exactly what occurred here. We have found a number of Egyptian silver items on the site, clearly souvenirs of the Middle East. Thanks for that - all seems logical now that you suggested it LOL. HH mate! Warren and Colleen.

Thanks for your comment ED - that target ID falls right in the lead range so you have to dig all the '50-something' signals on the Garrett ATs. On that basis I have probably left a few hundred Sovereigns in the ground - "that's just lead" LOL. HH mate! Warren.
