Michael Flatley's Feet of Flames: The Impossible Tour -- Nightmare

The Dark Lord, Don Dorcha, along with his clan of Warriors, has successfully captured the #LordOfTheDance. His title belt stripped from him by Morrighan the Temptress, the Lord now faces torture -- and execution.
This is heavy stuff. The execution scene in "Nightmare" was a shock to audiences in 1996, who didn't know what to expect and only had Michael Flatley's first show to use as a reference point. Even today, if you ask audiences to list out their favorite numbers from the show, Nightmare is almost certainly not on that list.
But it's an important number. In Nightmare, there is a real sense of a story being told. Drama is sometimes described as the process of chasing your hero up a tree and throwing rocks at him; without danger, the audience cannot become emotionally invested. This is a story about good versus evil, and like all good "Hero's Journey" monomyth cycles, heroic figures must go into an underworld, die, and be reborn with greater power. It is no different than Aslan's sacrifice upon the Stone Table to the White Witch, or Gandalf the Grey falling to the Balrog and being reborn as Gandalf the White.
This version of Nightmare is particularly interesting because of the two leads involved. In classic Lord of the Dance, the Lord -- played by Michael Flatley -- was the older reigning champion fending off upstart younger usurpers. Here, we see an inversion of this: Matt Smith is a younger Lord, going through the hero's trials up against an older Dark Lord. This dynamic is much more in line with classic Hero's Journey storytelling, and in this version of Nightmare, thanks to Matt's acting, you really do get a good sense of just how outmatched and overwhelmed our hero is. Like Luke Skywalker versus the Emperor, only at the end does the hero get a true sense of what he's actually up against.
The greater the stakes -- the more terrifying the villain -- the greater the emotional payoff at the end. Fortunately, in the #FeetOfFlames Impossible Tour version of Nightmare, we have probably the most frightening Dark Lord who's ever set foot in Planet Ireland: Zoltan Papp. Commercial #IrishDance requires more than just dancing; it requires performing, and for lead dancers in Lord of the Dance, the acting requirements are the most demanding in the entire genre. We've already written extensively about Zoltan's truly masterful performance skills; here, they are on full display. This is evil's moment of triumph.

This is Nightmare.

I definitely prefer the original from LotD and Feet of Flames Nightmare. The music from this version distracts from the footwork, while the other versions enhance it. It was like the ticking of a clock combined with a heartbeat.
