I watched fan play Zeratul in around 2017, and I've been playing Zeratul ever since. Try hard fan is sick.

What does try hard really mean in terms of gameplay style and talent choice?
I think this is a good question. For Fan, it likely means winning efficiently without joking around. You know how he would often run around between enemy heroes and see how long he could stay stealthed and juke them before dying. Tryhard means "Play like you really want to win this", including double soaking and structure damage and going for the core when the opportunity presents itself, no sidetracking, no adapting to the bronziegoldies. For builds, it means not picking bad talents for funsies and extra challenge but just picking the build that's most likely to win for a given situation.
In non-Fan terms, tryharding essentially means the same, winning at all cost, including farming the weakest enemy player and exploiting the enemy team's inability to counter certain strategies. It can be used as an insult, meaning its own thing, by people who don't appreciate the mentality. Most notoriously in AI games which are hard to lose but where you will still find players aggressively yelling orders wanting to GO CORE as if their lives depended on it.
In a more abstract way, I consider tryhard the opposite of casual on a linear scale determining how much players want to win, sacrificing other distractions. Mind you, this is not about skill. I think tryhards and casuals don't mix. Casuals might just play to wind down, have some fun getting dings and play their favorite hero. They don't mind losing, they don't want to get better, they just want a chill atmosphere. Tryhards want to work towards winning and they expect the same from other players.
This is somewhat independent from ability and mental capacity. You can find tryhards who don't know the game but are still hell-bent on winning even if they don't know how. That's where the term goes astray and gives tryharding its negative connotation.
